How to properly install vinyl siding on a house. Covering a house with siding: selection and calculation of materials, work technology, errors, nuances

In a private home there is always something to repair, for this reason it is better to have your own tool. If you don’t have the tool, you can buy it before finishing the house with siding. Believe me, it will not gather dust idle after laying the siding with your own hands is finished. So, to carry out the work you will need to purchase:

  • A screwdriver is the main tool, which is simply impossible to do without, since it is with the help of it that most work is carried out. For example, the self-tapping screws for fastening metal hangers are tightened, the profiles and the siding panels themselves are attached;
  • The building level is necessary for leveling frame elements and siding panels. Can be used as usual building level, and more expensive - laser;

Tip: when working with a metal siding frame, it is convenient to use a regular building level, which is additionally equipped with magnets. Using magnets, the level can be installed on the profile and not held, this greatly facilitates the work of leveling the subsystem.

  • Drill with impact drilling function or hammer drill. The tool is necessary if you plan to decorate with siding a house whose walls are made of brick or concrete. Additionally, you will need to have a drill or drill, the diameter of which will correspond to the diameter of the dowels used;
  • Metal scissors. The tool is simply necessary, because when assembling the frame, you will need to trim the metal profile, and this cannot be done without scissors;
  • Roulette. To carry out siding installation work, it is convenient to use a tape measure with a magnetic tip;
  • Angle grinder (Bulgarian). Convenient to use for pruning metal profile, as well as siding, regardless of what material it is made of;
  • Construction stapler and staples, for installation vapor barrier material;
  • Stationery or any other sharp knife, for cutting insulation and vapor barrier;
  • Stepladder or ladder for access to the upper part of the facade;
  • You will also need an axe, hammer and nail puller. When decorating a house yourself, there is always something to pull out, knock on, and trim.

Advice: to facilitate installation in the upper part of the facade, special scaffolding. If the height of the house is more than one floor, such scaffolding can be built up, thereby providing access to the highest point.

Work algorithm

Next, let's move on to studying how to install metal siding with your own hands. The instructions for dummies include the following sequence for covering a house with siding with your own hands:

  1. Calculation of the required amount of materials;
  2. Preparatory work;
  3. Installation of vapor barrier;
  4. Installation of insulation;
  5. Marking for subsequent installation of the frame;
  6. Subsystem installation;
  7. Siding installation;
  8. Installation of additional elements.

Material calculation

To carry out the installation of siding panels, it is necessary to calculate in advance the required amount of materials. To do this, you need to measure the length and height of all walls that need finishing, and then calculate their area.

Tip: to calculate the required amount of materials, only the clean area of the walls is used. To determine it, it is necessary to subtract the total area of all windows from the rough area.

To determine the required amount of metal profile in linear meters, you need to multiply the net area of the walls by a factor of 2.2. The resulting result can be divided by 3, thus finding out the number of pieces of the profile.

To install each profile, six metal hangers are required, thus, by multiplying the number of profiles by six, you can find out the exact number of hangers.

It is not difficult to calculate the required number of screws or dowel nails for attaching hangers. You will need two of them per suspension, so you need to multiply the number of suspensions by 2 and get the required number.

Insulation, for sale cubic meters, respectively, multiplying the net area of the walls for finishing with siding by the thickness of the insulation, you can find out the volume of material that will be needed for the work.

The siding itself for finishing a house is calculated quite simply, since you can calculate the area of one siding panel, then divide the net area by the area of one panel and find out required quantity.

Self-tapping screws for assembling the frame and fastening the panels are calculated based on the clean area that needs finishing. For each square meter area, you will need 50 screws.

After everything has been done and the material has been purchased, you can begin installing the metal siding yourself. Step by step instructions advises starting work from the preparatory stage.

Preparatory work

Advice: If work is carried out in a new house that does not yet have window trim, preparatory stage You can check the integrity of the window sealing material and, if necessary, foam the defective areas using polyurethane foam.

The preparatory stage includes the following work:

  • Dismantling of window sills and slopes;
  • Removal drain pipes and their fastenings;
  • If there are lighting fixtures on the walls, they also need to be dismantled, and after work on siding the house, the lanterns will be mounted back on the wall. Work on removing and moving lighting lamps must be carried out in compliance with safety precautions. The best option is to entrust such work to a professional electrician;
  • Inspecting walls for defects and eliminating them. Seal cracks using polyurethane foam; if the house is wooden, you can treat them with an antiseptic solution, which will prevent corrosion of the material and additionally protect against negative impact moisture.

Installation of vapor barrier and insulation

After preparatory work Before assembling the frame, it is necessary to install a vapor barrier and insulation.

Important: if polyurethane foam is used for insulation, then there is no need to install a vapor barrier and you can immediately begin marking and installing hangers. Work on the insulation of the facade can be carried out both after the frame is installed and before its assembly, and after the frame has already been assembled.

The vapor barrier is fixed vertically with an overlap of 10–15 cm. If the walls of the house are wooden, then the work is carried out using construction stapler, otherwise for fastening you will need additional dowels, with washers placed under the screw head.

After installing the vapor barrier, thermal insulation is laid and secured using dowels for insulating materials. At this stage there is no need to secure the insulation to the large number dowels, since in the future it will be securely fixed using hangers for the metal profile installed on top of it.

Marking

When marking, you need to remember the basic rules for installing the frame; adhering to them, you will not be able to make mistakes when installing the frame. The basic rules for installing a subsystem include the following mandatory requirements:

  1. The frame must be installed in such a way that the distance between the nearest profiles does not exceed sixty centimeters;
  2. At the corners of the walls, at a distance of no more than 10 cm from them, a profile must be installed without fail;
  3. If you plan to install vinyl or acrylic siding, then it is necessary to make special corner jumpers on which the corner strip will be attached in the future;
  4. Profiles must be installed on all sides of windows and doors;
  5. The pitch of the hangers holding each of the profiles should be no more than sixty centimeters.

Frame assembly

Work on assembling the frame begins with the installation of the outer profiles. They must be secured strictly vertically. The location is controlled using a level. Next, between the outer profiles, for ease of installation of the remaining frame elements, you can stretch several rows of construction cords. As a rule, three rows are made (at the very bottom, in the center and at the top).

After the frame is assembled, you can check its correct installation using metal rule or profile. To do this, you need to press the rule to the frame, grabbing at least three profiles. If the rule is pressed tightly against all three elements of the system, it means that the assembly was carried out correctly, otherwise, when curvature is observed and the rule is not pressed tightly, it is necessary to carry out work to eliminate the causes of this phenomenon.

Installation of metal siding panels

Metal siding, unlike its plastic counterparts, has sufficient rigidity and can be installed without additional elements. For example, such as corner or near window trims.

You need to start work on attaching the siding to the frame from the bottom and gradually work your way up. To attach the first strip of siding, you can use a starting strip, which must be leveled horizontally and firmly attached to the frame using 13mm psh-tapping screws.

If desired, you can do without the starting one; in this case, the siding strip is immediately leveled and attached. To prevent the lower part of the siding from dangling, it is secured to the profile with self-tapping screws.

Important: when attaching metal siding without an additional starting strip, the bottom row of screws holding the strip of siding will be visible. If this is unacceptable, you must use a starting strip for installation.

The length of one strip of siding is six meters. In the event that this is not enough to cover the entire width of the wall, a special connecting profile is used to connect the siding strips. It is installed strictly vertically, in the place where the siding panels are planned to be joined. To install a connecting profile in a place where there is no frame element, you can make horizontal jumpers between two adjacent profiles. The distance between jumpers should not exceed 0.6 m.

After the first strip has been installed and its horizontal position has been checked, the next strip can be installed. To do this, the technological bend on it is installed in the groove of the already mounted strip, after which it is secured in the upper part. The siding is fastened using PSh self-tapping screws, no more than 13 mm long.

Advice: although the preparatory work and installation of the frame can be done alone, then it is not so easy to cope with the installation of six-meter strips of siding alone. It is much more convenient to carry out installation with an assistant.

Fastening plastic strips of siding

Unlike metal siding, plastic version does not have sufficient rigidity and for this reason must be installed in compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and together with additional structural elements. Therefore, installation work plastic siding begin with the installation of corner and, if necessary, connecting strips. All recommendations for correct installation siding can be found on the product packaging. But especially important points, we'll still look into it. The first point is the need to maintain gaps that compensate for the thermal linear expansion of the product. The gap should be at least 0.5 mm and no more than 1 cm.

The second point is that plastic siding, unlike metal siding, must be secured in such a way that installed panel could be freely moved to the left or right, to the distance provided by the technological perforation. To achieve this result, when attaching plastic panels siding, the fastening screws should be installed approximately in the middle of the perforation and not tightened to the end.

By observing these simple rules installation, you can be confident in the quality of the final result.

Below you can watch a video description of how to install siding with your own hands; the video shows step by step the entire process of finishing the facade; in fact, these are instructions for installing siding, with a step-by-step process discussed in video format.

Conclusion

Above, we familiarized ourselves with how to install siding with our own hands. The described step-by-step instructions are quite detailed, but still do not include all the necessary information. Siding installation work is not difficult if you follow the instructions. The main thing when installing plastic siding is to maintain the gaps and install the fastening screws so that the siding panel can move freely to the distance provided for by the mounting perforations.

The siding installation diagram may differ depending on the material from which it is made. Sheathing a house with metal siding is a little easier for a novice craftsman than studying the instructions for installing plastic siding and carrying out the work, observing the required order and technical recommendations the manufacturer of this material.

The main difficulties when carrying out facing work using siding are surface preparation and fastening of the facing material.

In fact, even an untrained person can easily handle fastening and installation.

Of course, you can’t do this without knowledge of technology, so in this material we’ll look in detail at how to fix vinyl siding and what it will take.

Siding is used for exterior finishing walls of residential buildings and industrial buildings. In addition to the attractive appearance, this cladding has excellent functional properties such as durability, resistance to temperatures and moisture.

If you need to update the appearance of the facade or disguise its shortcomings, siding will be a suitable solution.

If the technology is followed, the surface of the walls will be reliably protected from moisture

This finish is perfect for regions with a relatively aggressive climate, such as in Russia. Material tests were carried out in laboratory conditions, the material has proven its strength in practice - after all, it has been mass-produced for several years.

In terms of maintenance, the material is quite unpretentious - during operation you do not have to do painting work every year or impregnate the material with special liquids. The vinyl surface can be simply washed with a stream of water from a hose or a damp cloth.

Selecting the required size

To begin with, you should purchase the material desired color and size. Six-meter panels are usually used for cladding facades - after them there is much less waste, since such a panel is easy to divide into products required sizes. Price plays a significant role when choosing siding. One square meter costs from 180 to 200 rubles.

Today the range of textures and color options varies over a very wide range. The main manufacturers have in their assortment both single-color panels and textured panels that imitate wood, stone or brick.

How to calculate the amount of material

After choosing the right color and texture of the material, you will need what is needed to cover the building. To do this, it is convenient to use a diagram of the walls of the house - you can draw it yourself, you do not have to comply with any standards for this. Measure the lengths and heights of all walls, and calculate their areas using the formula S = a x b, where a is length, b is height.

When making calculations you can use these formulas

Next, you should add up all the resulting areas - this way you will find out how much material you need to purchase for finishing the walls. Yes, it is important not to forget to subtract the area of doors and doors from the total area of the walls. window openings– you won’t have to cover them with siding.

Since this cladding usually covers the entire house, including the pediment, its area must also be measured. To do this, you need to measure the length of the base and the height of the triangle from the middle of the base to the top apex. The area of a triangle is calculated using the formula S = ½ x a x h (half the length of the base times the height).

Adding the areas of rectangular walls and triangular pediments will give you total area, which will be finished with siding. After all the calculations have been made, you can buy the most accurate amount of material, thus minimizing costs.

Where to start attaching siding

Before you begin the main work of installing and fastening the cladding, you should prepare the following tools:

Before attaching the panels, you should also clear the walls of weeds and plants, remove all decorations from the walls, remove lanterns and drainpipes. If there are any other structures on the facade that may interfere with installation, they should be removed as well.

If there are rotten boards on the walls, you need to replace them with new ones, and treat undamaged wood with an antiseptic. Despite the fact that all the shortcomings will be hidden by the finishing, it is still better to eliminate the possibility of further destruction of the wood.

Shutters, window sills, and protruding structures around windows and doors also need to be removed. Once the walls on the outside of the house are clean, you can check them for verticality using a level.

Installation of sheathing

Lathing made of wooden blocks

If the deviations of the walls from the vertical are less than 1 cm, and the walls themselves are in perfect condition, you don’t have to do lathing. For old buildings, most likely the walls have already deformed and it is impossible to do without lathing. So, to start installing the sheathing, you need to prepare the tools and install the scaffolding.

The sheathing can be made from slats and boards. The slats are attached to the walls with 10 cm nails. They are nailed at distances of 30-40 cm from each other. Before you start nailing boards and battens over all surfaces, you should nail a few starting ones at the corners of the walls, as well as around door and window openings. Insulation boards are laid between the sheathing slats. This can be polystyrene foam or mineral wool.

When installing metal frame you can use these parameters

In the case of using metal, the siding profile is secured with galvanized screws to pre-installed brackets.

The siding will be secured with nails or self-tapping screws. In any case, the fasteners must be coated with an anti-corrosion coating. It is more convenient to fasten the siding with self-tapping screws using an automatic screwdriver with reverse. Simply tightening self-tapping screws in a semi-automatic mode is much easier than driving nails.

The presence of a reverse screwdriver will allow you to quickly create temperature gaps - just unscrew each screw one turn so that the panels do not deform under the influence of thermal expansion.

Fastening vinyl panels

To secure the starting line, you need:

In addition to installing horizontal panels, you need to somehow trim the windows and corners. There are special accessories for this.

Installation of corners will give the facade a finished look and, what is much more important, will protect the house from moisture from the outside getting under the siding. The peculiarity of fastening the corner elements is such that they should overlap the horizontal siding by 1 cm. Again, the structures should not be adjacent to each other, you need to leave short distance between them.

The fastening of the horizontal panels ends with the installation of the finishing strip - it has a decorative edge, as a result of which the siding takes on a beautifully outlined appearance.

Next, the soffit is attached - there is no need to skimp on this element, since it has an important functional feature. The holes in it are needed for air circulation and ventilation of the facade. Without good ventilation, moisture will begin to stagnate between the siding and the walls.

After familiarizing yourself with the technology, all that remains is to carry out all the actions described in the article. As you can see, all difficulties arise immediately before the siding itself is attached.

Installing panels is reminiscent of assembling a constructor and when performing consistent actions– will not pose any special problems. If the technology described above is not entirely clear, we suggest watching a video on how to properly attach siding:

Today we will look in detail at how to install siding correctly. After all, this is perhaps the most common finishing material today.

The rules for installing siding are not so complicated; here it will be important to simply follow everything according to certain rules. The video in this article will also help with this.

Siding installation

Do-it-yourself installation of exterior siding is done quite often today. After all, by doing this work yourself, the price of the entire structure will be much cheaper.

Before doing the cladding, you need to decide on some design details. Not only the appearance, but also the materials will depend on this.

Attention: You should not buy material back to back. You should take 20% more. After all, you will have waste and this must be taken into account.

Tools and materials

But in order to install siding, you must prepare in advance necessary tools and materials.

  • The main tools are considered to be: a hammer drill, metal scissors, a screwdriver, etc. In any case, the tools and materials needed for the job can be easily purchased.
  • You also need to think about how you will make the fastening. After all, you will need to move freely. Just on ladder it won't work. Scaffolding is best suited for the job. Then you will be able to move freely.

Preparatory work and installation of lathing

Now let’s directly figure out how to install siding correctly. Starting to think about carrying out certain finishing works, you should know that the surface must be carefully prepared, and the success of the work as a whole will depend on this.

So:

  • The walls of the building must be cleared of branches, various designs drainage systems, etc. Try to devote a lot of time and attention to the preparatory work, this is the only way to do everything right.
  • If the surface of the house was covered with clapboard, then know that you must make sure that all elements are securely fastened, because this is so important.
  • Speaking about this or that decorative elements, platbands, you need to understand that they need to be removed from the surface of the wall.
  • You also need to eliminate all defects in window openings.

Attention: In general, you need to understand that the process of finishing the facade of a house with such material as siding is painstaking and complex, which means that you must take into account important tips specialists.

  • If you are going to install such material on uneven walls, then know that they are capable of repeating their unevenness; after a while, they will crack, which means take this into account in advance.
  • Be sure to mark the bottom fastening line. A water level is used for this. Then this parameter will be correctly marked. After all, subsequent panels will start from this size.
  • Even if the walls are perfectly smooth, you must install it without fail, doing it efficiently and correctly, do not forget about this under any circumstances. After all, it is the sheathing that can create a small ventilation gap between the cladding and the wall, and this leads to a significant increase in sound and thermal insulation of the house.

It doesn’t matter what material the sheathing will be made of, because it can be either metal or wood, you decide for yourself which material is perfect for you.

  • Installation of starting and auxiliary siding elements. First of all, you need to install a starting strip along the contour of the building, and you must be careful and careful and use a measuring tool when making fastenings.
  • You need to install vinyl corners in the corners of the house; they, in turn, can create a beautiful and original joint. When starting to mount the corner, you should try to do it in such a way that from above it cannot reach the overhang of the cornice.
  • After attaching the contour sheathing, we attach it in the middle. Here the slats are attached at a distance according to the width of the insulation. Just remember that the insulation mats (see) should not be deformed, because it will then lose its properties.
  • The river is secured using a dowel or an anchor. To do this, first a hole is made in the hay and after that the connection is made. Here you need to pay attention to the rigidity of the connection. It must be reliable.

How to attach panels to sheathing

You do the work with your own hands and therefore everything must be done efficiently.

Before starting work, you should look at the photo and think through everything. In general, there are two types of fastening such material as siding to the sheathing, which means you need to choose the most optimal and best fastening option for yourself.

  • You can use N-rails, or you can not use them at all. If you choose the first option for attaching siding, then know that the edges of the panels must be joined by inserting them into grooves.
  • In general, both mounting methods are excellent for big houses, since the length of one element is often not enough to cover the entire area of the facade. It is for this reason that you must consider such important nuances and features, because the result will please you.

Attention: Often inexperienced owners begin to trim all siding panels, in fact, this is wrong, and you should not rush anywhere, so take this into account. All you need to do is shorten the elements if such a need arises, because in this case you can avoid unnecessary expenses, and this is the most important thing.

  • If you need to install panels in openings, then you should not attach the J-profile in its upper part. When starting to start the panel, you must bend it, this is done without any problems and with great ease, so you can definitely handle it.
  • Fastening is done only in the holes intended for this purpose. The connection is made in the middle.
  • You should never clamp the panel when attaching it. Make a gap of a couple of mm, then the material will not deform when the temperature changes.
  • As soon as the panel is installed, the profile strip must be secured, again, trying to fasten it correctly and securely.
  • As soon as you start attaching the siding, you must already select the elements that will be used to attach the material. As a rule, experts recommend using short self-tapping screws that will have a small rounded head.
  • You can purchase such products without any problems at any hardware store, after which you will be sure that they are truly reliable, practical and effective, which means you will be able to attach the material without any problems.

Attention: The panel can be fixed to the wall only when its lock is latched with the previous element. That is why it is so important not to rush anywhere, trying to complete each stage of the work carefully, accurately and thoroughly, then the effect will please you.

  • When starting to fasten, you must also take into account the fact that you do not need to press and pull, because this can negatively affect the cladding as a whole, which means you must take this into account.

Conclusion

Now you yourself understand that having mastered this work, you can do it without special labor, finish the balcony with such material as siding, which means that now this room will look dignified, attractive, respectable and cozy, which is what every owner actually dreams of.

If you need to drill holes in the material, then know that their diameter must be wider than necessary; five millimeters is usually enough. This is done so that unhindered compression and expansion of the cladding parts can be carried out. So, be sure to take into account the advice of experts.

Siding is one of the varieties building materials for wall cladding. With its help you can low cost completely change the appearance of a private house, if the house is still good, but already quite old. In addition, finishing and siding are used for the outside.

Layed on top of the insulation, it not only hides it, but also improves the entire exterior of the house. It is for this reason that many home owners decide to make such changes to the appearance of their home. Step-by-step instructions will help you do all the work correctly. self-cladding houses with siding.

A little history

This type of cladding was invented by our Pomors. For hunting, durable, light vessels were needed. It was in shipbuilding that this type of ship plating was used. Actually, the word siding itself is translated as plank. Northern peoples adopted this technology to insulate their houses, lining their houses with planks. In addition to insulation, this technology made it possible to speed up the construction of houses on the northern coast, and was very popular among Russian pioneers.

Nowadays, siding is made from modern building materials:

  • Vinyl;
  • Metal;
  • Cement (fiber cement siding);
  • Tree.

Various types of siding allow you to completely change the appearance of a private home without significant financial costs.

Preparation for sheathing

Preparatory work for covering a house with siding is not very difficult. The entire building will need to be carefully inspected and several measurements taken. If sagging of masonry mortar is visible, you just need to knock them down. Either drive the protruding nails back or remove them altogether. If possible, small protrusions more than 6 mm in height should also be eliminated.

Inspection

When inspecting the house, it is also necessary to identify unevenness of the walls, base, corners, window openings and other architectural elements- in general, wherever siding work is planned. It is better to carry out such measurements using a long reference metal slats, cord and tape measure. Deviation from the plane is permissible no more than 12 mm. In local places – no more than 6 mm.

Simply put, if the entire wall is not rectangular, but diamond-shaped, then the difference in diagonals should be no more than 12 mm. The same option, but for a window or door – 6 mm.

The general unevenness of the entire wall (pediment, cornice, plinth) should not exceed 12 mm.
Over time, the building may sag on one side and tilt. The inclination of a wall or the entire building is checked using a plumb line. Deviation from the vertical is allowed no more than 25 mm. If the slope of the entire building is greater than permissible, then it is already in a pre-emergency condition. If it is not eliminated, then further work on siding is simply pointless.

Preparatory work

After checking the geometry of the building, a set of preparatory work is required. Platbands, drains, grates, etc. are removed. If there are cracks in the walls, near windows and doorways– seal either with polyurethane foam or simply with cement mortar. If you find: broken plaster, peeling paint, areas covered with mold - thoroughly clean such areas. Treat wooden walls with any antiseptic.

Tools and materials

Before starting work on siding your house, make sure you have a full set of available tools:

  • Electric screwdriver and screwdriver;
  • Hammer;
  • Roulettes (laser tapes are easier and more convenient to work with);
  • Construction level;
  • Stairs.

How to cut boards

When cladding a building, part of the finishing panels is used entirely. But in some places you will have to make extensions from the same material. Depending on what material will be used for cladding and siding, the tool for cutting the panels is also selected.

For vinyl

  • Electric jigsaw with fine-toothed blade;
  • Bulgarian;
  • Sharp Cutter;
  • Universal;
  • Hacksaw for metal;
  • Shoe knife.

Metal siding

  • hacksaw for metal;
  • metal scissors;
  • electric circular saw with pobedit teeth.

Advice! The use of an angle grinder (grinder) is accompanied by heating of the metal siding at the cut site, damaging the protective top layer.

Material

If you want to do all the cladding work yourself, in order to purchase all required material you can just contact a large hardware store. The seller simply needs to describe in detail the area of the walls, the number of windows and doors, etc., and he will calculate and select the necessary set of materials for the job.

And in order to control the quality of the product, you need to know what characteristics the material for covering a house with siding must meet:

  1. Same thickness throughout the entire panel.
  2. Mandatory presence of special markings on inside panels. This marking carries all necessary information by material: color, batch number, release date. If there was not enough material for covering during the work process, you can always purchase more, focusing on this marking.
  3. On quality panels There is a hurricane lock. It is made in the form of a bend on top of the panel and is located above the holes for fasteners.
  4. A sure sign that a company cares about its image is the presence of additional elements and accessories included with the materials.
  5. All products must be provided with certificates and warranties. The minimum warranty period for coverage must be 50 years.
  6. Responsible sellers will be sure to include siding installation instructions with the purchased product.

Installation of sheathing

First, markings are made. Straight lines are drawn on the walls of the house so as to create a closed contour. To make the line horizontal, a horizontal level helps. At the corners of the house from the horizontal line, it is necessary to take measurements with a tape measure to determine the minimum distance to the base. When the minimum distance is set at this level, the string for the contour is pulled. The starting bar will be mounted on it.

The next stage is the installation of elements of vertical metal guides from the installation horizon, starting from the corners. The distance between the vertical slats is 35-45 cm. Additional guides are made near windows and doors. The main condition is that they should not intersect anywhere.

This is necessary to ensure that air constantly circulates under the siding, preventing the formation of mold.
For walls made of brick and concrete, the guides are made from a special profile. For log walls slats with a cross section of 60x40 mm are used, treated with an antiseptic solution.

Waterproofing and insulation

If the sheathing is installed on wooden and aerated concrete walls, installation of waterproofing is required.

Insulation of walls with mini-slabs is carried out at the request of the house owner, but a moisture-and-windproof membrane must be installed in any case. If there is no insulation, the film is attached to the wall of the house. If there is a layer of insulation, a layer of waterproofing is attached on top of it. Since a gap for ventilation between the insulation panels and the siding is required, a sheathing is constructed on top of the insulation layer.

Guides

Now that the insulation is in place and the sheathing is ready, it’s time to install siding accessories, such as:

  • external and internal elements at the corners of the structure;
  • strips for window and door openings;
  • ebbs on the base of the building and windows.

The basement drainage is fixed at the intended level under the lower siding strip so that the upper edge runs along the line. Corner elements are attached rigidly to self-tapping screws at the very top of the outer hole. The subsequent screws are screwed into the middle of the slot in increments of 50 cm.

Advice! If the profile is not enough, it can be built up with another one, overlapping with the previous one with an overlap of five centimeters.

Window framing begins with the installation of the ebb. It protrudes beyond the window opening by 8-10 cm on both sides. The side window strips are installed on this protrusion. From below, the ebb is held in place by a j-profile. After installing the siding, the window design is completed by installing the trim.

The process of edging a doorway is almost identical to that of a window.

Installation of panels

The process of installing siding panels is somewhat similar to LEGO designer. Each element is connected to the other in turn. The first row from the bottom is attached to the first (starting) bar with light pressure until a click appears from below. At the top, through the slots, they are fastened with self-tapping screws in the center, so that the siding moves into them without visible effort. Fastening is carried out from the center to the edges of the building, in increments of 40 cm.

All subsequent panels are attached in the same way, rising from the foundation to the roof. The topmost row ends with a finishing strip.

Basic installation rules

  1. Be sure to avoid rigid fastening of siding panels. It should be remembered that the material itself has the property of shrinking in the cold and expanding in the summer. Therefore, the screw is screwed into the center of the hole so that there is a gap of 1 mm between the screw head and the plate.
  2. Maintain a 10 mm gap between the slats and the guides. This will prevent the siding from being damaged when it expands in hot weather.
  3. Facing a house with siding can be done in any weather, but it should be taken into account that in frost the material becomes brittle and therefore requires more careful handling during installation.

I have the following problem. House old building, and just needs to be insulated corner room, in winter it’s cold, damp and mold grows on the walls. There is not enough money to cover the entire house, so we decided to start from this place. This is an extension, and not made very well. Deviation from the plane is about 20 mm. So far we have decided that horizontal cladding will show all the shortcomings, and vertical cladding will hide it, but we doubt whether this is so.

The question arose before winter of covering the house with siding. Since I am not a builder myself, I encountered this for the first time. I read a bunch of different tips, websites that tell you what to do and how to do it. But I haven’t been able to find anyone who can put it all in concrete terms. I came across this article. I read and understood everything very carefully. What, how to do and what will be needed. As a result, I bought metal siding beige color and got to work. Since I was on vacation, my friend and I did everything quickly. It’s good that the house is recently built, so all the corners and walls are even. There were practically no difficulties. The result is a satisfied wife and beautiful house. Thanks for the article, it turned out to be very useful.

Any owner of a private house certainly wants his home to have an attractive appearance. What to do in order to change its appearance in better side? What material would be most suitable for this? Solving these problems today is quite easy.

To do this, you just need to use modern building material - siding. It is quite affordable and has a number of advantages. In addition, you can install the siding yourself. Such work will not require special skills and knowledge.

Innovative material

The word "siding" means a material intended for covering various surfaces. At the same time, its main functions are aesthetic and protective. Once upon a time, an ordinary board was used for this, which was processed accordingly. And only much later panels appeared on the construction market, which we call siding. They began to be produced from a variety of materials.

Siding has gained immense popularity due to its strength and lightness, durability and attractive appearance. But that's not all. Such panels are very comfortable material for fastening. And this sometimes acts as a determining factor for those who study the question of how to install siding in order to do the work themselves.

Typically, all panels, regardless of the raw materials from which they are made, have certain dimensions. Their length reaches 6 m, their width ranges from 10 to 30 cm, and their thickness is 1-10 cm. Dimensions different from these can only be provided by a company that has small production. Sometimes panels are made to order. However, in this case their cost will be slightly higher.

The profile of siding panels can be made in two versions. This is a “ship plank” or “herringbone”. They provide, respectively, a double or single fracture. But for installation this does not matter.

All siding panels are covered with a protective layer, made either by painting or by applying a polymer film.

A huge advantage of this material is its excellent performance qualities, as well as maintainability. After the owner finishes the house with these panels, he can forever forget about impregnating the wood with special compounds, tinting the facade and other similar work. And to eliminate damage in the most short terms It is enough to simply replace 1-2 products, which does not require any preparatory measures.

Siding classification

There are some types of panels designed for finishing individual buildings. This is the following siding:

  1. Wooden. In my own way appearance it looks more like traditional clapboard. That’s what they call it – “laminated lining”.
  2. Vinyl. This siding is the most popular among owners of individual houses and at the same time the cheapest. It is made from polyvinyl chloride or acrylic. Such panels imitate brick, wood or natural stone. Those who have decided to change the appearance of their home should keep in mind that vinyl panels are easily damaged by strong negative temperatures. How to install this type of siding? The peculiarity of finishing with vinyl panels is that working with them is possible only in fairly warm weather. In addition, due to the fact that vinyl siding does not reduce heat loss, the enclosed surface will require insulation.
  3. Aluminum. This siding is characterized by its low weight and increased resistance to negative influence liquid media It is perfect for covering large areas. In this regard, it can also be used for high-rise buildings.
  4. Metal. This type of siding is so-called galvanized. Protective layer Polyester, pural or powder coating are used for it.
  5. Cement. This building material contains cement mixed with cellulose. To install it, you will need a fairly strong structure, since such siding is heavy.
  6. Ceramic. This is one of the new types of panels designed for cladding buildings. Experts believe ceramic siding the best option among similar building materials in the average price range.
  7. Basement. This type of panels is used to finish the lower part of the building. Such products are quite durable. After all, it is the basement of the house that is most susceptible to temperature changes, when in the summer it is heated by the blind area, and in the winter it is cooled by the soil and snow.

Tools

How to install siding yourself? Step-by-step instructions that will help the owner in these works, in the first paragraph indicate the need to check the availability of the following tools:

  • grinders or saws with fine teeth;
  • metal scissors;
  • screwdriver and screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • roulette;
  • square;
  • level (you can take a laser tape measure, which will greatly simplify the work);
  • stepladders that will allow you to reach the roof of the building.

Materials

Siding manufacturers offer a full range of panels and elements with which you can sheathe a house with even a complex configuration. The buyer, as a rule, indicates only the area of the walls of the house, their dimensions, type of roof, and the number of windows. The information obtained allows the seller to calculate the required number of necessary elements.

What are the components needed to install siding?

  1. Outer corner. It is used both for decorative purposes and to cover the ends of siding.
  2. Inner corner. They are used in areas where the siding joins the wall.
  3. Wind board and soffits. They are installed when finishing the cornice.
  4. Starting bar. Its length is calculated based on the perimeter of the house minus the width of the doors and gables.
  5. L-profile. It is necessary in areas where there is a difference in roofs or heights, as well as where extensions are connected.
  6. Window slat. It covers the perimeter of the windows.
  7. Low tides. They are also used to frame windows.
  8. Drains or drain strip. These elements are installed around the perimeter of the base.
  9. The siding panels themselves.
  10. Galvanized screws (25-35 mm) or nails, which will be used for installation.

Preparatory work

What do you need to do to install siding yourself? The step-by-step instructions introduce us to these steps and indicate that some preparation will be required directly on the job site. First of all, you will need to dismantle all protruding elements of the building. These can be grilles and trims, doors. Next, you will need to seal all existing cracks in the walls, around windows, etc. To do this, you can take polyurethane foam or cement mortar. If the house is old, then its walls must be cleaned of dust and dirt, mold and paint, chipped plaster, and rotten areas. Wooden houses at the preparatory stage of installation they are treated with antipyretics and antiseptics. Walls made of foam concrete are coated using a deep penetration primer.

Lathing material

It is worth keeping in mind that the siding itself is not attached directly to the walls. That is why at the first stage of installation you will need to build a sheathing. This is a special frame on which the panels will be attached. Installation of siding without sheathing is possible only if the walls of the house are wooden and at the same time have a perfectly flat and smooth surface. If the wall of the house is poorly leveled, which usually happens, then you will need to build a sheathing from wooden slats or metal profile. This will be the basis for the cladding panels.

How to install metal siding? The only option for this type of panel is a galvanized profile. It is also used for concrete and brick walls. A CD profile designed for drywall can be used as such a material.

How to install vinyl siding? For this type of panels used for wood or frame house, it is necessary to prepare a sheathing of slats measuring 60 x 40 mm, the residual moisture of which is in the range of 15-20%. They must first not only be dried, but also treated with an antiseptic.

Frame arrangement

To install the sheathing, you will need to draw straight lines on the walls of the house, thus obtaining a closed contour. To ensure that they are horizontal and even, a level and tape measure are used. After this, the distances in the corners of the house to the base are measured from this line and, having found the smallest of them, a second contour is drawn. It is along the bottom line that the starting bar will subsequently pass.

At the next stage, the vertical components of the sheathing are installed. This work must be started from the corners. It is worth keeping in mind that the sheathing must fit snugly against the walls of the house, for which purpose pieces of dense foam or wood are sometimes placed under it.

Insulation and waterproofing

How to install siding? If the panels are installed on aerated concrete or wooden walls, then a mandatory stage of work will be the installation of waterproofing. Insulation can be laid at the request of the owner.

The most popular waterproofing material recently is a water-and-windproof membrane. If the walls are not insulated, then the film will need to be fixed directly to the facade of the house. This will save the space needed for siding ventilation. If an insulating layer is installed, then waterproofing should be laid on top of it. Afterwards, a sheathing is constructed to provide a ventilation gap.

Installation of J-profiles

How to attach the starter siding strip? This guide piece must be installed perfectly level. The quality of the entire facing surface will subsequently depend on its correct horizontal position. How to properly install this strip? To do this, you should use step-by-step instructions:

  1. Take a level and find the lowest point on the sheathing. After this, stepping back 50 mm upward from it, put a mark, which will serve as a self-tapping screw slightly screwed into the rail.
  2. Consistently move around the building and continue placing the marks necessary to fix the starting strips. In addition, self-tapping screws must be screwed into the corners of the house.
  3. Moving further along the line, leave a 6 mm horizontal gap from the planned edge of the corner profiles.

After all this work has been carried out, the starting guide for the siding panels is fixed to the frame slats with self-tapping screws or nails.

Installation of a spillway

How to install siding? Work on paneling a house should begin with the installation of a drain. It is necessary to protect the base. The upper edge of the drain, which is a hinged strip, should be located along the previously marked lower line on the facade of the house. This design pretty tough. That is why its installation will not be difficult.

Installation of corner profiles

How to install vinyl siding? After completing the sheathing and installing the drain over the base, the turn of the corner profiles comes. They are rigidly fixed along a strictly vertical line. If you follow the instructions for installing siding, then the upper edge of the corner profile will need to be positioned 5-6 mm from the eaves. The lower one, on the contrary, should fall 7-8 mm from the established starting bar. Installation of siding corners, if one strip is not enough, is done with an overlap.

The fastening should be done in such a way that upper part floated onto the lower one. Corner profile fastened with nails or self-tapping screws at intervals of 20-40 centimeters.

Framing openings

Most inexperienced craftsmen find this stage of work the most difficult. However, to complete it, it is enough to carefully study the siding installation instructions.

J-profiles or window trims should be secured so that their outer bottom edge is slightly lower than the inner one. When framing doors, the corners of the elements are filed at an angle of 45 degrees or overlapped when the top planks are overlapped with the side ones.

Siding fastening

After carrying out all the above work, you can begin to directly cover the house with panels. It is worth keeping in mind that vinyl siding should only be attached to the special holes it has. It is not recommended to pierce the panel with nails and screws. Otherwise, the service life of the product will be significantly reduced.

The siding is attached to the wooden sheathing. Its first row must be attached to starting bar. You need to wait for the lock to click from below, and attach the panel to the top with self-tapping screws. All other rows are installed according to the same principle. After installation last panel it is necessary to attach the finishing strip to the sheathing.

Some owners, in order to give their home a more attractive look, decide to install basement siding on its facade.

How to install these panels? Such work is similar to that described above for building facades. The fasteners for siding are the same - nails or screws.
