We make honeycomb bookshelves ourselves. How to make honeycomb shelves

The technique used to create the shelf will be very useful if you need to connect more than 4 sides. The essence of this technique is to use adhesive tape to clamp the surfaces to be glued.

1. We will need:

  • The required amount of wood, for 6 hundred I used a piece of 1700 mm X 600 mm
  • Saw that can cut 30 degree angles
  • Wide adhesive tape
  • Furniture glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Putty (optional)
  • Paint any color
  • Primer for wood

2. Cutting

We decide on the sizes of future hexagons. I took 150 mm wide and 190 mm long, these dimensions of the hexagon face create a honeycomb with an approximate internal diameter of 390 mm. I advise you to take sizes smaller than mine.

We mark and saw off the edges (in my case it is 18 mm plywood), the sides can be immediately cut at an angle of 30 degrees.

3. Putty

I had pretty bad and rough plywood, so I had to putty it. I planned to paint only the inner walls, so I only putty internal surfaces. But you can paint both sides, or not paint at all, and just sand it well, it’s up to you. But if you decide to putty, then carefully apply a thin, even layer of putty to the wood with a wide spatula. If small unevenness has formed, it’s okay, the main thing is that there are no dimples, otherwise you will have to putty on the second layer. When we are finished, we wait for the putty to completely harden. Exact time should be written in the instructions attached to it.

4. Sanding

We thoroughly sand the putty surfaces, and at the same time we can go through all the others.

5. Priming

Apply a layer of primer. As soon as it has dried, take fine sandpaper and treat the surface. If necessary, repeat the process again until you get a nice smooth surface.

6. Painting

Paint the surfaces in 1-2 layers and wait for them to dry.

7. Gluing

Place all the pieces of the hexagon in one line, with the inside facing down. Make sure they lie tightly to each other. Apply a couple of strips of adhesive tape and leave a small piece behind the surface.

We turn the whole thing over and apply glue to all sides cut at an angle of 30 degrees.

When all this takes the shape of a hexagon, simply fix it with the remaining pieces of tape.

That's all, now we wait for the glue to dry, and the job is done. Such shelves can be hung on the wall in small corners, good luck to you)

Finding storage space is one of the main problems that people face while thinking through a design, and after that too. Sometimes, even in a large room, another bulky cabinet will look out of place, but what if you need to place a collection of figurines or a dozen books? Salvation in such a situation is wall shelves, which we will talk about today.

Types of shelves

Wall shelves, although they themselves are a variety, they also differ in location. Conventionally, they are divided into the following types:

The lightest and most common option, which is attached to flat wall. But precisely because of their simplicity, they provide a wide field for the flight of imagination: shelves of different geometric shapes, sizes, arranged in the form of a honeycomb or creating complex compositions.

Such structures can become a single board nailed to a wall, or form the silhouette of a tree, with each “branch” serving as storage. Bookshelves They can be inclined or asymmetrical. In the ocean interesting ideas There are even round ones, only in the case of unusual figures it is necessary to think through every moment in advance: location, content, support points.

This place is usually empty due to its impracticality, however corner shelves not only rehabilitate the space, but also help transform the interior. Fastening is carried out on two adjacent adjacent walls. In this case, not only the internal, but also the external corner can be used.

The variability in the design of corner wall shelves depends more on the materials and decor, but even this solution itself looks unusual. More often, shelves are used for books or household items in the bathroom, as well as in storage rooms.

As the name implies, these shelves are not attached directly to the wall, but are suspended on ropes - from the ceiling or beam. This design is not very stable, so it is used for storing books rather than crystal vases. But it is ideal for creating original accents in a room.

Either one shelf or several can be installed. The first option is often created in the form of a triangle or the shelf is placed in a circle. The main thing is to make sure that the storage is reliable.

Materials for wall shelves

A wooden board nailed to the wall is the simplest shelf option that immediately comes to mind. But for modern design this is not enough. The choice of material, even for such a simple product, is quite wide, as are their capabilities.

Wood and derivatives

Even if this is an obvious basis, it should not be dismissed out of hand. Help diversify a wooden wall shelf complex shapes and fastening. For minimalism or loft, such a solution would be very appropriate. And if you want to fit an element into classic interior, it is recommended to pre-process the parts, and maybe even decorate them with carvings.

To save on material, you can use MDF, chipboard or plywood - beautiful, simple, practical.

Metal

But metal wall shelves will definitely attract attention and fit harmoniously into the interior, especially if it is high-tech, fusion or, as an option, minimalism. Only their installation will require special skills.

This foundation has high characteristics - durability, reliability, strength. And pre-treatment will save you from corrosion.

Plastic

A cheap, pliable, versatile material that can look simple or luxurious, imitating natural options, but eliminating their disadvantages. Especially if such a shelf on the wall is filled with objects, so that guests will not have the opportunity to take a closer look at its details. For the bathroom - a very good solution!

Glass or mirror

This foundation has a significant drawback - fragility. A sharp push or blow can damage the shelf, but this situation will not arise when storing light items. Is it worth mentioning how elegant glass looks and how glamorous a mirror surface is? This will give the interior a feeling of weightlessness.

What types of fastenings are there?

You will also have to choose how to attach the shelf to the wall yourself - from three options. The reliability and mobility of the design depends on your decision.

Installation is done with dowels or anchors to the wall. This ensures a strong fixation of the entire product, increasing its load-carrying capacity and strength. If the shelves are intended to store heavy items, then this type is perfect. But there is a big disadvantage - it is very difficult to dismantle it without consequences for the wall or structure.

Moderately rigid fastening with brackets and mounting hooks, which is easy to implement at home, unlike the first type. If necessary, they can be dismantled without damaging the shelf, after which a new one can be installed.

Fully in line with modern trends towards functionality and mobility, such wall shelves are installed according to the principle of extension: the lower tiers become a support for the upper ones. Various combinations of shades or shapes that complement each other look appropriate.

Selecting shelves to match your interior style

At quality work shelves turn into full-fledged furniture, which, like any other item, must be harmoniously integrated into the style of the room.

Modern style

Everything here is simple and at the same time varied: they are suitable as laconic products from different materials, and entire ensembles of various geometric shapes. Instead of empty decoration - conceptual aesthetics. The priority is modular or mobile types of wall shelves.

It is necessary to focus on the decoration of the walls: in the case of a neutral coating, you can fit in bright designs, and on the side with a bright finish it is better to do without shelves.

Classic style

Turn around in classic style It won't really work out. Wooden shelves on a flat wall, or, in extreme cases, corner shelves. Brackets can be brought to the fore if they are used and fit the design.

Provence

Provence also makes similar demands. Only the processing of the base needs to be approached more carefully. First, use wood or its derivatives. Secondly, cover them with white paint and, if possible, create the effect antique furniture. Some carelessness in installation will add charm to the structure, but we must not forget about its strength.

Minimalism

To begin with, we note that with this style it is unlikely to be possible to instruct open shelves a lot of “small things” - that’s why it’s minimalism. To accommodate many items, it is recommended to provide shelves with doors, thereby hiding disharmony from view. Glass or wooden surfaces- even, smooth, directed strictly horizontally.

Loft

The freedom-loving loft offers us the greatest variety. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to fanatically polish the boards to perfection - slight negligence is quite organically combined with brick walls, characteristic of this style.

An excellent option is shelves suspended on a thick rope or a corner structure based on a pipe brought to the fore. In general, the loft allows you to turn the disadvantages of space into advantages, and technical elements into decorative and aesthetic ones.

Shelf decor

In addition to the fact that you can choose wall shelves with interesting design, they can also be further decorated for greater effect. To avoid the effect of clutter, make sure that the practical content of the products does not conflict with the details.

The simplest option that is suitable for standard wooden shelves- surface decoration. Here you can use all available tools: stencils, decoupage, decorative tape, and so on. This solution will look good on neutral walls, for example, painted white.

The Provence style interior is characterized by the use of textile elements, so why not decorate the shelves with them, laying out several beautifully hanging scarves with patterns? Cozy and practical.

Candles placed singly or in groups will give you a romantic mood. However, you can experiment with light sources by entering some current trends. For example, wall shelves with backlights—mounted lamps that softly illuminate the parts located on them—look unusual.

Tubular fasteners on shelves can be used as a kind of “hanger”: for example, for a lamp, towels or garland. With a little effort, a simple storage space turns into graceful element interior

It would seem such a simple product, but there are so many options! But not all of them are easy to implement on your own and, let’s face it, even for simple type certain skills are required. Before you move on to creating a shelf with your own hands, read the basic recommendations that will help beginners in furniture making or experienced craftsmen.

So, before the main process, you need to think through the design in detail and make a sketch. Determine for yourself the purpose of installing the shelf, the expected things that will be stored on it, location, shape and size.

Having assessed the load, select the material and method of fastening. After this, markings are made on the surface of the base, and the material is cut.

The resulting modules are assembled, repeated measurements are taken, which are compared with the markings for fasteners. Next is carried out finishing elements, namely sanding, tightening and painting, if necessary.

Fasteners are installed on the wall surface and on the shelf, after which the parts are secured, as well as level adjustment with final fastening.

In addition to the options listed, we present you with 30 more photos with ideas for wall shelves that will help you decide on interesting solution. Inspiration and beautiful interiors!

Do you like the shelves from the design blog? We suggest not “waiting for Zhdun”, but making them yourself. Don't you know how? Yes, this gives a complete newbie a job for one evening! Now we'll tell you everything.

Designers love hexagons: no matter what community you look into, they’re everywhere ceramic tiles in the form of honeycombs, hexagon furniture, and even fashionable shelves on the walls. Of course, you can buy these for yourself in some online store, but why spend so much money? A board, a couple of screws, and the remains of wood glaze - “Whew!”, and before you know it, fashionable shelves will appear on the wall.

To make a shelf yourself, you will need:

  • boards 1-2 cm thick, 10 cm wide (it is better to calculate the length individually);
  • a pack of wood screws;
  • corner brackets - for fastening shelves;
  • screws with dowels - for fastening shelves.
  • drill and drill bits;
  • grinder or sandpaper;
  • construction tape;
  • ruler.
  • white paint Belinka Email Universal;
  • Belinka Interier colored glaze;
    (or any other wood paints for interior work).

Making a wall shelf with your own hands

To estimate how many shelves and what configuration you want, take a sheet of notebook and sketch out the desired design. Let it be individual hexagons scattered across the wall, or collected in groups - it’s up to you to decide. Any size can be made. For example, take the edge length as a basis - 20 cm. Now count how many edges you have drawn, and multiply the number by your edge length - this is the total footage of the board you need to buy. (And if there are any pieces left, you can make a shelf as a gift to a friend).

Let “advanced” woodworkers start by cutting wood circular saw, and we, according to tradition, will go to the store, where we will buy boards and immediately ask them to cut them to the sizes we need.

The main thing to tell the workshop is that you need 30° cuts! Don't forget.

Now put all the pieces together to check that everything fits together. Order? Let's go home to collect shelves.

At home we put the parts together again. It is more convenient to do this on a flat floor. We drill holes, and only then drive in the screws - otherwise the boards may crack. We assemble all the elements according to the intended design.

We sand all surfaces well and move on to painting. In the version in the photo, all the shelves are painted with azure, and the ends are painted with white enamel for wood.

  1. Regardless of whether you paint the shelves with glaze, enamel or other decorative coating, choose reliable paints that are safe for health. These must be materials for interior work; you don’t want to breathe harmful substances, do you?
  2. If the standard azure color does not suit you, you can mix several colors of the same brand yourself. True, you will have to do test paints on an unnecessary board and wait for it to dry.
  3. Apply the first layer of glaze with a brush or roller, and after 3-4 hours the second. It is also recommended to apply enamel in 2 layers. Bookshelves, like other furniture, can be varnished if desired: for furniture in the room we recommend Belinka Interier Lak.

In this article I will tell you how to make modular shelves in the shape of a honeycomb from cardboard. I haven't considered using wood. Since I don’t have a tool to process it. Corrugated cardboard is affordable (and free) and easy to work with.

Step 1: Gather Materials

List of required materials:

  • Sheets of double-walled cardboard (in my case, the thickness was about 7 mm)
  • Regular cardboard
  • Cutter
  • Glue (PVA)
  • Paper clips (use the largest ones that can hold at least 1 inch of material)
  • Masking tape
  • Dye
  • Spray paint in cans
  • Putty
  • Sandpaper

Step 2: Shelf Design and Template

DIY honeycomb shelves: 266mm long x 187mm high x 150mm deep. It's pretty modest for a shelf, but given that we're using cardboard, I was worried that large size will compromise the integrity of the structure. You can increase the size by adding more layers (thickness).

My idea to build a shelf in the form of a “sandwich” from corrugated cardboard with a layer of regular. This will turn the corrugated cardboard into a shape similar to wooden board, easy to form and glue.

You can see the template with dimensions in the picture above. Please note that my corrugated cardboard is 7mm thick. If the thickness of yours is different, please adjust the sizes accordingly.

Step 3: Draw and cut out the template

Draw the patterns: There will be two (2) A patterns for the top and bottom and four (4) B patterns for the sides. Total of six (6) cardboard “boards”.

Step 4: Bend the Cardboard

Create a fold to make it easier to bend and fold. Fold like a corrugated cardboard envelope.

Step 5: Cut the Corrugated Cardboard

Cut the corrugated cardboard to the size of the cut out template. Insert the corrugated cardboard into the folded cardboard. Apply large number glue on the “sandwich”. Use a clamp to secure the cardboard while the glue dries.

Once dry, cut off the excess cardboard on both sides. Use the outside corner of the cardboard as a guide (that's the reason for using sandwich cardboard).

The angle is important to join the cardboard boards together. If the corner is slightly off, you will have a hard time gluing it and it won't be a perfect hexagon shape.

Step 6: Glue the Boards

At this point you will have six (6) cardboard boards. To make it easier to glue them together, place the boards on a flat surface first. Use kraft tape or masking tape to hold the boards together. Turn them over and apply glue along the joint edge of each board.

Then fold the boards to form a hexagon shape. Here's a tip on how to make sure your shelf is truly hexagonal. Draw a hexagon shape template (from the template in step 2) on a piece of paper. While the glue is still wet, place the shelf on top part paper. This will help you make sure you have the exact hexagonal shape you want.

Step 7: Putty, sand, paint

Remove the masking tape and begin filling the gaps with putty. After this, smooth the rough surface with sandpaper. Be careful while sanding because you may scrape off the surface of the cardboard (we're dealing with cardboard here, not wood). I applied a thin coat of white paint ( water base) onto the shelf and then finished covering with acrylic.
