What is better to choose a drill or screwdriver for the home. What is the difference between a screwdriver and a drill - the key difference between them The main types of screwdrivers

Hi all! In today's article, I will tell you how a drill differs from a screwdriver, since not everyone understands the difference between them and, as a result, does not know what to choose.

To begin with, I propose to define the terms. Based on the terminology of manufacturers, they call the device shown in Figure 1 screwdrivers. This is a power screwdriver with speed control, reverse, and also has a device that allows you to avoid breaking the splines of the nozzle (bits).

Picture 1

And manufacturers refer to drills as the machine shown in Figure 2, as well as the devices shown in Figures 3 and 4, which are popularly called drill drivers (mains or cordless) or simply screwdrivers.

Figure 2
Figure 3 Figure 4

In order not to get confused, in this article we will assign the following names to each unit:

  • the tool from figure 1 I will call a screwdriver
  • from figure 2 - drill
  • from figures 3 and 4 - a drill driver.

At the same time, I note that the difficulty of choosing arises precisely between the last two types, since with a conventional screwdriver everything seems to be so clear. But I will describe all three devices early.

screwdriver

A screwdriver can only be used for tightening self-tapping screws, since it has only a hexagonal seat just for bits. Although it should be said that there are drills with a hex fit, like bits, but usually they only come in small diameters, and they are not commercially available everywhere.

Thus, according to this tool, we conclude that it can only be purchased for tightening self-tapping screws. At the same time, we remember that it is tied to the network, which means that it will not work autonomously with it.

It is most convenient to use this unit in any assembly shop, where work on screwing screws or screws is carried out at one working place.

Drill

The main function of a drill is drilling. However, if there is an adjustment of speed and reverse (and they are now on most models), it can also be used as a screwdriver.

However, they lack any mechanism to automatically prevent the bit from falling off.

Often, when a self-tapping screw is tightened with a drill, its head may drown unnecessarily in the material, or the slots of the bit scroll in the head, which can cause them to be torn off.

Therefore, here you have to rely only on your hands and head.

According to the drill, the verdict will be as follows. Buy it if you are going to mainly drill. But at the same time, keep in mind that sometimes it can also be used as a screwdriver - in the end it is in any case more convenient than twisting with a screwdriver.

Drill driver

This tool is universal. They can both drill and screw the screw without fear of spoiling the bit or drowning the hat unnecessarily in the material.

There is an adjustable mechanism (popularly referred to as a ratchet) through which the rotation passes. When a certain resistance you set is reached, it simply turns with a click, and the bit at the same time stays in place safe and sound.

In addition, a drill/driver differs from a conventional electric drill in that a gearbox is installed on it, which has a larger gear ratio. Therefore, with the same engine power, a drill-driver has a greater torque value. And this means that, for example, a corded drill/driver with a 400 W motor power will have the same torque as a 700-800 W drill. However, the dimensions will be smaller.

The payoff for this is a lower number of maximum spindle revolutions. If on drills it reaches a value of 3000 rpm, then on drills, their number is no more than 600-800. And if it is two-speed, then all the same, the revolutions will not exceed 1500 per minute.

Thus, we conclude that a drill driver is a good universal option, since it can perform most of both drilling and screwdriver work.

However, such a tool will not replace a drill in jobs where a high rotational speed of the chuck is required. This, for example, is the drilling of bricks, when the work takes place in shock mode. And although some models of drill drivers have an impact mechanism, due to low speeds it is not very effective.

It is also worth remembering that drills are not only used for drilling, but also, for example, for mixing mortars with a mixing attachment. And here, too, high turnover is required. Therefore, a drill-driver is also poorly suited for such work.

Separately, it should be said about cordless drills-screwdrivers. Firstly, drills are made with a battery, but there are no classic drills with a rotation speed of up to 3000 rpm with a battery.

Secondly, the use of battery technology has both its pros and cons.

The pluses include the following:

  • autonomy of work - that is, the ability to work for a certain amount of time away from power grids with pre-charged batteries;
  • no wires, which is convenient, for example, when working on the roof.

The downsides are the following:

  • battery aging - with frequent use, they usually last no more than 3 years, and if used rarely, they still age and in any case become unusable after 5-8 years, even if they just lie idle;
  • the impossibility of immediately starting work if it suddenly turned out that the batteries were discharged.

These are my thoughts on the matter. I hope that after reading the article you understand for yourself what tool you need. Let me finish with this - see you soon!

In the modern market of power tools, you can find a wide variety of options that significantly facilitate construction, finishing and other types of work. When it comes to comparing a screwdriver and a drill, many people simply do not see any difference in these devices. Of course, they can be understood: in appearance, both power tools are very similar, even more - they can perform the same function. For example, many craftsmen use a screwdriver as a drill - that is, they make a hole using a special drill (the main purpose of a drill). However, there is a difference between the two considered devices, and it is significant. In this article, we will first of all focus on the signs of difference between them.

Definition

screwdriver necessary for tightening and unscrewing small screws and bolts. The power tool has a built-in mechanism that stops the rotation of the chuck at the moment when the resistance of this rotation reaches its maximum. This is a very important point, because the mechanism prevents damage to the screwdriver bit. By the way, you should definitely take into account that the aforementioned mechanism has an adjustment. To date, there are two main types of device: screwdrivers that operate on the network, and models that operate on battery power. Of course, the price of power tools is different.

DeWALT Cordless Screwdriver

Drill necessary for drilling holes on various surfaces. It is widely used in construction, finishing, carpentry and assembly work. An interesting fact is that the first electric tool for drilling holes appeared in the middle of the 19th century, and since then it has been constantly improved. A modern drill has two modes of operation: normal and impact. If in the first case everything is more or less clear - a drill is necessary for drilling ordinary holes in the wall and wooden surfaces, then in the second case it should be clarified a little. The impact mode is activated when it is necessary to drill holes in stone or concrete, i.e. in harder surfaces.

Comparison

We have already found out that these power tools perform completely different tasks. But the main differences don't end there:

  • The rotation speed of the chuck of a screwdriver is significantly lower, plus there is no inertial moment. In other words, as soon as you turn off the screwdriver (lower your finger from the button), the chuck immediately stops, while at the drill it spins for some time by inertia.
  • Safety engineering. When working with a drill, experts recommend wearing safety glasses so that small particles formed during the drilling process do not get into your eyes. You don’t need to follow special safety precautions with a screwdriver, you just need to be careful and careful when working with a nozzle.
  • Various operating modes. It has already been noted above that the drill can include both normal and impact modes. Screwdriver is regulated only by the speed of rotation, no more.

Findings site

  1. A screwdriver differs from a drill in its purpose: it is designed for tightening self-tapping screws, bolts and screws, and a drill is for drilling holes.
  2. In a drill, the rotation speed of the cartridge is noticeably higher.
  3. The screwdriver has a special mechanism that, in case of increased resistance, stops the chuck.
  4. It is more dangerous to work with a drill, especially if safety precautions are not followed.

During construction work, a screwdriver and a drill are indispensable tools. They are the most demanded among mechanized devices. Thanks to these devices, work efficiency is significantly increased. They are mainly used for tightening fasteners and making holes. Such devices can be powered by mains or batteries. There are also models that run on gasoline. Rotation in such devices can be supplemented by impact actions. A fairly common option is a drill-driver. These tools are universal. However, it is worth understanding the features of their operation in more detail.

What is a drill

The drill as a tool appeared a very long time ago. Thanks to this tool, it was much easier to make holes in wood and stone. After the invention of the electric motor, the possibilities of such devices have expanded significantly. The metallurgical industry also played a significant role in their development. There were special drills. This made it possible to create precise holes in various types of stones and types of metals.

After a while, in addition to production, such power tools began to be used for domestic purposes. Special nozzles have been developed that allow grinding different surfaces.

When abrasive wheels were invented, the drill began to be used for cutting work. Typically, this function of the tool is used to cut pipes and metal bars. The latest models of drills have a fairly high power and speed of rotation of the drills. Equally important is the compactness of the devices.

With a wide variety of drills and attachments, drills can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, when using special nozzles, you can stir different mixtures. Some drills are equipped with an impact mechanism. Usually they are switched to this mode when working with concrete products or stone.

After a while, such tools were divided into professional and household. The former are distinguished by high reliability and long service life. They use rolling bearings. The parts of such devices are made of alloy steels, which were processed at high temperatures. To ensure reliable protection of the insides of such tools, their body is made of high-quality plastic, which is highly durable. Often, drills have the function of a hammer drill.

High-quality drills are made in a convenient form, which allows you to work with them as efficiently as possible. When using such devices, the worker's hand does not get tired, and all actions are performed as accurately as possible. Drills have another purpose - unscrewing self-tapping screws and screws. Such versatility often attracts home craftsmen. To understand the difference between a drill and a screwdriver, you need to look at the features of each of these tools.

Why you need a screwdriver

When drills began to be equipped with batteries, they were often used as screwdrivers. The possibility of autonomous use of devices of this type is very useful when performing work in confined spaces. You may need a screwdriver for the assembly of metal and wooden structures.

Such a tool has few external differences from a drill. However, its design is developed specifically for the effective tightening and unscrewing of screw screws, screws and self-tapping screws. There are models of screwdrivers that can be used when drilling various holes. Screwdrivers are designed to lighten the torque. When working with screw connections, a high rotational speed is not required.

For this purpose, a special device is placed in the device - a gearbox. It allows you to reduce the speed to 300 per minute. At the same time, the torque is increased at the same time. The screw does not deform.

To prevent the device from jamming, a special system with several speeds is installed in it, which eliminates overloads. The screwdriver can be equipped with special nozzles that allow you to twist and unscrew various fasteners. A screwdriver with an impact function is able to tighten nuts and screws using strong impacts.

Important! The presence of a special disengaging clutch allows you to create a screwing force. Thanks to this detail, the chuck stops automatically during reloading.

When using batteries that are combined with the handle, the screwdriver is much more convenient to use. Such tools have become quite common in the construction industry. Similar devices are also used for assembly work, when repairing cars.

The difference between a screwdriver and a drill

Drills and screwdrivers are excellent for performing the functions for which they were specifically designed. When using a drill, you can accurately and quickly make a hole in a certain material. When using a screwdriver, you can quickly tighten or unscrew nuts, screws, screws.

The differences between these tools are obvious:

All these differences indicate the need to use certain devices exclusively for the tasks for which they were created. A drill driver is the most common device among ordinary users. Its versatility and simplicity attract home craftsmen.

conclusions

Screwdrivers, like drills with screwdriver functions, can be powered from the mains or from the built-in battery. The advantages and disadvantages of devices depend on the tasks to be performed. Corded tools take no time to charge, and cordless tools can work anywhere.

If you need to choose a quality construction tool, you should understand the features of the operation of specific models. The market offers a wide variety of both drills and screwdrivers. If the appliance is needed for domestic work, it may not have high power or additional functions. You can purchase a universal device, but it will not be able to work continuously for a long time and will be limited in capabilities.

Professional devices are equipped with a capacious battery and have many functions. If specific construction tasks need to be performed frequently, it is better to pay attention to a device with certain technical data.

The most important tool parameters are torque and speed. For domestic use, a screwdriver is perfect, the maximum torque of which is 10-15 Nm. This allows you to easily tighten even the tightest screws. High torque tools are versatile as they can also drill through hard materials.

For professional expensive screwdrivers, the maximum torque can reach up to 130 Nm.

The choice of rotational speed depends on the tasks that the tool will solve. To tighten the screws, a parameter of 400-500 rpm will be enough. For drilling, you need a rotational speed of at least 1200-1300 rpm. A higher frequency is needed only in exceptional cases.

Also, when choosing a screwdriver, you should pay attention to the gearbox, which ensures the rotation of its working shaft at a given angular velocity. For twisting, 50 rpm is enough, for drilling - from 1200 to 1500 rpm. Cordless screwdrivers are most often equipped with a planetary gear with plastic satellite gears.

Professional or household

If you are in doubt which screwdriver to choose - household or professional, pay attention to the power and continuous operation time before recharging. Both indicators for a household screwdriver are much less, but in everyday life such a tool will cope with all tasks. A household battery is usually equipped with a nickel-cadmium battery, which lasts for 1000 charges.

The cost of household screwdrivers also differs significantly from expensive professional tools, which are advisable to buy exclusively for heavy loads.

It is advisable to choose professional cordless screwdrivers with lithium-ion batteries that do not suffer from the “memory effect” and do not contain harmful cadmium. Their only drawback is poor resistance to sub-zero temperatures. You can also purchase a household or professional cordless screwdriver. Such tools weigh more and are limited by the length of the cord. It is advisable to choose them for large volumes of work associated with the processing of hard materials. In addition, when buying a screwdriver, give preference not to a pistol grip, but to a handle located at its center of gravity. Better yet, read
