As a basis for the drawing, you can take a suitable diagram of shelves for a bathhouse. In the process of its adaptation, it is recommended to adhere to the following recommendations:

• the optimal width of the beds varies from 350 to 800 mm;

• the distance between the slats necessary to remove moisture is 50 mm.

The length depends on the dimensions of the steam room. It is important that visitors are able to move freely around the room without being dangerously close to the heater. To do this, it is recommended to make a small wooden enclosing structure.

The unspoken rule is that the distance between the shelf and the heater should not be less than 500 mm. It all depends on the power of the furnace, the maximum temperature regime in the steam room.

Shelf assembly procedure

The first step is to prepare the wood for manufacturing. To do this, measurements of the steam room are taken and, based on these data and the recommendations described above, drawings of the shelves are drawn up. Then they begin to manufacture the frame.

The frame is formed from bars 50*70 mm, horizontal supports - 50*50 mm. The blanks are first dried (humidity up to 10%), polished and treated with special impregnations for the bath. For flooring, use boards with rounded edges (to avoid injury) with a width of 70 mm.

2. Installation of vertical racks. They are installed into the subfloor using metal corners, which will then be covered with boardwalk.
3. Installation of horizontal supports. The mounting grooves are pre-cut.
4. Attaching the main deck. The distance between the boards should be at least 1 cm.

It is recommended to use wooden nails or pins during the manufacturing process. If this is not possible, self-tapping screws with a protective coating should be used. A hole is pre-drilled so that the head of the screw is below the level of the board. After checking the reliability of fastening, it is closed with a wooden decorative plug.

You can start using the bath after finishing interior decoration and installations. But standing or even using a portable bench you won’t get much steam. You can lie down, relax and feel in full all the beauty of the heat and the broom only on the shelf.

It is a large wide shelf located along the walls in one, two or three tiers. In principle, there is nothing overly complicated in its creation. Having a minimum of tools, a little free time and desire, you can complete all the work from sketch to assembly of the shelf in a couple of days.

What materials can be used?

The main criterion for the applicability of materials in a bathhouse is their environmental safety. No toxic or strong-smelling substances should be released into the room air.

The use of chipboard or plywood is unacceptable. In their production, adhesive compositions based on phenol-formaldehyde resins are used, which, when heated, will certainly enter the steam room air.

The only option left is wood. Most often, pine or spruce are used as the most accessible species. Deciduous wood is more preferable in this regard.

When choosing pine or spruce boards for a shelf, you must avoid large live knots and resin pockets. When heated, the resin will protrude to the surface and become dirty.

As an option, a combined design can be performed. Pine bars are used to make the supporting frame. Horizontal and vertical surfaces are covered with aspen or birch.

Work planning, sketching

Designs and locations can be very diverse. Everything is determined by the dimensions of the room and its layout.

If the area and height of the room allow, then three-tier shelves are made along one or two walls. The top tier is usually the widest (about 90 cm). It is located at a height of about 120, maximum 150 cm. The second tier is somewhat narrower - about 60 cm. And is located at a level of 60-80 cm from the floor. Sometimes another one is added - a lower level, which is actually a wide step 20-30 cm high.

IN small room It is possible to arrange beds according to the compartment principle (one above the other). Well, a completely minimalist option - a single-tier shelf resting on the walls, is made in conditions of scarcity of both space and height.

To ensure that the surface of the bed does not sag, the ratio of its thickness and the distance between the supports must be observed. The most common inch board (25 mm thick) requires additional support every 40-50 cm.

So, for example, for a shelf 2 m long you will need to install 5 vertical supports. Each support consists of three vertical bars (two 120 cm long and one 80 cm). The rigidity of the structure is ensured by attaching horizontal slats on both sides of the vertical bars. At the same time, they form platforms for attaching the planks of the couch. The length of the horizontal slats of the upper tier is 90 cm. The lower tier is formed from longer elements of 150 cm, by connecting all three vertical supports.

Ventilation of the undershelf space is ensured by installing boards with small slots. The size of the gaps ranges from 1 to 2 cm.

Preparation of material

When selecting material for work, it is necessary to reject boards that have obvious defects:
mechanical damage(cracks, chips);
serious wood defects (large falling knots);
traces of the life activity of wood-boring beetles;
areas affected by fungus and rot.

In accordance with the developed sketch, it is cut to size from sorted material required quantity details. Next, all boards that have been rejected are cleaned of bark residues (if any) and sanded. Processing is done with sandpaper manually or using sanders.

The design is assembled in several stages:
assembly of vertical supports;
installation of supports;
installation of planks of the bed.

Horizontal slats are attached to vertical bars on both sides. This increases the strength of the connection and allows you to do without the use of fastening metal corners. The slats of the upper tier are attached with an overlap to the ends of the bars.

The upper tier is formed by fastening vertical bars at a height of 120 cm. The lower level is formed by a long (150 cm) horizontal strip connecting all three vertical bars at a height of 80 cm.

Next, the assembled supports are marked and secured. The outermost long vertical block is screwed to the wall with self-tapping screws. The lower ends of all the bars are attached to the floor. To ensure strength, you can use mounting angles. Another option involves fastening it to the floor by screwing self-tapping screws into the support bars at an angle.

Installation of the shelf boards completes the assembly process. They connect the entire structure into a single whole and ensure its strength and spatial rigidity. If desired, the vertical wall between the tiers is also covered with boards. The area between the lower tier and the floor should always be left open to allow cleaning.

Security requirements

To ensure that bath procedures are not overshadowed by anything, the design of the shelf must be reliable and safe:
if the stove bench is located next to the heater, then it is necessary to provide protective screens, preventing accidental contact with hot surfaces;
the ribs and end faces of the boards of the bench must be rounded and polished to a smooth state;
It is advisable to fasten the boards with self-tapping screws from the bottom up through horizontal slats supporting frame;
when fastening through the front plane, the fastener is recessed into the wood by 5-10 mm.

The simplest shelf It is a high lounger with a step for ease of climbing onto it. Great solution for lovers of Russian baths, who are frequented by professional steamers.

But the prevalence saunas in Russia led to the fact that they began to make shelves in the bathhouse and steam room multi-tiered, under the ceiling and sew up the vertical parts of the “steps” tightly. All this is correct and appropriate, but only for a Finnish bath.

How to make shelves in a steam room yourself and correctly

Well, we’ve come to the instructions. We present to your attention three options how to make shelves in a bathhouse in a steam room with your own hands - corner, folding and removable.

So, corner shelves to the bathhouse with your own hands. This means that you will stretch it along two adjacent walls. Exactly what length is up to you to decide based on the dimensions of the steam room. As you understand, we cannot adapt to your specifics, so we will give one example of how to make shelves in a bathhouse, and you will act by analogy.

The first thing you need to do is build drawing. To do this, we measure the room and determine the size and number of tiers of the future shelf.

In our case, the shelves corner, three-tier, with dimensions 280 by 220 cm. It has three tiers on the short side and two on the longer side. The first two tiers are the L-shaped structure itself, a solid one that has to be made. Fans of Russian baths don’t have to worry about the third tier - it’s only needed in the sauna.

The figure shows a plan with a top view and with drawings of supports on one and the other side of the L-shaped structure. Your task is to make a drawing yourself to fit the dimensions of your steam room. Focus on the following:

ATTENTION! Mortise-tenon joints provide rigidity. It is enough to make a cut in the beam 20 mm deep to make the connection much stronger. Afterwards the tenon and groove are additionally attached to self-tapping screws.

Please note that the design is being made autonomous from the wall. When installing in a steam room, you do not need to attach the shelf in the bath to the wall, they will stand independently, only pointwise fastened to the wall with corners with a gap of 1 cm.

The first stage after drawing the drawing is calculating the amount of material. Proceed from the fact that There will be 5 large supports, 4 small ones. Or proceed from the ratio of one support per half meter.

IMPORTANT! It is better to cut lumber as follows: first, the most long details, then those that are shorter. And, on the contrary, take first from the shortest available pieces. When the parts are ready, grooves are made in them. For this it is worth making pattern and go over it with a router in the right places. Ideally, the inserted part should fit fairly easily, but should fit tightly so that the connection can be lifted by hand without it falling apart.

ADVICE! Distinguish between parts where defects are acceptable and where they are unacceptable. It is clear that the first refers to parts invisible from the outside, and the second to seats, flooring, and cladding.

It is better to take galvanized ones that do not rust

The bars inserted into the groove are fastened from the outside with self-tapping screws - directly along the connection. Fastening the remaining parts of the shelves in the bathhouse is done end-to-end and also on self-tapping screws. However, someone may prefer corners.

The finished support should be sanded, after which it is coated everywhere impregnation for saunas (you can read more about impregnations suitable for steam rooms). It is advisable to do this: soak it, dry it, lightly sand it, soak it again.

Please note that for now we are just assembling the supports, each one separately. We have not yet gotten to the point of assembling the shelves, because we will be doing this directly in the bathhouse. In the meantime, work can be carried out in a workshop outside.

The next stage is assembling a frame without flooring. You will need a plumb line and a level to ensure everything is level. In this case, the supports are assembled onto connecting crossbars, which will later become a support for the flooring.

Difficult moment - jib, which are needed for future flooring at the junction of two shelves at an angle of 90 degrees. Through this jib from below, you should later attach the boards, edged at 45 degrees, to the shelves in the bathhouse.

You can begin to sheathe the finished frame with boards, but first you should install it in the bathhouse and install the corners between the wall and the structure. Only then can you start flooring equipment.

The first step is to mount visors- these are boards that will be under the knee of the person sitting on the shelf. The canopy is made from an ordinary linden board for a shelf, rounded on both sides, which is cut on one side to a flat surface. Then a 40 mm long block is glued from below to such a board, also straight on one side and rounded on the other. See picture below.

In the same picture you can see the chamfer removed after the visor has dried. It should be removed so that there is nothing digging under the knees.

Next, you screw all the other flooring boards with self-tapping screws from below, not forgetting gaps, which are better displayed using inserts required thickness. All flooring boards are also prepared in advance - sawed, sanded, impregnated with the same composition for baths or saunas - as described above.

Since in this design each tier forms a kind of niche, you can safely sew up the gaps between tiers- this is done with clapboard or shelf board.

IMPORTANT! Don’t forget about the gaps, and leave them wider in the vertical panels so that air can pass through more easily, so that there are no “pockets” where the steam does not get in, and therefore they do not warm up.

Folding

The only thing difference folding shelf from the design described above is that you You will not screw the flooring with self-tapping screws to the transverse bars of the frame.

Instead, the folding shelf deck will be assembled as a free-standing structure - the boards are attached to transverse bars that are not connected to the frame. Since this creates protrusions, the easiest way is to make them in the frame grooves, which, moreover, will increase the rigidity of the structure and prevent its displacement.

ADVICE! For a bathhouse, it is better to take stainless steel parts - both hinges and screws.

Below we show a diagram of how to attach the hinges to the timber and flooring. With this installation method, you have no chance of getting burned on the heated hinges, unless, of course, you stick your hands in :)
