Painting with acrylic paints on glass: a master class for beginning artists. Patterns on glass: how to make? We make patterns on glass with our own hands

For those who have decided to master painting with acrylic paints on glass, a master class for beginners will certainly be interesting and useful. Acrylic paints are used to create various crafts and decorate all kinds of surfaces - glass, wood, cardboard, etc. Acrylic fits well on almost any material, holds well, maintaining its brightness and original appearance for a long time. Acrylic varnish is usually used to fix the paint. There are special acrylic paints for glass surfaces. They should not be confused with stained glass, they are not the same thing. Acrylic surface paints are more reminiscent of gouache in consistency and in the process of work; the drawing turns out to be opaque. Stained glass paints are liquid and translucent.

Acrylic is well suited for painting glassware - plates, mugs, glasses. Paint must be applied to the outside so that the cookware can be safely used for its intended purpose. Glass jars, bottles, vases, and mirrors are also suitable for decorative creativity.

Basics of Craftsmanship

In this master class, we will consider ways to create a pattern on glass products, as well as the general rules of dot painting.

For beginners or children, it is better to use stencils for more accurate work. This will make the paint application process much easier.

You can make them yourself, by hand, or use ready-made ones, for example, these:

Perhaps the most difficult thing in working with stencils is to print the design, cut out the necessary holes (it is better to use a stationery knife) and fix the resulting workpiece on a degreased glass surface. Then everything is simple: you need to fill the stencil “voids” with acrylic paint using a brush or cotton swab. When the drawing is ready, you need to carefully peel off the workpiece and let the product dry until completely dry.

It is also recommended to use ready-made templates to create an artistic composition on glass. They can be downloaded or redrawn from the monitor.

In addition to the finished drawing, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • glass product;
  • acrylic paints;
  • brushes;
  • cotton pads;
  • alcohol or other degreasing liquid;
  • tape or tape;
  • acrylic varnish.

You can use contour paints, which are also used for stained glass painting, but you can do without them. Typically, individual details are drawn with a colored outline or used as a finishing touch to the finished painting.

Work progress:

  1. Soak a cotton pad in alcohol and wipe the glass surface to degrease it;

  1. Secure the template pattern on the “wrong” side using tape or tape;

  1. Start coloring the drawing: first, large details or background are painted over, then small elements are drawn (eyes, contours, shadows, patterns, etc.);

  1. Leave the finished drawing to dry;
  1. Cover the acrylic painting with a special protective varnish.

If you plan to create an original work, then first you need to make paper sketches of the future drawing. More experienced craftsmen and artists can paint directly on glass, guided by their imagination. But if you are not yet confident in drawing, then it is enough to draw large details on paper, identify the main elements, and create an overall composition. Then the drawing is also attached to the back side of the glass product and along the contours is filled with paints already on the glass.

The dot technique is quite simple to perform, but it requires some time and perseverance, as well as experience and artistic taste. The crafts turn out to be very original and elegant.

To work you will need the following:

  • glass surface;
  • tubes with contour paint;
  • degreasing liquid;
  • contour drawing;
  • scotch;
  • needle for cleaning tubes.

The dots should create a single pattern, but not merge into one line, so they are applied the same size at an equal distance. For a better understanding of what this painting is, it is recommended that before the master class you look at photos of the finished works, and also practice on paper.

Working principle:

  1. Degrease the glass surface and attach the design;

  1. Start applying paint pointwise along the large contours of the design, periodically cleaning the tube spout;

  1. Make small dots on smaller lines;

  1. Leave the work for about a day until completely dry;

Creative people are always looking for something new, interesting and entertaining. Nowadays there is a huge selection of ideas and materials for any type of hobby.

How are stained glass paints classified?

The photo shows stained glass paint for glass

In fact, stained glass paints for glass are very diverse, not only in color, but also in composition, consistency and texture.

There are three main groups:

  • Water based paints. Most often acrylic, they are distinguished by their lack of odor, liquid consistency, transparency and environmental friendliness. If necessary, they can be easily washed off with water until they dry out. These paints are used for creativity with children. Using such paints on glass, stained glass becomes transparent and is well suited for windows.

All water-based paints are subject to “firing” after drying. The completely dried product is “baked” in the oven for a certain time and at the required temperature. Instructions for the “firing” time and temperature are indicated on the packaging.

  • Organic solvent paints. These are paints with a thick consistency and a strong, pungent odor. They are usually made on a varnish base, so there is no need to “fire” the finished product. They dry for several days and after that, they can be easily washed. For frequent washing and cleaning, it is better to coat the top with a strengthening varnish.

If it is necessary to dilute such paints, you need to use only a solvent from the same company as them. Other thinners will ruin the paints, so the thinner is sold along with the paints.

  • Acrylic stained glass paints. They are used most often, they are odorless, dry quickly and produce bright, rich colors. Such paints easily mix with each other, giving new shades. If a more delicate shade is needed, the paint is diluted using a special thinner used for artistic paints.

Acrylic paints do not require “firing”, but for better wear resistance, you can additionally coat the product with acrylic varnish. These paints are not afraid of moisture and washing, they do not fade from sunlight and are not afraid of temperature changes. When painting stained glass on glass with your own hands, acrylic paints are the best choice for beginners.

Important! Any paints should not be used on dishes that come into contact with food. For example, when painting a mug, the design is applied from the outside.

Variety of stained glass colors

Novice creators use ordinary stained glass paints for painting on glass, without any effects or decorative inserts. But stained glass painting professionals use a greater variety of colors and decorative ideas.

Let's consider the most popular:

  • Sticky. These are paints, most often acrylic, that when dry form a thin film that can be removed from the base and glued to any surface.
  • Silicate paints. These are the most common paints, intended for “firing” and after that they become either transparent or matte.
  • Chandelier paints. When applied, such paints have a metallic sheen, depending on the metal included in its composition.
  • Volumetric or foaming paints. When “firing”, such paint peels off a little from the surface and a corrugated and three-dimensional pattern is obtained.
  • Icy or granular paints. When “baked”, the granules applied to the surface with a special glue spread and a “bumpy” picture is obtained.
  • Pearlescent transparent paints. They are usually applied over the base color to give a pearlescent color.
  • Paints with additives. It can be either decorative sparkles, in the form of hearts, stars or flowers, or a fluorescent or neon effect.
  • Matting paints. They have a delicate range of colors and create a translucent matte pattern on the glass. This paint is applied with a sponge or roller depending on the size of the surface to be painted.
  • Crystal colors. This is usually a milky paint; when it dries, it becomes completely transparent, while reflecting and refracting light into many colored shades.
  • Marble paints. These are most often two colors that are mixed and create the effect of a marble surface of the product.
  • Craquelure paints. They usually come in a set with craquelure varnish and, when dry, create the effect of a product cracked over time.
  • Contour or relief paints. Used to highlight the outline of a picture or pattern. Sometimes they create spectacular dotted images.
  • Paint that creates pearls. The required amount of paint is squeezed out of the tube, depending on what kind of pearl is needed. After a few seconds the paint will round out.
  • Liquid enamel paints. They are used on water, a drop of water is applied to the surface, and the necessary colors of paint are dripped onto it, which create intricate patterns.
  • Structural paints. They are usually sold in the form of a paste, when applied, we get an imitation of the surface in the form of leather or stone.

Advice! When creating stained glass for the first time, it is better to use simple stained glass paints.

Types and styles of painting with stained glass paints

Stained glass painting made using the double stroke technique

There are also many types and techniques for painting stained glass and each time new ones are invented again and again, but old techniques and painting styles do not go out of fashion:

  • Dot painting is one of the old painting techniques. Using stained glass paints, we draw a picture or pattern on the glass with dots that do not touch each other.
  • The streaking technique is used to create “marble” designs. To do this, mix different colors from the same manufacturer and add a colorless color to them, applying them with strokes.
  • The double stroke technique is used to obtain a two-color pattern. We put a dark color of paint on the brush from one edge, a light one from the other, make a stroke by pressing and turning the brush.
  • The ombre technique is done using a sponge, brushes are not used. The result is an interesting effect reminiscent of Victorian plaster.
  • Tiffany. The outline of the drawing is drawn with a felt-tip pen, then the paints are poured in, gradually and carefully so that they do not go beyond the outline and do not mix. On top, after drying, the design is varnished. With this technique, a three-dimensional drawing is created.
  • Gzhel. This painting technique is done using only two colors: white and blue. The patterns are drawn with a very thin brush, all lines should be smooth and clear.
  • Khokhloma. On a yellow background, patterns are painted with black, red and green paint. Khokhloma-style patterns are most often applied to a wooden surface, but there are also those who like to experiment.
  • Petrikovskaya painting looks very impressive. Flowers or birds are created with bright colors on a gold or black background. An example of such a painting can be seen in the photo above.
  • Gorodets painting involves drawings with the theme of village life. This is a village log house or peasants in the field. There may be berries and household items. The design is outlined with a white or black border.
  • Avant-garde is the simplest patterns such as stripes, squares or circles. It is not necessary to use geometric shapes; these can be random lines or even shapeless blots.
  • Inscriptions. Well, there are a lot of options. We can sign a personalized gift or kitchen jars, indicating in which one what will be stored.

Painting on glass with stained glass paints is a real art and if you start small, with simple drawings, you will want to improve and learn something new. In the video in this article you can watch the process of how to paint with stained glass paints on glass.

Dear friends, subscribers and blog visitors!

In my creative activity I use almost all known techniques painting on glass with stained glass paints. Don’t be surprised, it’s not difficult, because there are not so many of these techniques: contour, non-contour and multi-layer.

Sometimes dot painting on glass is also used.- this is perhaps the only basic technique that can be combined both with stained glass painting and separately as a technique point-to-point on other surfaces

The most amazing moments in the life of an artist are the moments of creating works... on glass, canvas or wood

Let's take a closer look at these techniques today. and let’s figure out what the specifics of each of them are and what opportunities they open up for artists. You will see that due to the effects obtained when using each technique, you can create completely different stained glass paintings with the same paints.

Let's start with the most common...

Contour painting technique

Its essence lies in the fact that first a contour painting is done on the glass., a sketch of the work is created, and then the spaces between the contours are filled with paints, as a result of which a painting is born.

The drawing is outlined with a relief outline, preferably from the same company that makes stained glass paints. If the surface is large enough, stained glass lead tape is used, which plays the same role as the outline - it does not allow the stained glass paint to mix and strictly adhere to a certain place.

Examples of masters in stained glass painting using contour

This is a matter of your taste... If you want to make the divisions in the drawing wider and similar to those in a real stained glass window, then choose stained glass lead tape. If you want your work to be airy and light, choose a contour in a tube.

The height of the outline depends on how much you plan to pour paint onto glass. But the denser the paint, the less transparent it is.

Advice: Stained glass paints are an amazing material; you can use it to create colorful works, and not only on glass. Practice on small pieces of glass with different densities of paint on the glass using different height outlines…. Perhaps you will discover something new for yourself!

In principle, all life is built on experiments. Experiment and live life to the fullest. And as Aristotle correctly noted: “Living means doing things, not acquiring them!”

You can get your hands on stained glass painting on small glasses, plates and vases

Advantages of this technique: the opportunity to see a sketch of the painting before filling it with colors, a certain schematic nature that allows you to break the process into separate stages, a characteristic “stained glass” appearance of the final work.

In general, this is a technique for curious people. It is best to use varnish stained glass paints to create beautiful paintings using the non-contour technique; they open up more opportunities in the world of stained glass painting.

By the way, these two techniques can be combined. For example, inside a large element in an outline you can make a pattern in a non-outline manner. And of course, flowers turn out especially beautiful when the spreading of stained glass paints creates amazing patterns inside the flower!

In a master class on painting a glass table, I show all the nuances of such work. The photo below clearly shows how beautiful spreading is created in this way.

You can purchase on a special page with a significant discount. Also in this lesson I additionally show the technique of gilding with gold leaf, since gilding complements this work.

As is known, hand made a special type of creativity and it is popular all over the world. A huge number of people They love to decorate the interior with their own hands.

Multilayer technique

The essence of this drawing technique is clear from its name: The paints are applied in several layers. Moreover, depending on what effect the artist wants to achieve, the bottom layer (or several layers) can be either completely dry or of varying degrees of dampness, so that they are mixed with the layer applied above.

This technique allows you to create the most realistic images using stained glass paints, with its help you can even convey shadows and play of light. This technique requires a lot of attention and patience.

Water-based stained glass paints are best suited for this technique. Although, if you practice enough, you can achieve good results with stained glass varnish paints.

A small (varnish) will help you make the right choice when purchasing.

Here, look at the example of the works of one master of stained glass painting, where you can clearly see the transitions of light and shadow on the boy’s face and on the bodies of the angels.

Examples of stained glass multilayer technique

Consistency in work and accuracy are important here... If errors appear, it will be difficult to correct them. And I repeat again - try, experiment! After all, nothing is impossible - anyone can master such a subtle technique... the main thing here is desire!

Spot painting on glass

Again, the name of this technique also speaks for itself. The image is formed by a set of dots made by contours, and its color and saturation can be varied not only by color, but also by the density of the dots, and the shades change, including when dots of different colors are placed next to each other.

The labor intensity of painting in these techniques is approximately equal. This methodical technique is not only used on glass and ceramics. Using this technique, they decorate everything and on any surface... from covers to clothes.

Spot painting on glass and ceramics is very popular in the world and is in great demand

Do you like paintings made with stained glass paints? If you want to try to write something surprising and unusual, but don’t know how to approach this technique, don’t worry. We all started somewhere.

Painting on glass “Girl playing with a cat on the windowsill”

At one time, I wrote down in which I showed and told in detail, clearly and step by step how to create a stained glass picture, even if you are doing it for the first time.

Moreover, the master class is based on working with professional solvent paints, and after it you will know exactly how to write real works. In the lesson I used the basic contour technique, but there are moments in the picture in which non-contour and dot techniques are present.

And as the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras said:“Give every day a chance to become the most beautiful day of your life!”

So if you are interested, go ahead and watch - the master class was recorded especially for you!

Also, if you already paint glass products, you can try your hand at a new technique - stained glass paints on an acrylic background on canvas. Free video lesson This is a new direction in mixed media that is winning the love of many people.

Ask your questions below in the comments, I usually answer all questions quickly

A beautiful work of art can be created from any glass object by applying the glass painting technique, which is accessible to everyone, to the theme.

Round brushes are used for painting glass. These can be squirrel, kolinsky or synthetic brushes. It is convenient to have brushes in 2 sizes. 2 or 1 number.

Paints:
These can be either stained glass paints (intended specifically for glass painting) or acrylic paints.
Glass paints can be transparent or opaque. Alcohol or water based. The advantage of alcohol-based paints, for example, from Hobbe Lane, Germany, is their water resistance and lack of a strong odor. The paints can withstand washing in hot water and detergents. But it is not recommended to wash them in the dishwasher.

Water-based paints, for example, Marabu (DecorGlass), which after baking at a given temperature (usually 130 or 160 degrees), also become waterproof. The temperature and mode specified on the paint packaging must be strictly maintained, otherwise the paint may change its color or even simply burn. The advantage of the paint is that it is a free solvent - water and the absence of any odor.

Outlines: for firing “Porzellan liner” from “Hobby line”, Germany. Firing in the oven at 160 degrees for 90 minutes. After firing, it is impossible to remove the contour. Pebeo contours, for example, become translucent when dry and give a voluminous line, but the complete drying time is three days.

Additionally, various rhinestones, beads, beads, small amber chips, colored sand, sparkles are used - all this is glued to the surface of the object and creates a magnificent decorative effect.

What can you write down?

regular photo frames. By painting the glass and inserting it into a frame, you will get a picture in stained glass style. Creating a real stained glass window is a very labor-intensive process, and with the help of glass paints you will create something in a few hours that will not leave anyone indifferent;

Glass utensils: glasses, glasses and goblets, decanters, various-sized salad bowls and bowls, plates, vases themselves, lanterns for tea lights, empty wine bottles and jars of interesting shapes, lampshades. They can be completely painted in stained glass style or limited to ornaments, initials, and patterns.

Glass inserts in furniture, doors and walls;

Mirrors. An image in the form of a frame or just a drawing in a corner will enliven an unremarkable mirror.

From glasses, flasks, bowls you can make candlesticks, pencil holders, vases and other functional items. Paint the plates to match the tone of your interior, and on special stands they will decorate the kitchen or living room. Be sure to keep in mind that surfaces painted with paint should not come into contact with food, so if you decide to make a pattern on utensils used for their intended purpose, do it from the outside. Additionally, various rhinestones, beads, beads, small amber chips, colored sand, sparkles are used - all this is glued to the surface of the object and creates a magnificent decorative effect.

The painting algorithm is as follows:

1. The surface of the glass is degreased with an alcohol-containing liquid, soap or other detergent. We do not touch the cleaned surface with our hands, because... any fat creates a layer from which the paint will peel off very quickly.

2. The selected pattern is printed on a printer in the required size. To transfer the design to the product, carbon paper is used: we place the carbon paper, the sketch on top, and the entire structure is secured with masking tape to avoid shifts. As an option, use a ready-made stencil from the kit. Or the sketch is applied to the back of the glass and the image is transferred with a felt-tip pen. For some items, all of the above methods are not applicable (for example, when painting bottles); you will have to draw it yourself, checking the original.

3. Next, use contour paste (your choice: gold, silver, transparent or classic black) to outline the drawing, making sure that the lines are closed. After the contour has completely dried (from 30 minutes to 3 hours), fill the drawing with paint, starting with large parts.

4. In order not to miscalculate the color of the composition, we recommend that you first create a color sketch on paper. Usually the color scheme is done in the colors of the interior. To prevent spreading, the side of the object to be painted is positioned strictly horizontally until the paint dries. During the work, the transparency of the pattern is checked, because the ability to transmit light is the main value of stained glass, which allows you to create colorful highlights. It is convenient to mix and dilute paints on a glass palette, placing a white sheet of paper under it (to more accurately determine the color).

5. Blemishes are removed with a cotton swab soaked in solvent. Air bubbles formed in the picture are immediately removed with a toothpick or the tip of a cloth - otherwise there will be a “hole” after drying. At the end of work, brushes are cleaned with solvent and wiped dry with a napkin.

6. For durability, the design is coated with acrylic glass varnish. This is done in about a day (check the instructions), when the drawing is completely dry. The finished product can be safely washed in warm water with detergents.

I asked myself this question when ordering glass painting. Of course, I painted with acrylic paints on bottles, glasses and various glassware, but I didn’t particularly test the durability, since the dishes were decorative in nature. And yet I was interested in the resistance of paints for painting on glass and ceramics to abrasion, their durability, strength, composition and hiding power.

The choice of paints for glass painting is very large; the Internet and regular stores offer a varied list of paints from different manufacturers.

But in order to get advice from the seller, you need to decide on your goals:

  • why do you need to use glass paints? for decoration, for professional painting, for a master class, for decorating with children);

Why is it important to know this? Stores provide both expensive and professional paints and small budget sets. You can purchase a set of 5-6 colors, 10-20 ml each. Or select colors individually in 20-80 ml bottles for a specific design.

  • what effect is needed ( transparency, glossy finish, matte finish);

There are stained glass paints - transparent, light passes through them, and opaque (opaque) paints, which can shine after drying or have a matte surface.

  • what object to paint ( dishes, windows, bottles, decorations).

There are paints that should not be applied to items that come into contact with food, and many paints are not resistant to detergents.

I used paints from several different manufacturers that did not require firing and I will say that all of them are not stable at all, they can easily be removed from the surface with a detergent and a rag, this applies to inexpensive paints for glass and ceramics, while more expensive ones are better to stick to, but they can be scraped off with a knife without much effort. For decorative purposes this is normal, but if you are going to decorate the dishes, you will still have to burn them in the oven to fix the paint. No amount of paint or varnish will change this situation, it’s been tested. Although I didn’t check all the paints, but the most available ones in our stores.

And one more feature that divides the paints into those that are used for cold application, which do not require firing in an oven or kiln, and for paints that necessarily needs to be secured high temperature.

And glass paints can be classified according to their properties: for paints water based and paints organic based(solvent based). Water-based brushes and the paints themselves can be easily washed off with water; organic-based paints can be washed off with white spirit or solvent.

Decola paints“Nevskaya Palitra” St. Petersburg, (5,6,9,12 colors, 20 ml each) water-based, completely not resistant to abrasion. Does not require firing.

Organic glass paint "Gamma" Moscow, more stable, but very liquid, dull colors. Does not require firing.

Acrylic paint Olki(Russia, St. Petersburg) for glass and ceramics, semi-matte, water-based. They are no different from ordinary acrylic paint. Does not require firing. But there are paints from the same company for stained glass. I haven’t checked the stability; I haven’t seen anything like it on sale here.

Stained glass paints "IDEA vetro" Maimeri company, Italy on an organic basis. Does not require firing. They are easy to wash and cannot be used for painting dishes for food purposes.

More professional acrylic paints Kreul Hobby Line water-based, Germany. Requires firing at 160*C – 90 minutes. Bright colors, durable. This company also has other kits, both water-based and solvent-based. The best choice for professionals and lovers of glass and ceramic painting.

Here, for example, is another set from Kreul Hobby Line.

I wish you creative achievements and the implementation of all your wildest ideas!
