How to make a round lid for a well. Well design: well house (open and closed)

The well, first of all, is a source of cool and clean water. drinking water, but besides this, it performs another function on plot of land– decorative. Therefore, every detail must be given special attention, in particular, on appearance designs great value renders the cover. Next we will look at how to do it wooden cover for a do-it-yourself well, which copes well with the tasks assigned to it.

General information

It must be said that this part of the well performs an important practical function - it protects the shaft from debris, animals and insects getting into it. Thus, we can even say that the lid affects the quality of drinking water. Therefore, its production must also be approached responsibly.

Cover materials

A do-it-yourself well roof can be made from various materials:

  • Metal;
  • Trees;
  • Plastics;
  • Plywood;

In order for it to cope with its main task, the structure must be durable and at the same time provide air flow. Most a good option is a do-it-yourself well cover made of wood. She has good performance characteristics and at the same time fits perfectly into almost any style of the rest of the structure.

Simple wooden cover

Making a well cover with your own hands is quite simple.

The most important thing is to choose for this suitable tree, for example, this would be suitable:

  • Aspen;
  • Pine;
  • Elm and some other species.

The size and shape of the product is determined by the neck of the well and the type of construction. The simplest option is to make it in the form of a hatch, which can be folding or removable. Which design to choose is up to you.

Tools and materials

Before you make a roof on a well with your own hands, you should prepare a certain set of tools and materials:

  • Boards;
  • Bars;
  • Nails;
  • Hinges or thick rubber belt;
  • Hacksaw;
  • Hammer;
  • Screwdrivers.

Advice! It is better to make the design double, which will provide more reliable thermal insulation in winter time.

Hinged lid

The hinged lid with handle is easy to use and easy to manufacture. Besides, carved handle and loops give it a decorative look.

The instructions for making this design are as follows:

  • Work should begin with taking measurements and installing the sheathing. The lathing must be done, otherwise the hatch will not fit tightly to the neck. It is made from timber according to the size of the neck.
  • Next, the sheathing is sheathed with planks.
  • After this, the hinges are installed. This part can be replaced with a belt made of dense rubber, one end of which is attached to the hatch, and the other is fixed to the bolt.
  • Then handles are installed on the hatch. The simplest option is to fill the block. However, for greater aesthetics, it is better to buy this element in a store. True, the more beautiful and complex the pen, the higher its price.
  • To ensure the safety of the well, for example, when the owners are away from the site, you can use locking devices. For example, if the well contains expensive equipment.

Advice! A pre-made roof diagram for a well with your own hands will simplify the work and prevent errors in the process of manufacturing the structure.

After the hatch is made, you should think about the decorative design of the well.

There are two most traditional options:

  • Make a decorative house on poles.
  • Install a round or rectangular roof.

The roof on a well with your own hands can be made flat, gable, sloping, etc. - at your discretion. To decorate it you can use the most different materials:

  • Bituminous shingles;
  • Metal tiles;
  • Straw;
  • Carved decor, etc.

Now the well will also serve as a decoration for the area, and at the same time you will not worry about foreign objects getting into the water.

Textolite cover

Materials

An alternative to traditional wood is textolite, from which you can also make a well roof with your own hands.

To make it you will need the following set of materials and tools:

  • Textolite;
  • Profile pipes;
  • Metal corners;
  • Sealant;
  • Cement,
  • Handles and hinges;
  • Welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • Roulette;
  • Hammer and screwdrivers.

Manufacturing

When all the tools and materials are prepared, the work should be done in the following order:

  • Using a tape measure, measurements are taken and cut according to them. metal corners at an angle of 45 degrees.
  • Then the resulting sections are welded into a quadrangle.
  • After this, welding marks are removed with a grinder.
  • Then the profile tubes are cut so that they are a centimeter shorter than the corners.
  • Tubes are placed in a frame made of corners around the perimeter and welded to the base.
  • Then two PCB plates are cut to size.
  • Next, it is sheathed with PCB plates metal frame. You can fasten them using self-tapping screws.
  • After this, fittings are screwed to the resulting hatch - canopies, handles, etc.

To give the structure a more attractive appearance, it can be sheathed with any finishing material, to your taste. In addition, the roof over the well can simply be painted with your own hands and left “as is.”

Advice! Insulation can be laid between the plates, which will protect the well from freezing in the winter.

Source of water in country house or at the dacha there is often a well. But if it is not protected from external factors, then as a result you can get a number of problems with the functioning of this structure. In earlier times, a do-it-yourself well cover was made in the form of a very attractive decorative house made of wood. Today, there are various materials in use from which this protective element can be made.

Main functions, materials used

It would seem that the main and only task of the lid is to provide protection against debris getting inside the well: leaves, household waste– pollution is carried away by the wind, which is usually very strong in open spaces. But that’s not all, because there are other functions whose implementation allows you to use water all year round without unnecessary difficulties, namely:

  • providing protection from direct sunlight, which is more conducive to the growth of algae at the bottom of the well;
  • insulation of the structure, without which in winter the liquid will instantly freeze, and as a result not only the owner will suffer, who will lose a source of water, but also pumping equipment, too exposed to low temperatures;
  • providing ventilation;
  • protection from small children playing on the site, as well as from birds and animals;
  • decorative function, because the opportunity to complete all the buildings on the site in the same style is often used.

The materials that are used today to make the lid are: metal; still the same tree as in former times; plastic; plywood.

Tip: To enhance thermal insulation properties lids, you can use insulation, for example, polystyrene foam.

Main types of designs:

  • wooden lid;
  • on a metal frame using textolite;
  • plastic cover (usually purchased ready-made);
  • based on plywood;
  • reinforced concrete.
Well cover - photo ready-made version made of wood

In addition to differences in material, a do-it-yourself well cover is made taking into account some design features:

  1. Round or square design.
  2. Removable lids and hinged elements.

Wooden cover

One of significant advantages– simplicity of the device. The material is quite light and easy to install. However, this option will last for best case scenario 5 years, but this is subject to proper processing paint and varnish materials. The most suitable wood: alder, oak, linden, birch, and the recommended size of the main board: 20x150 mm (thickness, width), in addition, 40x40 mm bars will be required.

In the production of such a cover, sealant, varnish or stain, fastening elements (nails, bolts) are used; handles are also required for the convenience of opening the well cover.

The length of the boards always corresponds to the dimensions of the well. Next you need to adhere to the following scheme:

  • wood is stuffed on top of two parallel bars, the material is placed as tightly as possible;
  • on the wrong side, to give greater rigidity, it is recommended to nail another block, placing it diagonally;
  • the canvas is processed: sanded, chamfered, if necessary, the shield is made round (using a grinder);
  • all existing gaps in the cover must be sealed with sealant;
  • At the final stage, the structure is varnished.

For ease of use of the lid, one or more handles are attached on top wooden canvas. If necessary it is possible to make a version with a hinged sash. The main work is repeated. Again, if desired, an additional layer of thermal insulation is provided, for which insulation - EPS (extruded polystyrene foam) - is attached to the underside of the lid. Also, a metal sheet can be laid on top of such a structure.

In this case, 2 shields are made for the lid: one large one with a pre-prepared hole for the sash and a second, small one, which will act as a sash and is attached to the first one on hinges

Combined option - metal and textolite

Such a self-made well cover requires much more effort, since you will have to use welding machine, grinder for processing seams, make concrete screed fixed part at the top of the well. The movable structure is made of metal elements– rectangular pipes, and textolite is also used.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

Now a little more detail about how to make a lid for a well yourself, or rather, its lower part. To do this, in accordance with the dimensions of the finished frame, formwork is prepared around the head of the well. On top wooden structure The lower part of the frame is attached from the corners. A metal strip should be installed along the very edge of the well head, trying to give it a rounded shape. Concrete mixture is poured into the created empty space between the formwork and the tape.

Upon completion of this work and after the resulting structure has completely hardened and settled, you can attach a frame made of profile pipes and textolite. This is done using two loops. WITH outside The handle is secured with bolts. The final stage is the application of enamel to metal parts in two layers.

Reinforced concrete structure

This is the most labor-intensive option available. To implement it from concrete mixture casting a lid for a well with your own hands - step by step instructions the work is presented below:

  1. In accordance with the size of the well rings, a hole is dug in the soil 10 cm deep, which determines the thickness of the structure. The bottom is covered with polyethylene. Usually a movable opening flap in the middle is assumed, for which a smaller formwork is built in the central part of the pit.
  2. The first layer of concrete mixture is poured to a height of no more than 5 cm.
  3. Next, the reinforcing mesh is laid.
  4. The solution is poured on top to the edges of the pit.
  5. After waiting a few days (3-4) until the cover has completely hardened, you can install it on the well ring, having first removed the film.
  6. Seams are necessary between the well and reinforced concrete structure patch up cement mortar.
  7. In place of the window, a sash made of metal, wood, or plastic is installed in the concrete cover, depending on preference.
. This device will significantly improve work efficiency.

All of the lid options described have their pros and cons. When choosing a suitable solution, you should take into account your capabilities, the availability of free time for its implementation, the degree of convenience in operating the structure and the length of its service life. Most susceptible to influence weather conditions is a wooden lid, however, it is this option that looks the most attractive in appearance when properly treated with paints and varnishes.

Another option on how you can make your own cover for a well is shown in the video.

A well in the country, and sometimes near the house, is a necessary thing. But just sticking out of the ground concrete ring with some kind of lid it’s not very pleasing to the eye, and the comfort of use is below average. To correct the situation, it is necessary to improve it and install a gate that will facilitate the rise of water. Ready-made well fences are sold - with a roof and a gate, but they either have a hefty price or look pitiful. Therefore, most often a house for a well is built with one’s own hands. Then you can use your imagination and arrange everything the way you need.

Types of well houses and their tasks

The primary task of a well house is to protect water from various substances - dust, leaves and other similar contaminants. This requires a tight-fitting lid. Open wells are only possible for technical water - for irrigation. Water from them cannot be used for other purposes. So if you plan to at least wash dishes, the well must be closed tightly.

Protection from precipitation of any kind is also necessary: rain and melt waters carry with them very dirty water with fertilizers dissolved in it, animal waste, various debris and impurities. If it gets into the well, it can cause serious contamination. To protect against precipitation, they make a canopy, most often a gable one - this makes it easier to remove precipitation.

Another purpose of the well house is to protect from strangers or, in any case, to ensure safety for children. To do this, they make latches or cut in locks.

To make it easier to raise water, they install racks and gates - in the simplest case, a rotating log with a handle to which a chain is attached. And all this together should still please the eyes of the owners, but at the same time require minimal care.

Open or closed

As you can see in the photo, the well house can be open or closed. It’s cheaper and easier to make an open one: the well ring can be trimmed with stone or wood, the lid, racks and canopy can be made of wood or metal - whatever will cost less. A minimum of materials is required for this structure. There is only one “but” - in winter the water in such a well can freeze. If you don't plan to use it in cold weather, no problem.

But for winter use you need insulated well house. But even then it can be made open:

  • buy a polystyrene foam “shell” for the well - they are of a suitable size, secure it, and then lay the finishing on top of it;
  • The overlap of the ring and the lid should be made of several layers of wood, and the boards should be laid in different directions, overlapping the joints.

Another option is to make an enclosed house. It is slightly larger in size than a well ring. The existing air gap is already a good heat insulator, but the protection can be further improved by filling the gaps with foam, for example.

What to make from

Choosing an appearance sometimes takes a long time. The fair half of humanity especially “suffers” from the desire to decorate a well, going through numerous design options and spending a lot of time doing this. In fact, everything is simple: if you have a house and a well is located nearby, you should decorate it in the same style and, if possible, in the same color. Agree, it looks good.

What to do if the house is brick or plastered? Choose a finish that matches the style. If this is one of the first buildings on the site, just do it as you like.

The question often arises: to make it from metal or wood. Wooden ones certainly look beautiful. But without proper care, they quickly lose all their attractiveness and become gray and ugly. If you are not afraid of the prospect, update regularly, at least once a year. protective coating(delete old paint, then paint it again), make it from wood. If this is not for you, make it from metal. The entire structure or just the frame is your choice. What’s bad about this option: a frame made of galvanized metal profiles, covered with siding. Especially if the house is decorated in exactly the same way.

As you understand, there are a lot of options. First choose the type - open-closed, then materials and finishes to your taste, understand the design, make a house for the well with your own hands.

Canopy for a well with a lid - an open house

Structurally, the device is simple: there are two racks located one opposite the other. They serve as a support for the canopy, and a gate is also attached to them - a device for lifting buckets of water. For a drawing of an open house with dimensions, see the photo below.

Please note that the posts can be dug in after the well ring has been finished. Depending on this, the order of work changes, but the design remains the same in any case.

How to make a canopy

First, the canopy is assembled. Make two side triangles according to the required dimensions. The drawing above shows only the approximate spread of two extreme points. If necessary, it can be made more. The length of the canopy depends on where the posts will be placed - close to the well ring or behind the casing. The approximate dimensions of the canopy with a ring diameter of 100 cm are shown in the photo below.

Dimensions of a well canopy for a diameter of 100 cm

The structure can be assembled from a galvanized profile, metal profile pipe or wooden beam. To prevent the profile from bending, it is reinforced at the door fastening points - you can put a wooden block or a metal corner inside.

To ensure that rain does not get inside, the expansion must be made much larger than the size of the ring - at least 20 cm on each side.

If the racks will be attached directly to the concrete ring, the order of work is slightly different. First, a frame is assembled that covers the ring. In the photo it is made from a 30 mm thick board. The racks are also made of the same board, the place of attachment to the concrete is reinforced with overlays. They also play a decorative role.

If the canopy turns out to be heavy, it is advisable to use timber of greater thickness, otherwise it will not withstand the load.

Afterwards, the previously assembled roof is attached to the racks. You can make triangles right on the spot, but it’s more convenient to prepare them in advance, assemble the rafter system, and place them ready-made on racks.

Next is finishing. Sew up with boards, clapboard, roofing material. Just keep in mind that if you use raw boards, they will dry out after some time and gaps up to 5 mm thick will form between them. There is no question of any hygiene then: rain and dust will fall in... Using a dry board is also not very good - in wet weather it will swell, the flooring " will go like a wave" In general, if you want to have clean water, build a house with doors - closed. There are more chances to protect moisture from contamination.

Do-it-yourself indoor well house

We are talking about this type of shelter for a well - with a door. If you also make a lid inside, dust will definitely not get in.

A frame is built, then it is put on the head of the well and secured with anchor bolts.

  1. support post made of 100*200 mm
  2. short support posts made of the same timber 100*200 mm
  3. fastening beam 30*60 mm
  4. triangular beam

We assemble the frame and attach it to the ring using short bars. Then we begin assembling the pallet. Assemble the flooring from a board 30*100 mm or so. The frame is sheathed with boards or sheet material, such as waterproof plywood.

To ensure that the doors hold well, you can install additional jibs. We hang doors - one or two, as desired. To make it easier to navigate, below are drawings with dimensions.

Using the same scheme, you can make a roof for a metal house. If available, you can use a profile pipe. It is easier to attach finishing material to it.

How to make a completely closed frame

You can also hide a concrete ring in the house. In this case, the gate posts are usually installed separately, and then the frame is assembled. Choose the dimensions so that the design freely covers the ring. The height is 20 centimeters higher than your height: so that you can calmly bend down and get the bucket.

We take the profiles from thick metal, galvanized. From the guide we assemble two identical frames - the “floor” and the upper level of the ring. They are connected by racks (profile for racks). The result is a cube with filled sides.

We cut off the sides of the guide profile, leaving the “back” intact. This way you can make a triangle. We attach a stand that is equal to the height of the entire house. If you want to have equal slopes, the rack is attached in the middle. You can make the far slope steeper, then the stand moves 15-20 cm from the center.

We attach the notched profile to the fixed rack. We get one of the elements rafter system. We perform the same operation on the other side. We connect the resulting tops of the triangles with a crossbar.

On the side of the door we add racks - on both sides. It’s better to strengthen them - put them inside wooden blocks and fasten with self-tapping screws.

Fastening roofing material, for example, a profiled sheet, covered with plywood. The plywood is then laid and nailed soft tiles— who has what technology. The “foot” and sides of the roof are finished with any material. If you want, you can use wood - clapboard, imitation logs or timber, or you can use siding.

IN in this case The same materials were used as when cladding the house: so that everything looked like a single ensemble.

Another video example of assembly from a drywall profile in video format.

Making a well ring with your own hands

If a head or canopy is made, the gray concrete ring remains visible. The view is not the most attractive, I just want to decorate it.

Stone finishing

The most popular way to decorate a well is to decorate it with stone - pebbles or small crushed stone. If everything is more or less clear with the finishing material - buy or assemble, then the question of what to attach it to remains. There are several recipes:

We offer the third recipe for how to line a well with stone in video format. The composition of the mixture is very similar here, but before applying the solution, a mesh is fixed to the ring. With this technology, nothing will definitely fall off.

An interesting version of a hinged lid for a well is proposed in the following video: it hinges almost completely, but whether such a device is needed is up to you to decide.

Photo options for finishing wells

The water in the well should always be clean, not freeze in winter, and remain cool in summer. To do this, the well shaft is covered with a lid. It can be solid or double - with the presence of a main open part and a closing hatch. In any case, the design is not difficult in self-production. A do-it-yourself well cover is most often made of wood, metal, plastic, and concrete. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the most important characteristics reliable well cover, as well as the manufacturing technology of several similar “models”.

The well cover must be strong and durable. In addition, it is desirable that it “suits” the style of the well and fits into garden design

A well without a lid will quickly turn into a sump with dirty water. Why? Because garbage, dust, various small animals (toads, mice, snakes, etc.) will freely fall into the well and “muddy” the water. The lid will help preserve the quality of drinking water - it is tight, without cracks, and made of moisture-resistant materials.

One more functional feature a good lid - to keep the water temperature within acceptable limits for consumption. The water in the well should always be cool, both in winter and summer. If the well is located in a region with frosty winters, it would be advisable to use an insulated cover. This will prevent the water from freezing and being unable to consume it.

If you have children in your family, you should take care to securely fix and tightly lock the lid with a lock or bolt. The surface material must be durable and able to withstand the weight of several children in case they decide to play on it.

To draw water, the lid will have to be lifted regularly. Therefore, it is necessary to provide comfortable handles in the design. Some covers have runners for sliding to the side.

The wooden lid does not rise, but moves to the side

Option #1. The simplest wooden cover-shield

This is the simplest protective structure, which is a square or round shield made of boards. Despite its simplicity, a wooden lid can look quite decorative, and if properly treated with paints and varnishes, it can last for at least 5 years.

The degree of decorativeness of a wooden shield cover depends on paint coating and correctly selected “accessories”: handles, locks, etc.

Required materials:

  • boards, thickness 20 mm, width 150 mm (it is better to use birch, oak, alder, linden wood);
  • wood sealant;
  • bars 40x40 mm – 3 pcs.;
  • metal handles;
  • nails;
  • bolts;
  • drying oil, stain, varnish or paint.

Work progress:

1. A shield is knocked down from boards. To do this, boards are stuffed onto two bars, placing them close to each other. The length of the bars should be equal to the width of the shield.

The lid must completely cover the well hatch, so the number of boards is selected depending on its size

2. As a stiffening rib, a third beam is stuffed diagonally between two bars (on the wrong side of the shield).

3. The shield is ground and chamfered with a plane. If you want the lid to be round, cut the shield with a grinder.

4. There should be no gaps in the wooden well cover. Therefore, the gaps between the boards are sealed with a special sealant. Additionally, it will play the role of a damper and compensate for seasonal deformations of the wood (in spring and autumn, wood expands, in summer and winter it contracts). Instead of sealant, you can cover the cracks with thin slats from the inside of the shield.

5. Cover the lid oil paint. For more decorative option do the following: apply a layer of drying oil to the wood, then 2 layers of stain of the selected tone (the tones look especially noble “ bog oak", "mahogany"). To add even more shine to the lid, you can cover the surface with a layer of matte or shiny varnish.

The dark lid covered with stained oak shade looks noble

6. This decorative cover is not attached to the well. It is placed on the head and, if necessary, lifted entirely. To do this, metal handles are attached to its front side.

Metal door handles can be purchased at construction and hardware stores

Option #2. Double wooden lid

This cover consists of a fixed part and two flaps. The fixed part is a round or square shield with a hatch in the center. The hatch is equipped with two doors, fixed on long hinges. The doors easily open outward when drawing water and needing access to water intake equipment.

It is convenient to lock the flaps of such a lid with a lock. This is especially true in summer cottages and in families with children.

For production you need:

  • boards, thickness 20 mm;
  • bars 40x40 mm – 4 pcs.;
  • bars 20x20 mm – 4 pcs.;
  • metal handles – 2 pcs.;
  • loops – 4 pcs.;
  • bolts;
  • nails;
  • wood sealant;
  • drying oil, paints and varnishes.

Execution technology:

1. Boards are hammered onto two 40x40 mm bars. Use boards different lengths so that a rectangular hole is formed in the center - a hatch. The shield bars should be on the lower and upper sides of the hatch. Two more bars are additionally nailed along the side walls.

2. Put together two small shields from boards and bars 20x20 mm. These will be the flaps for closing the hatch.

3. The flaps are hung on hinges and secured to the side walls of the hatch.

4. Metal handles are bolted to the sashes.

5. The seams between the boards are sealed with sealant.

6. In order to make the wood waterproof, the surface of the lid is impregnated with drying oil. After drying, apply paint, stain or varnish.

Option #3. Cover with metal frame

Opening lid on a metal frame. It consists of a fixed lower part attached to the head of the well. The upper, movable part is made of a metal frame covered with plastic - textolite.

This cover can be used to protect a well or sewer hatch

Materials for assembling the cover:

  • metal corners;
  • metal profile pipes with square section;
  • metal tape 4-5 cm wide;
  • textolite sheet;
  • loops;
  • metal sealant;
  • dye.

Stages of work:

1. Corners are cut into 4 pieces required length. The ends are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. They are connected into a square, securing the ends by welding along the inner and outer sides of the corners. The weld is cleaned with a grinder. Get a square frame for the fixed part of the lid.

2. Assemble a second frame of the same dimensions - for the closing part of the lid.

3. Cut profile pipes, lay them inside the upper frame along the perimeter of the frame (at the corners) and crosswise. Fasten metal parts welding, the seams are cleaned with a grinder and coated with a primer.

Frame for the upper, opening part of the lid

4. Two plates are cut out of PCB according to the size of the upper frame. They are secured with self-tapping screws on both sides of the frame. If insulation is necessary, insulation is placed inside the lid between the layers of textolite: polystyrene foam, basalt wool etc.

5. Bend the metal strip, giving it the shape of a concrete head.

6. Start making the lower part of the lid. Outside the well head, according to the size of the lid (metal frame), formwork from boards is installed. The lower frame is fixed to the formwork. A metal strip is laid along the diameter of the head.

7. The head is poured into the space between the formwork and the metal tape concrete mortar.

8. The connection between the fixed and moving parts of the cover is made using two hinges.

9. A metal handle is bolted to the textolite surface.

10. On metal parts of the cover and concrete surface apply 2 layers of enamel.

Option #4. Concrete cover

Well made of concrete rings, without decorative design, it is customary to cover it with a heavy concrete lid. You can make such a cover for a well in the form solid slab, and with a hole-hatch.

We propose to consider the process of manufacturing a concrete cover with a square hatch (dimensions 700x700 mm), which, during operation, is closed with a plastic, metal or wooden door. You can do it another way: leave the lid with the hole as it is, and build a brick “house” on top or wooden frame.

You can make such concrete covers with your own hands.

To make the lid, prepare:

Manufacturing process:

1. Prepare the formwork. Dig a round hole 10 cm deep. Its diameter should match the diameter of the concrete rings of the well. The bottom and walls of the pit are covered with plastic film. Since the lid will not be solid, but with a hatch, wooden formwork made of boards is installed in the center of the pit. To do this, four boards 700 mm long are fastened together in the form of a square.

The formwork is made of thick film and a wooden square made from boards

2. Mix the concrete solution.

3. Pour the solution into the formwork in a layer of 5 cm.

4. Place reinforcing mesh in the fresh solution.

5. Concrete is poured to the edges of the pit.

The concrete hardens for 3-4 days, after which the lid can be used

6. After 3-4 days, the concrete cover is freed from the film and installed on the well. The resulting seams between the lid and the concrete rings are sealed with cement mortar.

The concrete cover has significant weight, so it is securely held on the well rings. It's hard to move!

7. The hatch is closed with a metal, plastic or wooden door.

Option #5. Plywood well cover

Another modification of the well cover is presented in the video below. It clearly demonstrates the design of an opening plywood lid and describes the main stages of its production.

Wells can be located on the site not only with drinking water, but also drainage and sewerage. To ensure the safety of people and animals and to protect the well from debris and precipitation, the well must be closed. For this purpose, a plastic, wooden or metal well cover is used.

Types of covers

Depending on the design and purpose of the well and your desire, you can do:

  • a simple wooden lid
  • wooden with hatch,
  • metal,
  • concrete,
  • plastic,
  • top in the form of a house.

If necessary, install a lock or latch on the lid.

Simple wooden cover

A simple DIY wooden well cover can be round or rectangular. It is made from 4*4 or 5*5 cm bars, which are knocked together into a shield. To make a shield, the bars are laid tightly together in one or two layers and secured on the reverse side with two bars across. For structural rigidity, another diagonal block is nailed.

All gaps are filled with sealant or clogged with slats. The surface is thoroughly polished grinder. If you need to make the lid round, it is cut out according to the template.

To ensure that the lid lasts a long time, it is coated with an antiseptic and moisture-proofing compound. The outside can be painted, stained, or varnished. Handles are attached for ease of use.

Option with hatch

This design is more convenient, since you do not need to move or lift the entire lid to get water. How to make a cover for a well with a hatch?

The base of the lid is wooden shield, assembled from bars 4*4 or 5*5 cm, as in the previous version. In its middle, a hole is made for a hatch measuring approximately 50*60 cm. The hatch doors are made of thinner bars (2*2 or 2.5*2.5 cm), and they are attached to the base on hinges. The wood is also sanded, coated with protective compounds, and painted. Handles are attached to the hatch flaps from the outside.

Such a lid can be made not only from wood, but also from metal. To do this, a frame is welded from a 40*40 corner, a steel sheet 4-5 mm thick is welded to it, in which a hinged hatch is made. The frame can also be sheathed with textolite 8-12 mm thick. The metal structure must be painted to protect it from rust. First apply primer, then paint.

Made of metal

The metal well cover can be of a different design. It consists of a base, which is attached to the head of the well, and a hatch on a metal frame, covered with textolite. To make it you will need

  • corners,
  • square profile pipe,
  • metal tape 4-5 cm wide,
  • loops,
  • sealant,
  • textolite for the hatch,
  • dye.

The corner is cut into 4 parts, the ends are beveled at 45 degrees. From these, a frame is welded into a frame, and the welding points are ground with a grinder. This is the base of the bottom. For the frame of the lid, another similar frame is made.

The pipes are cut into pieces so that the frame made of them fits inside the frame made of corners. Also, the pipes are laid crosswise inside the rectangle, the structure is welded - two frames are welded to each other. Metal structures coated with primer.

Two sheets of textolite are cut to the size of the frame and attached to it on both sides with self-tapping screws. If necessary, insulation can be laid between the PCB plates.

For the base, the metal tape is bent to the shape of a well, as in the photo.

Wooden formwork is made around it to the size of the frame for the lower part. Concrete is poured into the space between the formwork and the ring. When it hardens, a lid is attached to the fixed part using hinges. Finally, the metal parts and concrete base are coated with two layers of enamel.

Made from concrete

Concrete covers can most often be seen on technical wells or on wells made from reinforced concrete rings. Concrete slab You can cast the desired shape yourself. If you need to close the well for drinking water, a hole for a hatch is provided in the slab.

How are reinforced concrete well covers made?

  • A hole should be dug at the site with a depth equal to the thickness of the slab.
  • Plywood or polyethylene is laid at the bottom of the pit.
  • Install formwork to form a hole for the hatch.
  • Concrete mortar is mixed, cement, sand and crushed stone are taken in a ratio of 1:3:4.
  • The first layer of concrete is poured; its thickness is about 4-5 cm.
  • Reinforcement is laid - this can be reinforcing mesh or steel rods or wire.
  • Pour the rest of the concrete and compact it thoroughly.

When the slab is installed, the joint with the ring is covered with cement mortar. The hinges for the hatch are secured with dowels, then the door is installed. Usually the hatch on concrete wells is made of metal.

How to close a drainage well

The drainage well must be closed with a hatch without holes. This is necessary so that precipitation does not get into it and the load on the system does not increase. If the drainage well is ready, the cover will already be included. For self-constructed drainage wells, you will also have to select the cover yourself. Plastic lids are available for sale different models and sizes.

How to close a sewer well

The well containing the sewage system needs a reliable, durable cover. Such a well is located close to ground level, flush with it or buried. The hatch must be flat and withstand heavy loads. A decorative cover can also be installed on the well, masking the hatch, for example, made of polyurethane, made in the shape of a stone or stump.

You can make it yourself from ordinary polyurethane foam, scraps of boards, foam and other materials. If you show your imagination, you can make interesting sculptures. The creation process looks like this:

  • the first layer of foam is applied to the base,
  • boards, pieces of wood, pieces of foam plastic, and so on are laid on it,
  • cover with the next layer of foam,
  • repeat these operations until reaching required sizes, gradually narrowing the lid and giving the desired shape,
  • After hardening, cut out the parts with a knife and sand them with sandpaper.

To protect the foam from atmospheric influences, it is covered with plaster or tile adhesive, and then paint the façade acrylic paint.

House-shaped finial

A cover for a well of this shape will not only perform its direct function, but also act as a decoration summer cottage. The house is gable roof on a small log house, a hatch is made in one of the roof slopes.

The house can be built from timber, metal, covered with siding, and decorated to your taste.

A wooden house looks beautiful, but in order for it to maintain its appearance, it needs to be taken care of: remove old layer varnish or paint and recoat, apply protective compounds. A house on a metal frame, covered, for example, with siding, does not require such maintenance. There are also ready-made metal, plastic and wooden houses. The house can be open or closed.

Closed house on a metal frame

Under closed house you can hide the concrete ring of the well. Such a house has a metal frame made of a profile pipe or metal profile. The height of the house should be approximately 20 cm higher than a person’s height to make it convenient to get the bucket.

  • First, two frames are welded - “floor” and “ceiling”.
  • They are connected by vertical posts.
  • They attach a post with a height equal to the height of the entire house - this is the basis for the roof.
  • The side parts of the profile, which will be the basis of the roof slopes, are cut off and a triangle is made. You need two such triangles. The roof slopes can be made equal or the slope with the hatch can be made flatter.
  • The triangles are attached to a vertical stand. The tops are connected by a crossbar - this is the ridge of the roof.
  • Mount the racks for the hatch on one of the slopes.

After assembling the frame, they move on to finishing the house. The roof can be made from corrugated sheets, bitumen shingles. The house itself is finished with clapboard, imitation timber, and siding. It looks beautiful if the well located near the house is made in the same style.

Open house

The open house is a canopy with a lid. To install it, two posts are installed on which the well gate is strengthened. The canopy is supported by posts.

Such a house does not cover the concrete ring, so it is finished, for example, artificial stone, covered with a log house. The racks can be dug in both before and after finishing the ring.

The canopy should protrude far beyond the edges of the well (at least 20 cm on each side) to protect it from precipitation.

The canopy can be made entirely of wood or on a metal frame.

You can make a lid for the well yourself or buy a ready-made one. In addition to the usual flat lid or structure with a hatch, you can make a decorative one or build a house with a roof.
