Carpet is soft roll material with long or short pile, intended for flooring. The advantages include the following qualities: warm, you can walk on it without shoes, it’s easy to choose an option for any interior, you need a minimum of consumables. But there are also disadvantages: not suitable for large areas; not recommended for high-traffic areas. Its best use is in children's rooms and bedrooms. Carpet laying technologies are quite varied and are selected taking into account the characteristics of the room and its area, including preparing the base for the carpet and several methods for performing work related to the specific use of the coating in the future. Prices for carpet installation depend on the installation methods used.

Conditions for correct installation

Prepared carpet

Installation begins with careful measurements of the room and calculations required material. For this purpose, you should draw a plan of the room with all architectural elements and provide a margin of up to 100 mm on each side. The purchased carpet is brought into the room where the work will be carried out for acclimatization at least 24 hours in advance. It should lie down in a straightened state. The cost of carpet installation depends on the preferred installation method.

Main floor installation

If the work will be carried out according to concrete floor, it must be leveled, if necessary, sanded or filled with special leveling mixtures. Be sure to prime, otherwise dust will subsequently come from under the coating. On last stage– cover with a backing if necessary; Preparation wooden base possible in two ways. First, cover the subfloor with chipboard sheets, fill the cracks and treat with a primer. Secondly, remove all parts that protrude above the base level. Sand, prime, if necessary, fill with mixture to level the surface and cover with a backing.

Laying methods

The choice of carpet installation method depends on:

  • the type of material itself and the quality of its base;
  • level of room traffic;
  • functions performed by the premises;
  • quality of the subfloor.

Free installation with fixation around the perimeter

Laying carpet with fixation around the perimeter is the simplest method, in which the entire covering is placed loosely on the surface and leveled with a roller in the direction from the center to the base. V-shaped cuts are made near the corners and secured with plinths. IN doorway fixed with a metal strip.

    Advantages:

    • minimum time and money;
    • there is no need to purchase special equipment.

    Flaws:

    • furniture cannot be rolled or moved on such a surface;
    • involves exclusively dry cleaning of the coating..

Fixation with double-sided tape

Laying carpet on tape is carried out in several stages. First, double-sided tape must be glued around the perimeter of the base, and then placed over the entire floor in the form of a lattice with a side of a square of 500 mm. In this case, we do not remove the top film. Next, spread the material and, gradually removing protective layer from the tape, glue the carpet over the entire surface. Finish the job by installing the baseboard. Most customers prefer to lay carpet this way. Adhesive tape for flooring can be of different types: 63 or 150 mm wide. You should choose the type of tape after you determine what type of carpet you want to install.

Advantages:

  • easy to implement;
  • savings due to the fact that there is no need for a substrate;
  • It is possible to simply change the coating if necessary.

Flaws:

  • it is necessary to especially carefully prepare the subfloor to prevent the release of dust, as a result of which the tape will not be fixed;
  • It is imperative to maintain a constant temperature in the room due to the performance characteristics of the adhesive tape;
  • There is a risk of unevenness due to deformation of the tape.

Gluing

Carpet laying with glue is used in rooms where high traffic is expected. This method is labor-intensive, however, absolutely reliable. To complete the work, the canvas is folded with its front side inward, glue is applied to the free floor, and the carpet is laid on the prepared surface, pressing it to the base. Repeat the procedure with the second half. Finish by installing the baseboard. In addition to simple gluing, carpet is laid on glue with a backing. The difference between the simple technology is that the substrate is glued first, and the floor covering is glued on top of it.

Advantages:

  • Great for large areas;
  • easy to use;
  • guarantees durability;
  • provides the ability to clean with a washing vacuum cleaner.

Flaws:

  • it is impossible to reuse the coating;
  • After dismantling, there will be a need to carefully prepare the base surface for the next coating.

Stretching (laying without glue on a gripper strip)

Laying carpet on a gripper strip is a method based on the elasticity of the carpet. Special slats are attached around the entire perimeter of the room. The backing is laid out and secured to the base with a stapler. The spread carpet is stretched in all directions onto slats. To do this, use a special tool called a stretcher. Finish the work by installing the baseboard.

Carpet is a floor covering that has many advantages. It is warm, aesthetic, wear-resistant and, most importantly, affordable. With its help, it is easy to implement any design ideas: a correctly selected carpet will definitely fit harmoniously into the interior. The coating is ideal for bedrooms and children's rooms, where a feeling of coziness and comfort is especially important. You can walk on the carpet bare feet, it provides good thermal insulation and gives pleasant tactile sensations. This coating is also distinguished by the speed of flooring - if all the nuances are observed, laying carpet with your own hands will be easy and hassle-free.

Carpet calculation rules

If you do not want to encounter a shortage or excess of material during the installation of flooring, make an accurate calculation of it before going to the store. It is optimal that the entire room is covered with one whole piece of material. Why? Firstly, it is more aesthetically pleasing. Secondly, this way the coating will last much longer.

Carpet is a warm, beautiful and affordable floor covering for the home, which you can easily lay with your own hands, without outside help.

Draw a plan of the room, which will show all the doorways, partitions, niches, etc. and measure all the necessary distances. Carpet should be purchased with a small margin - 5-10 centimeters for each side.

How to prepare the foundation before starting work?

Before you begin laying the flooring, you should carefully prepare the base.

If the “base” for the material is concrete, you need to fill in all the unevenness, thoroughly clean and prime the surface. Laying carpet on a concrete floor without treating it with a primer is fraught with the constant “influx” of dust from under the covering - you will have to stand guard almost around the clock with a vacuum cleaner.

Regarding wooden floors, then they can be “processed” in two ways:

  1. Cover the surface with chipboard sheets, fill the joints, and treat everything with a primer.
  2. remove protruding parts (nail heads, screws), scrape the surface, prime and fill with self-leveling mixture.

To prevent the carpet from deteriorating and wearing out, it is advisable to lay a high-quality backing underneath it. It has been proven that it can extend the life of carpet by at least one and a half times. The underlayment gives the surface elasticity and strength, with it the floor will be even warmer and the sound insulation will be even better. This “bonus layer” will help create the effect of a dense and thick carpet, even if the covering itself is thin. The underlay, like carpet, should be purchased with a reserve.

The underlay provides the carpet with additional strength and elasticity, and also significantly extends its service life - by one and a half to two times

Methods for laying carpet

Carpeting can be done in the following ways:

  • free installation with fixation around the perimeter
  • installation using double-sided tape;
  • adhesive fixation;
  • double gluing (if a backing is used);
  • laying with gripper slats (stretching).

The specific technology for laying carpet is selected depending on:

  • the type of material and the nature of its base;
  • the purpose of the room, its level of traffic;
  • condition of the subfloor.

Option #1 - loose styling

This is the simplest and quick way install the coating. Suitable for small rooms where you can guarantee to get by with a single piece of carpet.

Work order:

  1. Lay the underlayment, secure it with a stapler every 20 centimeters, seal the joints with tape.
  2. Roll out the fabric with an allowance for the walls (about 5 centimeters).
  3. Using a regular roller, level the coating from the center to the walls.
  4. Make V-shaped cuts in the corners.
  5. Trim off all excess fabric and, stretching it well, secure it with a plinth.
  6. Near the doors, secure the covering with a metal strip.

This method does not require careful preparation surfaces, no additional waste. But here it is noted relatively low strength of the “structure”.

Here is a video example of the work:

Option #2 - fixation with double-sided tape

This method is suitable for both small and large rooms.

Work order:

  1. Apply double-sided tape first around the perimeter of the floor, and then in the form of a lattice with a side of 50 centimeters. Naturally, the paper film is not removed at this stage.
  2. Lay the carpet on the floor and, gradually removing the film, meter by meter, glue the carpet. Carpet strips are joined end to end.
  3. Trim off excess material with a knife.
  4. Install the plinth.

This option is characterized by ease of installation and the ability to quickly change the coating. But there is a risk of unevenness due to deformation of the adhesive tape.

Fixing with double-sided tape is a fairly simple way of laying carpet, which you can cope with even without the skills of such work.

Also, I would like to note that in addition to adhesive tape, there are special tapes for fixing:

Option #3 - adhesive fixation of carpet

Used in spacious rooms, as well as in rooms with high traffic. This method is quite labor-intensive, but the reward for the work is worthy - absolute reliability of installation.

Work order:

  1. Lay out the carpet.
  2. Fold the canvas in half and apply glue to the opened half of the floor.
  3. Return the bent section to the “original position”, while pressing firmly and, as it were, stretching the coating.
  4. Do the same with the second half of the canvas, as well as with the remaining canvases.
  5. Trim the carpet and install baseboards.

This option guarantees strength, durability of installation and the ability to be used for cleaning washing vacuum cleaner. But then reuse coverage excluded.

In large rooms with high traffic, it is recommended to lay carpet with glue - this will ensure maximum durability of the coating

This method is most often used in production premises, hotels or trading floors. Where the load on the coating is quite large, there is a need for rigid fixation. In addition, it is better than others for large rooms where several sheets of material have to be joined.

Video example of the work:

Option #4 - “stretching” or choosing practical

This is a glue-free installation method carried out using special gripper slats. It is based on the elasticity of carpet, its flexibility to tension.

Work order:

  1. Secure grippers around the perimeter of the room.
  2. Lay the backing and secure it with a stapler.
  3. Lay out the carpet.
  4. Using a stretcher, pull the covering onto the slats in all directions.
  5. Trim or fold excess material.
  6. Install the baseboard.

The advantage is that when changing the coating, you can leave the same substrate. But this the method is relevant for rooms whose length and width do not exceed 5 meters, and without sufficient experience it is difficult to carry out such installation.

Laying carpet on stairs

There are two ways to install carpet on flights of stairs. The first - “waterfall” - involves the use of a single piece of material. This installation is only possible on straight stairs.

The second method is called “hat” and can be used both on straight lines and on spiral staircases. Its essence is that each step is covered with a separate piece of material. As a rule, paper templates are used to cut out carpeting. You can get such a pattern by covering the step and riser with a sheet of paper and pressing it in the corners with a spatula.

Considering the increased load on the surface, experts recommend using the adhesive installation method for staircases. This is what it looks like:

Secrets of perfect editing

To appearance the carpet has not deteriorated during installation and subsequent operation, be sure to take into account the following nuances:

  • Before installation, the coating must rest at room temperature;
  • with direct adhesive fixation, you need to closely monitor whether bubbles or “humps” appear. Pay maximum attention to high-quality rolling of the coating, since after the surface has dried, defects can only be eliminated using radical measures;
  • When working with jute-based carpet, the adhesive composition should be applied very carefully, avoiding its “overdose” - passing through natural base, excess glue can irreparably disfigure the pile;
  • the pattern, which continues through the seam, must be perfectly adjusted in length, width and diagonal - otherwise high aesthetics of the coating cannot be achieved;
  • ensure the same direction of the carpet pile, even if there is no pattern or design on the covering;
  • It is better to start cutting the carpet from the center, and not from the corner, in order to prevent unevenness;
  • the joint of the panels will be less noticeable if it is perpendicular to the window (located in the direction sunlight);
  • When cutting off excess coating, always leave a small gap between the material and the wall;
  • For about a day after laying the carpet, it is better not to “disturb” it - do not walk on it, do not install furniture;
  • It is recommended to hide interior carpet joints under special thresholds - in stores you can find devices for every taste and color.

The ease of use of the floor covering largely depends on its correct installation. Violation of technology will lead to earlier wear. Proper installation of carpet is not such a difficult task and can be done independently. And it won't take that much time.

Carpet installation can vary. Choice specific method depends on the purpose and size of the room. But in order to make a final decision, you need to take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations. So, here are the styling technologies that exist:

There is one more point. It is recommended to lay a special underlay under the carpet. Even if a covering with a very short and dense pile is used, some substrates will give a feeling of softness - when the foot “sinks” into the covering. But this is not the main thing. The main thing is that when using a carpet underlay, the service life of the coating almost doubles. And another plus is increased sound insulation.

Carpet underlay - types, choice

If you want to have a soft, cozy floor on which you can not only walk, but also sit and lie on, it would also be nice to lay a backing under the carpet. This layer makes it possible not only to get a soft floor, but also to make it easier to remove the coating and change it. And if a dense and thick underlay is laid, it will also improve sound insulation. Not dramatically, of course, but it will be quieter.

Laying carpet with backing takes place in two stages. First, the substrate is glued to the prepared base. After it has dried, the coating is laid. There can be any method of fixing the carpet to the backing. Again, it depends on the load and the presence of furniture on wheels, the need for replacement, etc.

The substrate can be:

  • textile;
  • felt (natural felt or synthetic);
  • reinforced;
  • foamed vinyl;
  • polyurethane foam materials;
  • rubber (corrugated or flat).

In principle, it is necessary to select according to a set of characteristics, but it is important that the substrate is elastic. It’s easy to check its elasticity: you need to crush it. If it crumples up without effort, it won’t fit. If you managed to squeeze only slightly and after removing the force it immediately returned to its previous shape - it’s normal. Some types of substrates (rubber, for example) cannot be wrinkled at all. But it also depends on the thickness. Optimal for home and apartment - 0.65-1.00 cm.

By the way, if you have linoleum laid on the floor and it hasn’t come off, hasn’t come off in waves, but has simply lost its appearance or become boring, it can also be used as a backing. I mean, it doesn’t have to be deleted.

How to lay carpet on linoleum? Yes, in any way. Carpet with a rubberized layer can be laid using any method. Even if it’s just secured with tape. More soft options It is better to glue it on a felt base, but not with glue, but with a retainer (read below).

Base requirements

In order for the carpet to serve for a long time and not lose its appearance, it must be placed on level base. Since the coating is “hairy” and elastic, there are no special requirements for evenness. The coating will follow the contours of the base. But here on the ground sharp changes After some time, abrasions form - here the coating is subject to increased wear. To prevent this from happening, here's what to avoid:

  • Sudden changes in height - steps, holes.
  • Unstable foundation.
  • Dust, debris, sand.

All these shortcomings are easily eliminated. With dust and debris, everything is generally clear - thoroughly clean with a vacuum cleaner before installation. It is better to eliminate irregularities. If there are noticeable differences in height, they can be sanded or filled with putty - if it is a plank floor or caulked repair mixture- if the base is concrete. If you don’t want to buy repair materials, you just need to mix cement (1 part) with sand (3-4 parts), add a little PVA and dilute with water. But the disadvantage of this composition is that it must be left for at least two weeks so that there is no excess moisture in the base. Repair crews work faster.

If you want to lay carpet on a wooden floor, you must first level it. You don't have to do this to do this. You can sand a board or lay plywood under the carpet. Plywood is expensive nowadays, so any dense and durable sheet material (gypsum fiber board, etc.) will do.

You can lay carpet on any dry and level base: on a concrete, wooden floor, on laid plywood, OSB and other materials

If you want to lay carpet on a concrete floor, then you don’t have to put anything on the screed if it is dry and level. But for a more comfortable feeling, you can use a backing or lay plywood. If only for now. If necessary, you need to take care of waterproofing.

How to join carpet

First of all, try to make the joint not in an area where people walk or that is constantly in sight; try to calculate it so that most of the joint is under the furniture. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not critical. You just need to make the joint neat. There are two ways to join carpet.

First way

The first option is suitable for coverings without a pattern and with short pile without loops. We carry out cutting on the spot - after we have laid out the coating “on permanent place registration." The joint turns out perfect.

Next, glue the carpet at the joint. We turn the covering to the sides, apply glue or glue double-sided tape. We return the coating, smooth it, press it. When fixing, we try to make the connection without any gaps at all. It has some elasticity, so everything is real.

Second way

The second method of joining two pieces of carpet is both simpler and more difficult. Only this is available on the surface with drawings. First, the edge of one piece is trimmed - between the loops. The factory edge is rarely normal. But if you don’t have any flaws, you can do it without trimming. The second piece is laid with the selection of the pattern (if necessary). If the edge does not meet somewhere, cut again between the loops.

When joining carpet, the choice of method depends on the availability of the pattern.

This method is usually used for carpet with medium and long pile. Small errors are not visible, as they are covered with pile. But it is still possible to achieve an almost perfect match when gluing. When laying carpet with glue, fixative or tape, you can slightly stretch or tamp the covering until it matches perfectly. You know how to join carpet. To decide, you can try both techniques on small scraps. This way you will understand what will be best in your case.

Free installation of carpet and fixation with tape

To lay carpet in a free-flowing manner, you need to know some tricks. First, if it is not possible to cover the floor in one piece, the joint is glued. There is no way without this. The simplest option is to fix the joint with double-sided tape. Two strips of double-sided tape on both sides of the seam.

You need to cut the carpet with a sharp knife, placing a board or plywood underneath

Second. You cannot lay only material brought from the store. We bring the carpet into the house and let it sit for several days - at least two for sure. Next comes the actual carpet installation. First, we measure the exact dimensions of the room. We assume that there should be a gap of 5-8 mm to the walls. This is the so-called compensation gap. It allows the coating to expand and shrink with changes in humidity and temperature. If you lay the coating closely at once, “waves” will appear on the coating as the temperature rises.

Technology for laying carpet under baseboards

So, we cut the carpet to the required size and lay it out in the room. That's not all. There are a few more steps.

Free styling carpet is suitable for rooms with an area of no more than 12 square meters. With an area of up to 20 squares, you can glue it with tape. It must be glued around the perimeter and in stripes every meter. Additional stripes at the junction.

We use tape

The technology for laying carpet on tape is not too different. We start work after it has rested for several days, cut it a little smaller than the size, wait a couple of days. If the gap remains within the desired limits, we begin to fasten it. We turn the covering away from the walls towards the center. We fix the tape in the designated places and along the walls. If you will fix the covering with skirting boards, then glue it at a distance of about 20 cm parallel to the walls. With free flooring “up to the baseboards” we glue the tape right next to them.

Laying carpet under the baseboard is suitable for small rooms up to 12 square meters in area

If necessary, roll the covering and apply tape in the previously occupied area. Then remove the protective tape and roll out the coating. It's simple. It is important that when fixing the carpet, it is rolled out gradually, without waves. To do this, smooth it using a board, pressing it with its edge. You can also use a large spatula.

How to lay carpet on a gripper

Laying carpet on a gripper is one of the types of free installation. It’s just that the coating does not lie under its own weight, but is slightly stretched and fixed to the pins of the grip rail. The work requires special tools. They cost a lot, so it’s unlikely that anyone will buy them for one-time use. In general, we will describe this method, rather, for familiarization.

These are grippers. But this method of installation is now unpopular

A gripper is a plank of wood with spikes protruding at a certain angle. The slats are nailed to the floor close to the walls. The covering is cut out with a margin - for the curvature of the walls. The carpet is laid in the middle of the room and rolled out to the walls. Using another device, it is pulled and hooked onto the protruding spikes. The excess is trimmed with another special device flush with the wall. The edge is covered with a strip of the same carpet.

Gluing

In large rooms (more than 20 square meters in area) or with heavy loads on the coating, best way carpet laying - gluing. But today, gluing can be different.

The carpet can be laid using glue or fixation

Types of carpet adhesives

Just a few years ago, gluing carpet was the main technique. It was glue that was used. But in this case it is difficult to remove the coating. Often it delaminates - part remains glued to the base, part comes off. Today there is a composition called fixation. It does not harden completely, but forms a sticky layer. Similar to the type found on adhesive tape. That is, after treatment with fixation, the entire floor becomes a huge tape and the carpet can be re-laid several times. How much depends on the smoothness of the base. If it's felt, there will be hairs left on the glue. And "several" in in this case- two or three. If the base is rubberized, then you can peel it off up to a dozen times.

So, there are two types of carpet adhesives:

  • Glue. Glues to the base. When dismantled, part of the coating remains glued. It needs to be removed somehow. When applying, use a B1 spatula. Average consumption is 450-500 grams per square meter.

  • Latch. Creates a sticky film (like tape) that simply holds the coating in place. When dismantling, the coating is completely removed; individual “hairs” may remain. If it is necessary to replace the adhesive composition, it is removed with a special remover. The carpet fixing is applied with a velor roller or spatula A1. Approximate consumption is 150-200 g per square meter.

So installation with fixation is more reliable than with tape. If it doesn’t stick very well right away, you can re-lay it without any problems. Or remove the dirty carpet and clean it, and then lay it again. But how to glue the carpet to the floor is up to you. Maybe you trust more regular glue. That's your business.

Latch technology

Laying carpet with fixation differs from conventional gluing in that after applying the composition you have to wait some time - 20-30 minutes until the composition dries and stops getting dirty. It's easy to check - just touch it with your finger. If it sticks but remains clean, you can glue it. And again, the delivered coating must rest at home for at least two days. Next, you can begin installation.

Here is the technology for laying carpet for fixation:

As you can see, attaching the carpet to the clamp is not too difficult. The best part is that if it doesn't work out, you can try again. So you don't have to worry too much. And there's no need to rush. Carpet installation can last as long as you need, since the fixing layer does not change over time. Comfortable.

Laying carpet with glue

When using a traditional adhesive composition, the technology is different, but only in terms of working with the glue itself. The procedure - laying out the carpet, trimming, rolling - all this is exactly the same. Only after applying the glue do not wait, but immediately roll out the coating and immediately smooth it out. The task is to press well so that no swelling occurs.

When laying carpet with glue, you need to spread the base and roll out the covering

To properly glue the carpet to the floor, you need to act quickly. The period of possible correction is far from endless. Therefore in fast pace Apply glue to the other half and glue it, making sure it matches the seam. While the glue has not set, you can try to tear off the previously glued edge, if necessary. But if time has already passed, it is better not to take risks and achieve a match using the more “fresh” part. That is, all corrections are made only with the later laid half.

The main value of every home is comfort, and many things contribute to its creation.

An important one among them is a beautiful and warm floor.

If carpet is an unaffordable luxury for you, then carpet will adequately replace it.

It is cheaper, but a little more capricious when installing.

First of all, you should remember that You can lay carpet only after all rough repair work has been completed. Otherwise, the surface may get dirty and lose its appearance.

However, this nuance will only please you with its final result and you can safely enjoy the beautiful and comfortable floor.

Preparing the floor base

Carpet feels comfortable not only on concrete, but also on laminate, as well as on parquet and linoleum.

Strict requirements are imposed on the base of the floor: a perfectly flat surface and cleanliness (there should not even be dust).

Besides, the humidity of the base itself and the room should not exceed 75%. In addition, it is necessary to carry out several preparatory steps:

  • fill all cracks and potholes in concrete with cement and primer;
  • Wash the linoleum well, remove dirt, degrease, let dry and remove wrinkles, if any;
  • Clean the wooden base from debris, wash and dry.

What to lay the carpet on?

Using an underlay (intermediate material between the base and the carpet) has a number of advantages:

  • makes the coating softer;
  • promotes sound insulation;
  • increases the service life of the coating by approximately one and a half times.

Carpet is usually laid on a backing, which is usually made of felt, polyethylene foam or polyurethane foam, but it must be resilient.

When purchasing, be sure to check this - bend it in half. If the material bends easily, don't buy it.

Laying methods

Methods for laying carpet depend on the room in which the carpet will be laid.. If it is a balcony, loggia, storage room, small children's room, then free installation with fastening under the baseboard will be sufficient.

If the room is more spacious (hall, living room), then it is better to use the method of stretching or gluing using double-sided tape.

In offices, hotels, cafes, canteens and other places with high traffic, only installation with glue will give an acceptable result.

Remember that carpet is not purchased according to the size of the room, but with an allowance on each side of about 5 cm. Moreover, it is better to get by with a single piece of material.

Free styling

  1. We unroll the carpet around the entire perimeter of the room and lay it with the factory edge close to one of the walls. In all other directions, the coating should creep slightly onto the walls.
  2. We straighten the “waves” and “wrinkles” with a heavy rubber roller from the center to the walls. After this, firmly press the edges of the carpet with your hand to the junction of the wall and the floor.
  3. Carefully cut off strips of excess material along the fold line with a knife and secure the carpet with baseboards.

Gluing with tape

You can glue it directly to the base, or to the substrate.

  1. First, double-sided tape is attached around the perimeter of the base.
  2. Then a grid is made with a step of 50 cm. We glue one side, and do not touch the other for now.
  3. We place pre-cut pieces of carpet on top of the tape. We do this carefully, carefully adjusting it to the walls.
  4. When all proportions are met, remove the protective layer from the tape and glue the coating to it.
  5. Carefully smooth each part with a roller. If a backing is used, then repeat these steps with adhesive tape twice.

Stretching method

This is the most difficult of carpet installation methods.. For stretching, you will need special slats on which there are 2 rows of nails driven in at an angle of 45 degrees, as well as a special tool - a stretcher (kicker).

It allows you to stretch the material a little, but you need to do this carefully, since using the stretcher incorrectly can damage the coating.

The sequence of actions when laying carpet using the stretching method is as follows:

  1. Grippers (slats) are fixed along the perimeter of the room so that the nails face the wall.
  2. A substrate is placed on the floor, carefully adjusted to the grippers. It is better to secure it with a stapler.
  3. Carpet is placed on top. It is cut to fit the walls and, with the help of a stretcher, the edges of the carpet are stretched, and then tightly secured with the help of grippers.

Gluing with glue

This is laying carpet “tightly”. It is also available in two versions – with and without a backing.

First you need to unroll the carpet, carefully straighten it, and trim off the excess. The following steps depend on the room in which you need to install the carpet:

  1. Long corridor . We bend the covering and coat it with glue in the middle. This is done so that the center is well secured and does not fidget during further work. Then we apply glue to the remaining parts of the base and press it.
    In this case, the amount of glue must be strictly dosed (depending on the quality and thickness of the material). It must be applied in a circular motion with a notched spatula, otherwise there will be no uniform distribution.

    When finished, you should walk over the entire area of the coating with a heavy rubber roller to let the air out, otherwise you cannot avoid the formation of bubbles and bumps on the surface.

  2. Wide room. In this case, bend one half, apply glue and carefully glue it. We do the same with the other half.

If you are using underlay, then first you will need to glue it to the base, and then lay the carpet to the underlay.

  • When purchasing carpet, add another 10% to the required volume.. This allowance will be enough for the carpet to cover the entire area of the room (even if uneven walls and the absence of right angles).
  • In order for the carpet to be “obedient”, it is necessary to bring it into the room at least 24 hours before. Works on correct installation Carpeting should be carried out at an air temperature not lower than +15 degrees, the temperature of the glue and the material itself from +17 degrees and a humidity not higher than 75%.
  • You can lay carpet only when all other repair work has been completed..
  • If there are joints, the seams should be made perpendicular to the windows, then they will be practically invisible.
  • You need to take care of the carpet with a powerful vacuum cleaner in “dry” mode, and remove heavy dirt with special means.

Requirements for the premises when laying carpet

The carpet will be securely fixed to the floor if the room provides a certain temperature regime and humidity does not exceed sanitary standards. You cannot lay a covering in the following cases:
  • If the temperature and humidity for three days in a row differ from sanitary standards: the temperature is not in the range from +18 to +27 degrees, and the humidity exceeds 75%.
  • With sudden changes in temperature and humidity, even if the parameters remain within tolerance. In this case, the banner will creep.
When temperatures fluctuate slowly over a long period of time, the material can adapt to changing conditions. For example, the fastening strength will remain the same if the temperature changes from summer to winter.

If there was no carpet in the room before, remove the doors from their hinges or lift them, otherwise they will not be able to be opened after finishing the work.

Preparing the floor surface before laying carpet

Preparation for laying carpet consists of determining the size of the material, inspecting and processing the rough base, purchasing special tool and carrying out other work that guarantees high-quality floor covering.

Before laying carpet, you must carefully prepare the floor. On concrete surface seal all the cracks and knock down the protrusions. The remnants of the old coating are removed from it. Small cracks are sealed with crack sealant, large cracks are sealed with textured mastic. The base is treated with a deep penetration primer, otherwise dust will constantly appear from under the carpet.

Subject to availability greasy stains remove them with solvent. Treat the clean floor with a solution of 1 part bleach and 15 parts water, which will destroy bacteria and mold. After special processing rinse it with clean water.

The coating adheres well flat surface, so check the levelness of the floor using a hydrostatic level or other method. Deviation from the horizontal within the room is allowed no more than 4-5 mm. If necessary, it is leveled with means intended for specific material floor.

Concrete has the properties to absorb moisture well, so lay carpet on it with a synthetic base, with olefin pile or without it at all.

Cover wooden floors with chipboard sheets, seal the cracks with wood putty, and remove any protruding parts. After the putty has dried, prime the surface and sand the wood. After installing the chipboard, make sure that the doors open freely. If necessary, trim the door leaf.

The most difficult thing to refinish is old, worn or uneven parquet. To level the surface, you can use a solution intended for wooden surfaces, or lay a plasterboard sheet on top.

A backing is laid on the prepared floor, which extends the service life of the material due to reduced friction of the carpet on the hard floor. In addition, the lining increases the sound insulation and thermal insulation of the coating, extending its service life. It hides uneven floors, allowing you to do work without leveling the surface.

Be sure to use a backing when laying the panel on the parquet. This is due to the fact that when walking, the dies act on the coating at their joints. The choice of lining depends on the type of carpet and the technology of its attachment to the floor. For example, a polyurethane backing is made with top layer made of polyethylene and is ideally combined with carpet laying using the stretching method.

Do not lay carpet on warm floors. The canvas will not allow the room to heat up, and there is a danger that as the temperature rises, the carpet will creep.

Tools and materials for carpet installation

To accurately determine the size of the carpet, draw a floor plan of the room to scale and indicate on it the location of doors, niches, ledges and other elements. Determine the size of the canvas from the drawing, increase it by 10% for possible shrinkage, and when purchasing, add 10-15 cm to one side.

If the floor irregular shape, measure maximum length and width and buy a blank according to these dimensions. Correctly taken measurements will allow you to cover the surface in one piece. Typically, carpet is sold in rolls 2, 4, 6 m wide, from which parts can be cut for standard rooms.

When purchasing, make sure that manufacturers allow the carpet to be attached to the floor in the way you intended. The material indicates where the canvas can be laid, for example, on the stairs.

During transportation and storage, do not bend the material; creases may remain. Before laying the carpet, bring it into the room and leave it for 3 days. The material must warm up completely, and the air between the fibers must acquire the humidity of the room.

Without special tools, it will be problematic to cover the floor with carpet well. Buy or rent the following equipment:

  1. Knife for cutting carpet - vocational adaptation, reminiscent sewing machine. It looks like a corner with a handle. The knife is pulled by the handle and pressed to the floor. The cut strip comes out from the side.
  2. A roller knife for cutting carpet is a tool for experienced workers. It is lighter and costs less than professional equipment, but in the wrong hands, using a roller knife can ruin the coating.
  3. Knife with spare blades - for cutting carpet after gluing.
  4. Notched trowel - for applying glue (in case of gluing carpet).
  5. Scissors - for finishing the edges.
  6. Tape measure - for measuring the size of a room.
  7. Grippers are devices for tensioning carpet when laying the covering using the “stretching” method.
  8. A special roller is for straightening and rolling out the coating. Compared to the painting one, it is wider and harder.
  9. Metal ruler for cutting material.
If you plan to glue carpet, you can determine the approximate amount based on the area adhesive solution. The average consumption of the mixture is 0.5 kg per 1 m 2. The exact information is provided on the product packaging.

The junctions of the carpet with other coverings are covered with top metal profiles. Make sure you have them.

Technology for installing carpet on the floor

If you want to install carpet yourself, check out standard instructions for performing work in different rooms.

Free laying of carpet

Applicable for small rooms, where the floor can be covered in one piece, for example, on balconies, in dressing rooms and other uninhabited rooms. This is the fastest way to install carpet.

The operating procedure is as follows:

  • A backing is laid on the floor and secured with a stapler. The staples are hammered in after 20 cm.
  • Roll out the carpet on the floor with a 5 cm fold on the walls. It is recommended to place the material with the pile facing the door. This makes it easier to clean.
  • Using a roller, smooth the canvas from the center to the edges.
  • Cut V-shaped tabs into the corners.
  • Trim the carpet around the perimeter of the walls. Start trimming from the center to avoid unevenness. Leave guaranteed gaps of 5-10 mm between the canvas and the wall. They will prevent the appearance of wrinkles and bloating.
  • After cutting, the panel should lie on the floor for some time to straighten out and rest. After this, check again for gaps - the carpet should not touch the walls.
  • Stretch the fabric and secure it in this state with a plinth.
  • Secure the carpet near the doors with a metal strip.
  • If several parts of the covering are laid on the floor, coat the edges of the joints at a width of 15 cm special glue PVA, and then press down with a weight.
Free laying of carpet does not require careful preparation of the base, but the method of fastening to the floor is not very reliable. You cannot move furniture on it; it is not recommended to clean the material with a vacuum cleaner due to the danger of pulling the carpet out from under the baseboard. Wrinkles may appear on the panel over time.

In small areas, the carpet does not need to be fixed; it is enough to process the edges with an overlocker. You will get a small mat that can be removed and cleaned.

Fixing carpet with double-sided tape

The method does not depend on the size of the room and uneven floors, but it is recommended to use it in rooms with an area of no more than 30 m2. In large rooms there is carpet on double sided tape may wrinkle and the tape may become deformed when heated.

This fastening method is reliable and allows you to quickly replace the coating. You can move furniture along the fixed panel and even ride on roller skates without fear of it coming out of the baseboard.

To work, you will need universal double-sided tape to secure the carpet. Tapes are produced in widths from 63 to 180 mm. They are able to retain the coating from 2 to 7 years. The wider the tape, the more reliable the connection.

Perform the work as follows:

  1. Wash the floor thoroughly.
  2. Remove the protective paper from one side of the tape and stick it to the floor around the perimeter of the room, and then parallel to the walls, in increments of 50 cm. As a result, the tape should form a lattice. Do not remove the protective layer from the top side of the tape.
  3. Lay the canvas on the surface, level it, cut off the excess parts around the perimeter of the floor, as indicated above.
  4. Fold one side of the carpet to the middle of the other half.
  5. Gradually removing protective film from the tape in place of the raised carpet, roll out the cloth on the floor.
  6. Repeat the procedure for the second half of the material.
  7. Install baseboards.

If you need to cover the floor with several pieces of carpet, follow the recommendations for connecting them. Please note that the parts for covering the floor in one room must be from the same roll. The cuts are laid with an overlap of 4-5 cm on each other, and then two sheets are cut off with a knife at once. The ends are bent, the cut parts are removed and released. The joints are smoothed with a roller.

Gluing carpet to the floor

Laying carpet with glue is the most reliable way fixing the coating. The method is used in spacious rooms, industrial premises, hotels, restaurants - i.e. in places where the material is subject to a large load and reliable fastening of the panel to the floor is necessary. This method is convenient for laying several pieces of covering.

The flooring can be glued in two ways - single and double. Single fix the coating on smooth, well-prepared surfaces. Double gluing does not require leveling the floor; you can attach the carpet to lumpy and non-horizontal floors (with the maximum permissible slope). In this case, a special bedding is first glued, and the main covering is placed on top of it.

There should be a mark on the carpet indicating that it can be glued. Familiarize yourself with the base materials on which the brand of glue depends. The solution should be liquid so that it does not smear on the floor, but is adjusted in the desired direction. If there are areas with linoleum, you need to make sure that if the composition gets on it, there will be no chemical reaction.

The following adhesives are suitable for gluing:

  • Reactive two-component adhesive. Specially designed for gluing carpet. After hardening, it remains elastic. The adhesive layer retains its strength properties at very low and high temperatures. The two-component composition can fix the material even in a vertical plane. The solution sets within an hour and dries completely after two days.
  • Disperse adhesives. Diluted with water. The most famous of dispersed adhesives is PVA. He sticks various materials, has no odor, does not burn and does not emit harmful substances.
  • Universal formulations. These include Forbo glue. It is made on an acrylic base, has high adhesive ability, and is easy to use.
The procedure for gluing carpet is as follows:
  1. Spread the canvas on the floor, level it and trim it with a margin of 10 cm on each side. If several pieces are laid, the joints must be placed perpendicular to the window, in the direction of sunlight, so they are less noticeable. Also make sure that the pile on different parts of the coating is in the same direction. Fold the workpiece in half.
  2. Apply strips of glue to the exposed surface with a notched trowel 25-30 cm wide so that a grid is formed on the floor in increments of 50 cm. You can also make strips from the center to the walls. There is a different tool for each type of glue, famous manufacturers They sell the device along with the solution, but more often the parameters of the spatula are indicated on the product packaging.
  3. Do not apply too thick a layer of the mixture. An overdose can cause the solution to appear on the front side and ruin the pile. Be especially careful when working with jute-based carpet. Remember that re-fastening the material is impossible; the canvas torn from the floor is unsuitable for re-laying.
  4. Spread the canvas and press it well to the floor. Fold back the other half and repeat the procedure.
  5. Trim excess material around the perimeter of the room using a ruler and sharp knife. When trimming internal corners First, the canvas is cut diagonally; you don’t have to cut it all the way to the floor.
  6. Nail the baseboards around the perimeter of the room.
After gluing, do not walk on the canvas until it is completely dry and do not install furniture. If the technology is followed, there will be no bubbles or wrinkles on the surface.

Fastening carpet using the stretching method

In a similar way, you can attach the material to wooden floors or surfaces covered with linoleum. Carpet installation is carried out using special strips - grippers, similar to thin slats with inclined points.

There should be markings on the carpet that allow it to be secured using this method, since grippers are designed only for certain types products. The instructions included with the covering also provide recommendations on the need to lay underlayment under the flooring.

The operating procedure is as follows:

  • Place grippers along the walls at the distance specified in the instructions for using the material.
  • Lay the carpet on the floor and trim along the outer edge of the batten. Using a special device, move the gripper with carpet to the walls, while the upper points hold the covering, and the lower one prevents it from moving back.
  • After tensioning the covering, skirting boards with a special hollow in the middle are installed.
It is recommended to lay carpet on parquet using the “stretching” method. In this case, the dies are slightly damaged, but this method extends the service life of the coating.

There are two methods of laying panels on flights of stairs - universal for buildings of any configuration, for even structures. In the first case, each element of the staircase is covered with a separate piece. To determine the shape and size of the workpiece, use a paper template. The sheet is applied to the steps and risers, pressed in the corners with a spatula and outlined around the perimeter. According to the template, a blank is cut out of the panel and then glued. Straight stairs are covered with a whole piece of carpet.
