Maximum thickness of penoplex. Technical characteristics of penoplex

Penoplex is an extruded form of polystyrene foam. An improved version of polystyrene foam is produced by extruding polystyrene and special additives. In order not to get confused among the variety of types and to choose the best option for thermal insulation of a house from the inside and outside, you need to familiarize yourself with the technical characteristics, scope and installation technology of each type, study weaknesses and reveal all the advantages of penoplex.

To understand the principle of operation and effectiveness of a thermal insulation material, you need to know its structure, properties, positive and negative aspects.

Penoplex - a new generation of thermal insulation material

Production and composition of insulation

The penoplex manufacturing process consists of the following stages:

  1. Expanded polystyrene granules are placed in an extruder, where they are heated to a temperature of 130-140°C.
  2. Porophors - foaming additives - are introduced into the mass.
  3. Thick foam is squeezed out of the extruder, enters a conveyor and is cut into sheets of a given size.

Composition of porophors as part of penoplex

The composition of penoplex, in addition to expanded polystyrene and foaming agents, includes:

  • antioxidants – prevent thermal oxidation during processing and prevent destruction when using insulation;
  • flame retardants - reduce the flammability of the material;
  • antistatic agents, light stabilizers and modifiers protect against the harmful effects of the external environment.

Technical characteristics of penoplex

Properties of extruded polystyrene

Evaluation of the technical characteristics of penoplex is the basis for making a decision on the use of one or another type of insulation.

Based on the digital indicators, we can conclude that penoplex is an effective thermal insulation material. However, for objectivity, it is worth considering its properties in more detail:

  1. Minimal water absorption is one of the main qualities of insulation. Water can penetrate only into damaged external cells that were deformed during installation. There is no access for water inside the material.
  2. Low thermal conductivity. Due to its cellular structure and lack of water absorption, penoplex insulation has a low thermal conductivity coefficient. The combination of these qualities allows the material to be used for insulating roofs, foundations, and facades without an additional moisture-proof layer.
  3. Resistance to water vapor. The vapor permeability of a 2 cm thick penoplex slab is equal to that of one layer of wall roofing material.
  4. Resistant to compression and mechanical stress. Due to extrusion production technology, the smallest cells are distributed evenly, increasing the strength of the material. Under heavy loads, dents up to 1 mm deep may appear.
  5. Ease and convenience of installation. Despite its low thermal conductivity, penoplex is lightweight. This quality makes it easier to climb to great heights and does not entail significant weighting of the structure.
  6. Duration of operation. Most manufacturers provide a guarantee for extruded polystyrene foam for up to 50 years. It should be noted that this period is not exaggerated, since the material has undergone multiple tests (freezing, thawing and heating to high temperatures).
  7. Additional benefits: good soundproofing qualities and low chemical activity.

Penoplex has light weight and easy to handle

Standard sizes penoplex are:

  • length – 1200-2400 mm;
  • width – 600 mm;
  • thickness – 20-120 mm.

Combustion of extruded polystyrene foam

Weaknesses and disadvantages of insulation

Despite the wide list of positive characteristics, penoplex also has some disadvantages:

  1. High level of flammability (G3-G4) and smoke generation. The ability to self-extinguish depends on the quality of the material, the presence of fire retardants and the composition of the decorative fabric. After the fire ceases, the penoplex smokes acridly.
  2. The production uses polymers that, when in contact with UV rays, change their characteristics and can emit toxic fumes. In view of this, external use of penoplex is considered optimal.
  3. Some petroleum products and organic solvents deform the insulation, changing its structure. Such reagents include:
    • formaldehyde/formalin;
    • acetone/methyl ethyl ketone;
    • complex and simple ethyls;
    • benzene, xylene, toluene and similar hydrocarbons;
    • polyesters – epoxy resin hardeners;
    • oil paints;
    • kerosene, diesel fuel and gasoline.

Comparative characteristics parameters of different insulation materials

Comparison with other thermal insulation materials

The effectiveness of insulation is primarily determined by its thermal conductivity. The lower this indicator, the more heat is retained indoors. The scope of application of thermal insulation material largely depends on its density and vapor permeability. Comparative characteristics of popular insulation materials are presented in table form.

As you can see, penoplex (extruded polystyrene foam) has average thermal conductivity, inferior in thermal insulation properties polyurethane foam, polyurethane mastic and roofing felt. An important advantage of using “foam” products is the absence of joining seams, like with slabs.

Interesting. To preserve heat, foam insulation made from foamed PVC paste is sometimes used. In addition to the thermal insulation function, the material also plays a decorative role. However, it does not tolerate humidity and temperature fluctuations well, so it is recommended for indoor use.

The thickness of insulation to ensure heat capacity

High heat capacity allows you to reduce the thickness of the insulation.

  • Q – thickness wall structure, m;
  • R – heat transfer resistance (depends on climate zone, the average value is 2.1 sq. m°C/W);
  • Y – thermal conductivity of insulation, W/sq. m°C.

For example, when laying bricks minimum thickness the wall should be: 2.1 * 0.7 = 1.47 m. The same wall is made of polystyrene foam with a density of 30 kg / cubic meter. m will be thick: 2.1*0.036=0.076 m, or 76 mm.

Application area of pressed heat insulator

The scope of application of extruded polystyrene foam is very wide:

  • Foundation protection. Insulating the base of a building reduces the depth of soil freezing and increases the service life of the waterproofing material.
  • Thermal insulation of the basement. Installation of slabs is possible directly on gravel.
  • Insulation of floors and ceilings. Penoplex sheets are easily mounted on level base, when cutting, waste is minimal.
  • Creation of an insulating layer for the roof, attic space and balcony. These measures reduce home heating costs or office space.
  • Insulating the outside of a house with penoplex is a popular way to reduce heat loss. You can complete the facade cladding yourself - the technology is quite simple and does not involve the use of expensive tools.

Technical characteristics of different brands

Principles for marking thermal insulation boards by density

Modern designation different types Penoplex is an alphanumeric code. The marking indicates the properties and purpose of the insulation.

Penoplex 31 and 31C - characterized by low strength and maximum density of 30.5 kg / cubic meter. m. The difference between the two categories is in the flammability class - the first option contains fire retardants that increase fire resistance. Insulation materials 31 and 31C provide thermal insulation of static structures: sewer pipes, utility and heat-conducting systems.

According to GOST, penoplex 35 should have a density in the range of 28-38 kg/cu.m. m and compressive strength 83 kPa. Such indicators determine the versatility of the material. Type 35 is in demand for insulating walls, floors, pipelines and foundations. Plus - low fire.

Penoplex 45 and 45C have similar characteristics. Its high density makes it possible to use it in the construction of runways, highways, thermal insulation of foundations and floors in industrial and warehouse premises.

Parameters of Penoplex-Wall

Classification of insulation by purpose

Along with the marking described above, there is another system for designating different types of penoplex. It is simpler, and the name of the insulation indicates its scope of application.

Penoplex-Wall (series C) is mainly used for external insulation walls and when arranging plastered facades. Base finishing and internal partitions improves sound insulation and energy saving of the house.

Advice. When deciding which penoplex to choose for wall insulation, it is better to give preference to the C series material. Its characteristics are in many ways similar to extruded polystyrene foam grade 31C.

Characteristics of K series penoplex

Penoplex-Roofing (series K) is used as a thermal insulation layer roofing pie or insulation for attic floor. The density of the brand is 28-33 kg/cubic. m, so the material does not significantly weigh down rafter system.

Technical characteristics of Penoplex-Foundation series F are designed for insulation of the basement of the house and foundation. Suitable as a thermal insulation material for septic tanks where there is a risk of freezing of the body. Insulation materials of category F are used for improving garden paths on a sand-cement base.

Quality properties Penoplex-Foundation

Penoplex-Comfort is designed for internal and external works for home insulation. It is considered universal and is in demand for thermal insulation of balconies, loggias, roofs and walls. Minimal water absorption makes it indispensable for insulating “damp” rooms.

The density of the Penoplex base of the Comfort series is in the range of 25-35 kg/cu. m, and the remaining parameters correspond to insulation category 31C.

Characteristics of Penoplex-Comfort

Features of installation in different areas of application

The specifics of working with penoplex depend on the purpose of the insulation and the upcoming conditions of its operation. Compliance with the scheme and technology for placing the thermal insulation layer helps to maximize the properties of extruded polystyrene foam.

Technology for insulating house walls from the inside

In itself, insulating the walls from the inside of the room is an undesirable process, which should be resorted to only if thermal insulation from the facade is impossible. Internal installation insulation has significant disadvantages:

  • the point of condensation accumulation moves sideways into the thickness of the wall, and high humidity leads to its destruction;
  • the usable area of the room decreases;
  • supporting structures remain unprotected from exposure to cold air.

Important! Penoplex is the best option for insulating a room from the inside. Mineral wool has a high level of water absorption, and polystyrene foam - brittle material, which collapses under mechanical stress.

Negative Impact condensation on the wall

Thermal insulation algorithm from the inside:

  1. Prepare the base:
    • remove old finish;
    • fill cracks, clean from dirt and dust;
    • treat the surface with a primer.
  2. Cut the penoplex and prepare adhesive solution.
  3. Apply glue to the wall and insulation boards.
  4. Glue the penoplex to the wall, check the evenness of the adjoining sheets in the door and window openings.
  5. Additionally, secure the material with plastic dowels.
  6. Plaster the walls.

When working, you must consider:

  • optimal thickness penoplex for insulating walls from the inside - 3-5 cm;
  • it is necessary to ensure normal air circulation in the room - install wall valves or air handling unit.

“Rolling in” the insulation with a needle roller

How to properly insulate a building from the outside

The technology for installing extruded polystyrene foam boards on the outside of the house is similar to the process described above. However, there are some nuances:

  1. The recommended thickness of penoplex, according to SNiP 23-02-2003, is at least 12.4 cm.
  2. To increase the adhesion of the insulation to the wall surface, the slabs must first be “rolled in” with a needle roller.
  3. Installation of penoplex is carried out after installing window sills, ebbs and finishing slopes.
  4. The support for the insulation is the base profile, which is selected in accordance with the thickness of the material.
  5. The cladding is carried out with tile moisture-resistant adhesive, for example, Ceresit CT-83.
  6. The final fastening with dowel umbrellas is carried out after the glue has hardened - after 3 days.
  7. The joints between the sheets must be foamed.
  8. When using two layers of insulation, the layout of the slabs is carried out in checkerboard pattern.
  9. A reinforcing mesh is glued onto the fixed insulation, and a leveling layer and finishing are placed on top.

Video: using penoplex to insulate walls outside

Thermal insulation of floors in different rooms

The technology of floor insulation depends on its base. Thermal insulation of the floor on the ground is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Cover the soil base with gravel 40 mm thick.
  2. Lay down sand cushion at 10 cm.
  3. Thoroughly compact the base.
  4. Lay out the penoplex, insulating the seams with metallized tape.
  5. Lay the waterproofing membrane and secure the joints with tape.
  6. Place reinforcing composite or galvanized mesh.
  7. Place beacons for the screed and fill cement-sand mortar.
  8. After the screed has dried, cover the floor with finishing.

Scheme of floor insulation on the ground

Insulation of a concrete floor is carried out in several stages:

  1. Inspect the floor slabs for damage.
  2. Level the base, removing cracks, recesses, protrusions and remove dust from the surface.
  3. On the first floor, the floor is covered with waterproofing film, and on the second floor and above, polystyrene foam is laid directly on the concrete.
  4. Place the insulation on the glue, placing the sheets offset so that the seams do not coincide.
  5. Lay down waterproofing film and fill the floor with self-leveling mixture.
  6. Lay down a clean surface.

Insulation of concrete floor

Laying a water-heated floor involves placing layers in the following sequence:

  1. Fill the reinforced concrete floor with a leveling screed.
  2. Lay foam sheets and cover them with polyethylene, seal the joints.
  3. Place reinforcing mesh over the entire area of the room.
  4. Arrange the heating elements in a spiral and fill them with heat-resistant screed.
  5. Cover the floor with a finishing finish - tiles or laminate.

Layout of pipes when installing heated floors

Knowing the purpose, loads and operating conditions of penoplex, it will not be difficult to choose the right insulation. It is quite possible to do the installation of penoplex yourself, with the exception of high-rise buildings. facade works– in this case it is better to resort to the help of construction climbers.

The easiest way to insulate a building or structure in conditions of high humidity is to use Penoplex insulation. What thickness for frosts - 30 degrees C will be optimal if you use this particular insulation?

Let's look at how, according to SNiP, the thermal resistance of enclosing structures should be shown for those regions where such frosts are not uncommon.

We look at temperature indicators in the regions

We take the table from our website and look at those very regions - in fact, the entire Urals, Siberia and, especially, all the northern regions of the country.

A heat transfer resistance index higher than R=3 can be achieved if you use any modern highly efficient insulation. These are basalt wool, polyurethane foam, regular polystyrene foam and extruded polystyrene foam - Penoplex insulation. What thickness for frost - 30 degrees C will be sufficient to provide the planned thermal resistance for the walls of the house?

For Penoplex, as well as for basalt wool and for polyurethane foam this will be a layer 150 mm thick.

This is the minimum indicator that will allow, in frosts of -30 degrees C, to maintain the temperature in the house at +19 +24 degrees C using the standard design power of the boiler - 1 kW for every 10 sq.m. area of the house.

What does wall thickness matter?

At the same time, the house’s own walls are not of particular importance in these calculations. For example, how thick is Penoplex needed to insulate a half-brick house? 150 mm. What should be the thickness of Penoplex to insulate the walls of a house with 2 bricks? That's right, 150 mm.

Why is this so? Because compared to modern insulation materials, the heat resistance wall materials can be ignored, the difference is too great.

As you know, 150 mm of Penoplex is replaced in terms of thermal efficiency by 1500 mm of brickwork, because the heat transfer resistance of EPS is 10 times higher than that of brick.

Penoplex comfort insulation: technical characteristics

Penoplex is modern material, which basically contains nothing more than extruded polystyrene foam. In order not to have to remember the overly complex name of the material, marketers decided to call it penoplex comfort. Material of this type is used today very often and for different purposes, but mainly, as a rule, for insulating walls, floors, foundations or some other structures. Insulation has a huge number of advantages over other materials and excellent technical specifications.

The production of penoplex began quite a long time ago. Back in the 50s of the last century, when a special installation was invented that made it possible to extrude polystyrene granules. Since then, it has become more and more popular every year due to its very good properties.

Penoplex comfort insulation has simply excellent technical characteristics and many materials of this type cannot even compare with it. Buildings that are insulated with such insulation are very warm, and the material itself lasts for many years.

Basic properties and structure of the material

Penoplex comfort insulation, technical characteristics of which has a structure that directly resembles polystyrene, but at the same time it is made using a slightly different, more modern technology. Expanded polystyrene, which went through the extrusion stage, was made due to strong pressure and exposure to incredibly high temperatures. Using a similar procedure, enough lightweight material, which at the same time remains durable and incredibly warm. Penoplex retains heat comfort due to the fact that it contains microscopic air granules inside.

Penoplex has excellent properties, which made it so popular. The main properties include the following:

  1. The material practically does not absorb water and this makes it an excellent heat insulator. Water is absorbed only in those areas where there are at least small cuts and at the same time the air molecules are in an open state.
  2. The insulation has a very low level of thermal conductivity. Thanks to this, the material can be used on different objects.
  3. It does not allow steam to pass through and can retain it very well.
  1. Technical characteristics allow you to use penoplex comfort for many years and it will not be affected by either temperature or weather conditions. The material can thaw and freeze more than once, and the original properties remain the same, even in frosts of 30 degrees.
  2. The material has an incredibly high level of strength and can withstand enormous loads. This property was obtained due to the presence of small air bubbles inside each slab.
  3. Installation of the slabs does not cause any difficulties or problems. Each slab can be cut sharp knife, and the edges at the cut site will not crumble or break.

Area of application of insulation

Today, material such as penoplex comfort is used to build walls and at the same time use a modern system called “well masonry.” This type of masonry provides a unique opportunity to make walls thinner, 2-3 times thinner than brick ones, while enclosing structures do not exceed 64 cm.

In addition, the technical characteristics of penoplex allow the use of another system, which is usually called plastering. This technology for building walls is also very popular. The big advantage is that thanks to the large selection of decorative plaster you can create the most different design and implement the most daring decisions.

Penoplex comfort insulation allows you to get durable and warm walls. With its help, you can insulate the foundation and even the roof of any building, which makes the material truly universal.

Advantages and Disadvantages

This insulation has quite a lot positive points. These include strength, an environmentally friendly material, it does not shrink or decrease in size over time (this allows the material to be used to insulate the foundations of buildings). In addition, a high level of density ensures resistance to penetration of moisture, various types of steam or mold.

Special additives can further improve technical characteristics. For example, after special treatment, the slabs will not ignite even when exposed to the highest temperature. It is also worth noting the fact that this type of material is quite easy to work with. It is easy to cut and can be laid on any surface. Penoplex comfort will last for at least thirty years, which is quite a long time.

If we talk about the disadvantages of this material, then there are practically none, and if you approach the use of insulation correctly, then they can be completely avoided. Observe temperature regime and then the plates will not deform or melt. It should be noted that the insulation is too afraid of various types of organic solvents. Such substances can spoil the material, its shape, and integrity in a matter of minutes, which will have an extremely negative impact on the condition of penoplex comfort and its technical characteristics.

Slab dimensions

Today you can find several different types of this insulation. Experts designate each of these types with a specific number. In addition, they all differ in their size, thickness and density. For example, let's take a slab that has a density of 35. In such a situation, its thickness will be between two and ten centimeters. If we talk about the type of penoplex numbered 45, then its thickness is slightly larger and can be approximately 4 - 10 centimeters.

The length and width of any type of material remains standard. In most cases, the width of one slab is 60 centimeters, and the length, in turn, is from 1.2 to 2.4 meters.

What is the thickness of penoplex insulation for frosts of 30 degrees?

As a rule, in order to insulate walls so that they can withstand up to 30 degrees or more frost, slabs with a thickness of 100 mm are used. Of course, some experts recommend laying two 50 mm slabs in 2 layers and additionally bandaging them. This method is considered the most effective and is able to retain heat even in the most low temperatures and bad weather conditions.

Penoplex comfort technical characteristics, which clearly indicate that this insulation is really capable of protecting any room from the cold and at the same time, it is easy to use.

Penoplex polystyrene foam insulation

When it comes to universal products that can be used to insulate almost any surface, builders immediately talk about Penoplex insulation. The company of the same name has been producing it for more than 16 years. During this time, she was able to expand the scope of application as much as possible.

  1. Peculiarities
  2. Varieties
  3. Customers' opinions

Description and general characteristics

The review should begin with the manufacturing technology, which is based on the extrusion of polystyrene foam. The method makes it possible to create insulation consisting of miniature air chambers measuring about 0.1-0.2 mm, and the thermal conductivity of air is only 0.026 g W/(m °C). Thanks to this, the resulting material has the best insulation performance to date - 0.030 g W/(m °C). The cost of Penoplex fully corresponds to the price-quality ratio.

It has a number of other noteworthy properties:

  • Expanded polystyrene insulation has minimal water absorption, which is almost zero. Even after 10 days in water, it does not exceed 0.4% of the total mass.
  • Specially selected dimensions and L-shaped notches along the edge provide maximum ease of installation.
  • Its high load-bearing strength allows it to be used for the underside of highways.
  • Durability. Tests in which it is alternately exposed to temperatures of -40°C and +40°C while in water show that the technical characteristics of Penoplex are oriented for a period of more than 60-80 years.
  • Frost resistance.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the safety of the material. Reviews of use indicate buyer concerns about its fire safety. Varieties intended for roofs and walls have added fire retardants, due to which they belong to the resistance category G3 - normally flammable, the rest correspond to class G4 - highly flammable. As is known, substances formed during the thermal destruction of polystyrene foam are toxic. When insulating rooms with Penoplex slabs, all necessary fire safety measures must be observed.

Types of Penoplex insulation

Each of its types, such as “Foundation”, “Wall”, “Roof”, “Comfort” and “45” has similar properties and costs. Usually people are interested in the price per m2 of Penoplex, however, in the case of insulation, it is recommended to calculate not the area, but the volume, since the package will contain a different number of slabs depending on the thickness of the sheet and, determining which is cheaper, you can simply get confused.

The main function is to prevent moisture from entering concrete structures and the phenomenon of frost heaving. According to reviews, Penoplex copes well with it, because it occurs due to the freezing of water in the soil layer under the surface and leads to the formation of “cold bridges”, while the insulation prevents this.

1. Let's look at how much a Penoplex foundation costs and its main parameters:

  • Width – 600.
  • Length – 1,200.
  • Density – 29-33 kg/m. cube
  • Price – 4,255 rub./m. cube

2. Penoplex Wall - insulation for facade systems, plinths and various partitions. It is known that it is through the walls that the main losses occur - up to 45%. Thanks to the presence of a special quarter (L-shaped recess), it is possible to achieve perfect tightness of any structure, this is confirmed by numerous reviews. The material also allows you to significantly reduce the thickness of the walls - up to 0.44-0.64 m, made using the “well masonry” technology.

Specifications:

  • Width – 600.
  • Length – 1,200.
  • Thickness – 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 mm.
  • Density – 25-32 kg/m. cube
  • Cost – 4,255 rub./m. cube

Some owners are interested in what the parameters of Penoplex should be for frosts of 30 degrees? You can carry out a simple calculation for an area where such temperatures often occur - the Moscow region. Knowing the coefficient of thermal transfer resistance R, which for this region is 4.15 m2⁰С/W and thermal conductivity – λ, equal to 0.030 g W/(m °C), we substitute them into the formula δ = R * λ, where δ is the required thickness. We calculate: 4.15 * 0.030 = 12.45 cm.

3. Penoplex, due to its high strength, is successfully used for modern flat roofs with a heavy operational load, where it is planned to place car parking lots, green and park pedestrian areas and other infrastructure.

  • Width – 600.
  • Length – 1,200.
  • Thickness – 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 mm.
  • Density – 28-33 kg/m. cube
  • Price – 4,360 rub./m. cube

4. Penoplex brand Comfort is excellent for insulating city apartments and country houses; it has universal average characteristics. They can be used to insulate roofs, foundations, loggias, balconies, baths, saunas, swimming pools, garages and other outbuildings. It does not have a fine-fiber structure, so work is carried out without special protective equipment.

Parameters:

  • Width – 600.
  • Length – 1,200.
  • Thickness – 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 mm.
  • Density – 25-35 kg/m. cube
  • Cost – 4,360 rub./m. cube

5. In the description of Penoplex 45, the manufacturer indicates that it is designed for insulation of asphalt road surfaces for a wide variety of purposes - from local roads to large interregional highways, railways and airfield runways.

For such large objects, the size and density were specifically increased. This type is also suitable for permafrost conditions; it protects the soil under the road surface from thawing, thereby eliminating frost heaving. The price of Penoplex is quite high, but it is worth it.

Key Features:

  • Width – 600.
  • Length – 2,400.
  • Thickness – 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 mm.
  • Density – 35-47 kg/m. cube
  • Price – 5,505 rub./m. cube

“Three years ago, my husband and I insulated the floor and walls of the basement, which we use as a cellar, with Penoplex. Since then we have constantly recommended him to everyone we know. Thanks to him, ice stopped forming on the walls, and it was not so cold in the house. Previously, there was constantly high humidity in the house - they didn’t know how to deal with it. After isolation she miraculously gone! In general, I’m happy as an elephant, I recommend it!”

Lukyanova Valeria Igorevna. Kaluga.

“Before last winter, I thermally insulated my balcony, converted into a loggia. The apartment became noticeably warmer (2-3 degrees). The convector, installed specifically for additional heating, turned on 2-3 times when there were severe frosts. To be honest, I did not expect such an effect. A friend of mine didn’t do so well, however, builders from neighboring countries worked there, and I did it myself – conscientiously.”

Plotnikov Anatoly Ivanovich. Kazan.

Izvolsky Igor Borisovich. Permian.

“We have our own construction team. Somehow it happened that we have been using Penoplex mainly for more than 4 years. The first time they did it - people good review given, and then they ask us - what insulation do you recommend? We say that the previous owners used Penoplex - they liked it. So, word for word, we have been working with him for 4 years. By the way, the recess along the edge of the slab is very convenient, seals perfectly and reduces the consumption of glue, which we also use Penoplex, called Fastfix.”

Penoplex insulation: characteristics and installation features

Thermal insulation materials are building products designed to protect the enclosing structures (walls, floors, roofs, foundations) of buildings and structures from heat loss, in other words, to reduce the thermal conductivity coefficient.

Today we will talk about penoplex (penoplex) - one of the types of thermal insulation in modern construction.

What is penoplex insulation?

Penoplex slabs are extruded polystyrene foam, produced in the form of slabs. The structure of penoplex is similar to the structure of conventional polystyrene foam, however, penoplex has a number of advantages - primarily higher density and strength.

Technical characteristics of penoplex:

  • low thermal conductivity (thermal conductivity coefficient 0.03 W/m·ºK);
  • high strength (both compressive and bending);
  • low water absorption (no more than 0.2 - 0.4% by volume in 24 hours);
  • low vapor permeability (vapor permeability coefficient 0.007-0.008 mg/m h Pa);
  • durability over 50 years;
  • combustion resistance;
  • environmentally friendly (non-toxic, non-rotting);
  • wide operating temperature range (-50…+75ºС).

Extruded polystyrene foam is produced in several types (depending on density and area of application) in the form of slabs of standard sizes, which are not difficult to install and are easy to cut to the right size.

The table shows estimated cost PENOPLEX COMFORT, suitable for insulating foundations, walls, floors in cottages and apartments. The price depends on the quantity of material purchased - the larger the volume, the lower the price, and of course on the region of residence.

“Penoplex WALL” (density 25-32 kg/m3) – designed for insulation of external and internal walls, partitions, plinths for effective heat conservation and saving costs for heating premises of buildings. These slabs are also used in the construction of buildings when constructing walls using “well masonry”.

In case of insulation of external walls with penoplex, a plaster system can be made on top of the insulation using a mesh, or covered with any facing facade material(siding, tiles, lining).

"Penoplex FOUNDATION" (density 29-33 kg/m3) - used in the construction of basements, construction of foundations, insulation of septic tanks. Penoplex FOUNDATION slabs have increased strength and a practically zero water absorption coefficient.

"Penoplex ROOF" (density 28-33 kg/m3) - specially produced slabs for insulating flat and pitched roofs. Lightweight, rigid, moisture-resistant material with excellent thermal insulation properties.

"Penoplex 45" (density 35-47 kg/m3) - insulation for road surfaces, in particular runways, to prevent them from frost heaving of the soil and destruction of the top layer of the road surface. It is also widely used for insulating roofs in use, on which there are pedestrian areas and various areas, including parking lots.

“Penoplex COMFORT” (density 25-35 kg/m3) is a brand of thermal insulation boards used in house construction (private residential buildings, insulation of apartment walls, as well as loggias and balconies).

Penoplex installation

Insulation of external walls with penoplex is carried out in several stages.

  1. Preparatory work consists of preparing the walls for insulation, namely cleaning them from dirt, dust, old finishing materials, paint coatings. It is recommended to level the walls using a plaster mixture (in case of obvious unevenness of the walls) and treat them with an antifungal compound.
  2. Gluing of Penoplex boards is carried out using special adhesive compositions on a dry wall surface. The glue is applied directly to thermal insulation board.
  3. Mechanical fastening is carried out using dowels, at the rate of 4 pcs. per m2, after gluing the slabs with glue. Along the perimeter of windows, doorways and at the corners of the building, the number of dowels increases - 6-8 pcs. per m2.
  4. A plaster composition is applied on top of the insulation boards. For better adhesion of the plaster to the insulation, it is recommended to create roughness on the surface of the slabs using a carriage brush. For the first time plaster layer the reinforcing polymer mesh is “recessed”. Next, a second layer of plaster is applied, after which dries, the walls are painted in the desired color.
  5. Instead of plaster, it is possible to decorate the walls with siding, wood, and also use mounted systems for which a frame is pre-arranged.

If it is impossible to insulate from the outside, then, if necessary, insulate the walls from the inside. The work is carried out in a similar way, but a foiled polyethylene film is installed on top of the penoplex as a vapor barrier, then gypsum plasterboard sheets are attached, onto which wallpaper can later be glued. The lathing for hanging drywall is attached with dowels to the wall through the insulation.

Work on insulating balconies and loggias is carried out in the same way. The joints between the plates are taped. After installing a vapor barrier with PE foil film, we also glue the joints with tape - we create a kind of thermos.

If for finishing If you decide to use drywall, then you need to choose moisture-resistant gypsum board sheets. In addition to the walls, it is also necessary to insulate the loggia floor.

Thermal insulation of roofs is carried out either at the construction stage or during the reconstruction process, for example, when converting a cold attic into a living space.

  1. roofing material
  2. sheathing
  3. 3vapor-permeable moisture-resistant membrane
  4. penoplex insulation
  5. interior lining
  6. truss structure

In the first case, the insulation is laid on top of the rafters in a checkerboard pattern. A vapor-permeable membrane is spread over the penoplex. Expanded polystyrene is fixed with longitudinal slats with a thickness of at least 40 mm to ensure ventilation between the insulation and the roofing material, in increments of 300 mm.

Penoplex compared to its analogue - polystyrene foam - has a higher cost, but significantly exceeds it in strength. It is ideal for plastering systems.

If you are still in doubt about which material to choose for insulating the structures of your home, then read consumer reviews, perhaps this will help you decide.

If previously the range of thermal insulation materials was not rich enough, today buyers are faced with a wide selection of insulation materials with different properties and performance characteristics. This means that pick up suitable option Can a homeowner with any budget. Today, penoplex is rightfully recognized as one of the most popular materials, which is in great demand and occupies a leading position in the market of thermal insulation coatings. Today we will look in detail at what it is, find out where it is used and how this popular insulation is installed.

What is it?

Surely every person has heard about this at least once in his life. building material like penoplex. However, not every consumer knows what lies under this name.

Penoplex is a well-known trade name for high-quality extruded polystyrene. Today this material is the leader in the insulation market. They often cover walls, ceiling structures, roofing bases and even floors.

Features and production

Penoplex is high-quality foamed polystyrene. This type of material is produced by extrusion.

Like production process was developed more than half a century ago in American laboratories. Thus appeared completely new material, the structure of which consisted of closed microscopic cells. From the very beginning, their dimensions did not exceed 0.2 mm. In a single structure, these components created a neat and uniform surface without potholes or differences.

The granules of this polymer contain a special additive that has a foaming effect. This component is combined with granules under pressure or under heating conditions to a certain temperature. The result is a mass that is then passed through an extruder.

Foaming components (as a rule, they are represented by carbon dioxide or a mixture of light freons) are non-toxic and absolutely safe from an environmental point of view. In addition, these components are not flammable.

When the manufacturing process is completed, all auxiliary components are replaced with air from the environment.

The result is a high-tech thermal insulation material with excellent performance characteristics. With its use, your home becomes much warmer and more comfortable - a comfortable microclimate is created that you don’t want to leave.

Main distinctive features penoplex are:

  • low level of thermal conductivity;
  • good strength characteristics;
  • minimum level of moisture absorption.

As a rule, this insulation is packaged in film, which protects it from exposure to aggressive sun rays. Thanks to such packaging, such material can be easily stored outdoors. However, it is worth considering that even if there is plastic packaging, the product must be additionally protected from ultraviolet radiation.

Under the influence of UV rays, this insulation may lose the integrity of the top layer.

Advantages and disadvantages

Penoplex is a popular material that is in great demand. Its popularity is due to many positive qualities:

  • Penoplex is a hydrophobic material.
  • It is light in weight, so it is quite easy to work with it. Moreover, you will not spend a lot of money on transporting this material.
  • Penoplex has excellent strength characteristics. It is not so easy to damage this material - it is not susceptible to mechanical defects.
  • The composition of this thermal insulation coating is anti-corrosion, so it can be safely laid on bases consisting of a wide variety of materials.
  • The installation of penoplex can be started in almost any conditions. You don't have to wait for the right moment to start installing the slabs.

  • This insulation does not attract the attention of insects and rodents, which are usually quite difficult to get rid of.
  • Penoplex is an environmentally friendly and safe material - it does not affect negative influence on human health.
  • Penoplex is easy to install. With a minimum set of knowledge, you can install this insulation yourself.
  • Many buyers prefer this insulation because it has an affordable price.
  • Penoplex has minimal water absorption.
  • Penoplex does not cause allergic reactions.

  • This material is quite strong in compression.
  • This insulation is universal - modern manufacturers produce high-quality coatings intended not only for walls, but also for floors and roofing “pies”.
  • Penoplex is not subject to rotting, which once again confirms its durability and resistance to wear.
  • This material has a long service life.
  • Such extruded polystyrene can be used both in the construction of new and in the restoration of old buildings.

Penoplex is not an ideal heat-insulating material. It has its own weaknesses, which you should also be aware of if you decide to purchase such products for your home. Among them:

  • This material is flammable. It burns and actively supports combustion.
  • Penoplex does not withstand contact with solvents. Under their influence, polystyrene is destroyed and deformed.
  • Not all manufacturers offer penoplex at affordable prices. Many stores sell expensive products.

  • Another disadvantage of penoplex is its low vapor permeability (in certain situations). For example, if this material is installed incorrectly or exposed to unfavorable conditions, condensation may accumulate in it (from the outside). This is why this material becomes susceptible to the formation of fungus and mold. To avoid such problems, the room must be provided with good ventilation, otherwise normal air exchange will be hopelessly disrupted.
  • This material for high-quality thermal insulation cannot boast of good adhesion. It has an absolutely smooth surface, so gluing it to walls and ceilings is often not very convenient.

  • It is recommended to protect this thermal insulation material from direct sunlight. Under their influence, penoplex may undergo deformation or damage to the top layer.
  • To make extruded polystyrene more resistant to fire, special substances - fire retardants - are added to it during the production process. Materials with such additives become self-extinguishing, but when burning or smoldering, this insulation will emit black clouds of smoke containing toxic compounds.

Of course, penoplex has many more positive qualities than negative ones.

Many problems associated with this material can be avoided if it is installed correctly.

Specifications

The main characteristics of penoplex include:

  • low level of vapor permeability, the coefficient of which is 0.03 W/mºK;
  • high strength characteristics (both compression and bending);
  • low level of moisture absorption - no more than 0.2-0.4% by volume per day;
  • low degree of vapor permeability - the coefficient of this parameter ranges from 0.007 to 0.008 mg/mh·Pa);
  • service life exceeds 50 years;
  • combustion resistance;
  • environmental safety;
  • wide temperature range of application, which ranges from -50 to +75 degrees.

Thanks to its technical characteristics, penoplex has become a popular and sought-after material. It is difficult to damage or break. However, unfortunately, it is flammable.

Different types of penoplex belong to different flammability classes:

  • materials for roof insulation - class G3;
  • for wall insulation – G3;
  • for foundations – G4;
  • universal insulation – G4;
  • road materials - G4.

In addition, all of the listed thermal insulation materials have different compression densities, for example:

  • for roofing – 0.25 MPa;
  • for walls – 0.2 MPa;
  • for the foundation - 0.25 MPa;
  • universal – 0.2 MPa;
  • road – 0.50 MPa.

Extruded polystyrene foam boasts good resistance to various chemicals and materials. These include:

  • antiseptics designed to protect natural wood;
  • bitumen-based mixtures;
  • cement;
  • lime.

Penoplex can be destroyed by foreign materials that contain a component such as a solvent. Such products soften polystyrene, which then leads to its significant shrinkage.

When working with penoplex, you should avoid the following mixtures:

  • paint thinners;
  • coal tar (and any of its derivatives);
  • solvents such as acetone and ethyl acetate.

Brands and sizes

Currently, the most popular and High quality products with the following markings are common:

  • 45 C;

Let's look at each marking in detail:

  • Penoplex 31. This is a type of material that does not have the highest strength characteristics. Such coatings are not recommended for use in areas where there is heavy load. As a rule, such penoplex is used to insulate containers and pipelines.
  • 31 C. Materials that have this marking also cannot boast of sufficient strength. They are most often used to insulate walls inside a home. This penoplex differs from class 3 raw materials in its higher level of flammability.
  • 35. Thermal insulating material with this marking has good strength characteristics. In addition, it is characterized by excellent insulating qualities. Using such coatings, foundations, floors and pipes running underground are insulated.

  • 45. There is also penoplex marked 45. This type of material is used for insulating runways and constructing road surfaces. Moreover, such insulation materials are ideal for finishing floors in production areas and other similar premises.
  • 45 C. The material with this marking has almost the same parameters as Penoplex 45. It is quite reliable and durable. However, such insulation is more often used for finishing walls in industrial areas.
  • 75. This marking belongs to special materials that have a density of 40-53 kg/m3. Such raw materials are most often used in the construction of runways located at airfields.

Penoplex, belonging to the “standard” class with a density of 25-31 kg/m3, has the following technical characteristics:

  • width – 600;
  • length – 1200;

Comfort type material (28-33 kg/m3) has the following dimensional parameters:

  • width – 600;
  • length – 1200;
  • thickness – 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100.

Foundation material with a density of 29-33 kg/m3 has similar dimensions. As for the insulation “45” (35-47 kg/m3), its data is as follows:

  • width – 600;
  • length – 2400;
  • thickness – 40, 50, 60, 80, 100.

These parameters are indicative. First of all, the sizes of extruded polystyrene depend on the manufacturer who released them to the market.

Nowadays you can find non-standard canvases in stores.

Types and properties

Penoplex is a popular and in demand material. It is represented by many modifications, each of which has its own markings and designations. Currently, there are several varieties of this thermal insulation coating.

"Wall"

The density of such extruded polystyrene can range from 25 to 32 kg/m3. This heat insulating material Perfectly suitable for installation on external and internal ceilings. In addition, penoplex “wall” can be used in the design of partitions and plinths. Thanks to this material, the sound insulation characteristics of the room are increased.

"Foundation"

No less popular today is a material such as penoplex “foundation”. Its density varies from 29 to 33 kg/m3. You can safely use this coating if you want to insulate the foundation and upper part of the basement. This material is highly dense and water resistant. In addition, this insulation is often used for thermal insulation of septic tanks that have a significant depression.

"Roof"

Another common and popular material is foam roofing. Similar products are produced directly for insulation of rafters or flat types roofs Also, material from the “roofing” category can be used to insulate attic structures. The density of this brand, as a rule, ranges from 28 to 33 kg/m3. This material is lightweight and does not place a large load on the roof sheathing.

"Comfort"

Comfort products are in great demand today. Such materials have a density of 25-35 kg/m3. They are used to insulate walls in apartments. For example, this could be the area of a balcony or loggia. It is acceptable to use such a coating in baths and saunas.

"Geo"

Penoplex "geo" is an alternative to materials belonging to the "foundation" class. Such coatings are more often used in industrial and civil construction work. It is worth noting that slabs of this insulation are often used for cladding floors, foundations and other similar

"Warp"

Penoplex from this category has an optimal density that allows it to be used in a wide variety of construction work. Such insulation is laid on the floor, walls and roof bases. Penoplex “base” is popular due to its durability and versatility of use - it is often used in both civil and industrial construction.

"Pitched roof"

Penoplex was developed specifically for roof insulation " pitched roof" This coating is ideal for installation on the foundations of low-rise buildings. As a rule, this thermal insulation material has a thickness of 10 and 15 cm.

"Facade"

The name of this type of penoplex speaks for itself. It is used for insulation of plinths, facades, external parts of ceilings and partitions. This material has a special milled surface on which plaster can be applied much easier and more reliably. The thickness of the penoplex “facade” is 20-100 mm.

Scope of application

Penoplex is recognized as one of the most popular and high-tech materials, so it is used in many cases:

  • This type of thermal insulation material is used to insulate walls, roofing bases and floors.
  • Many buyers choose penoplex for foundation insulation.
  • There are also materials that are used in road construction and the construction of runways.
  • Some types of insulation are installed in balconies, loggias, baths and saunas.

The main thing is to choose the material of the appropriate class and type.

What can be replaced?

There are times when penoplex is not available in stores for some reason. Slightly less often, consumers themselves refuse to purchase this material due to high cost or flammability. Many people wonder what can replace this insulation in such situations.

A good alternative to penoplex is a domestic material called “Technoplex”. This insulation is in great demand today and is a strong competitor to the branded products of the Penoplex brand. It is good because it fits seamlessly on bases made of a variety of materials. In addition, it can be safely laid on the floor, since it can be combined with a “warm floor” system.

Currently, Technoplex is produced using special nanotechnology. In this case, graphite is used, which significantly reduces the level of thermal conductivity of the insulation, but at the same time increases the rigidity and wear resistance of the plates.

This material has a silver-gray color, which distinguishes it from penoplex. However, Technoplex has the same positive qualities as extruded polystyrene. That is why these materials are interchangeable.

"Technoplex" is manufactured in a tile format. Such thermal insulation materials can have the following thickness:

  • 100 mm;
  • 50 mm;
  • 40 mm;
  • 30 mm;
  • 20 mm.

At the same time, slabs of such insulation are produced with grooves and tenons, with the help of which they can be easily and quickly assembled, forming a neat, seamless coating. Due to the absence of gaps on such an insulating layer, “cold bridges” do not appear on the bases.

After installation is completed, material such as Technoplex must be covered with decorative finishing materials.

This requirement is explained by the fact that aggressive ultraviolet rays can negatively affect the quality and integrity of the insulation, so it must be “hidden” behind other coatings.

Another popular analogue of penoplex is “Polyspen”. This insulation is also produced in Russia. It is currently available in three variations, having various technical characteristics, which include thermal conductivity, strength, as well as the level of flammability and compression:

  • "Polyspen 45";
  • "Polyspen 35";
  • "Polyspen universal."

This analogue of penoplex contains a fire retardant. Thanks to this component, “Polyspen” is less flammable. Such materials are produced in the form of slabs with a thickness of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 200 mm. Thanks to this choice, it will be possible to select insulation for a specific area.

Penoplex can also be replaced with the following thermal insulation materials:

  • Styrex. This material is quite strong and durable. Its thermal conductivity level is slightly lower than that of penoplex.
  • "Extrol". This is another one polystyrene foam insulation, which goes through extrusion during the manufacturing process. It has much in common with penoplex, but is produced in the form of cylindrical elements, convenient for insulating water supply systems.
  • Foam plastic. Foam plastic (without extrusion) is often used instead of penoplex. It is much cheaper than extruded polystyrene, but is less strong and durable.

If the insulation will be constantly exposed to high temperatures, then it is better to give preference to mineral wool. This type of thermal insulation material is one of the most popular and in demand today.

On my own mineral wool - This is a fibrous insulation of inorganic origin. This insulation has many positive qualities, for example:

  • fairly high thermal insulation performance;
  • waterproof;
  • resistance to aggressive chemicals;
  • good air exchange;
  • excellent sound insulation characteristics;
  • fire resistance;
  • long service life (25-50 years);
  • environmental friendliness.

Installation technology

You can lay penoplex on a particular base with your own hands. To do this, you do not need to have a wealth of experience and cunning knowledge. The main thing is to stick simple technology and use high quality materials.

It was previously mentioned that installation of extruded polystyrene foam can be done both inside and outside the home.

Let us consider step by step how to install this material in all of the above cases.

Inside the building

Penoplex can be installed in the interior of the house. All work is done as follows:

  • First you need to carefully prepare the base for laying insulation. IN in this case you need to remove the previous materials from the walls (any wallpaper, paint and varnish coatings, etc.), without missing a single area.
  • Next, the bases need to be protected from fungus and mold. If they have already appeared, then you should get rid of them. For this, it is recommended to use special antiseptic compounds. After this it is worth carrying out sanitization. To do this, you can use almost any product that has an antibacterial effect.
  • Pay attention to the evenness of the bases. So, the walls should not have significant differences and potholes. You need to get rid of any defects - level the bases, and then prime them with a high-quality composition.

  • Next, you can proceed to assembling the base profile. Such structures are most often used to facilitate the installation of insulation. In addition, profile parts will protect the thermal insulation coating from adverse external factors.
  • The base profile should be attached to the base using dowel nails. In order for the insulation to fit more tightly to the ceilings, they can be supplemented with spacer washers.
  • Be sure to ensure that the width of the profile matches the thickness of the penoplex.
  • Using joining plates, the final components of the structure must be joined to each other. Don't forget to leave a small gap between them (about 2 cm).
  • Now you can attach the polystyrene foam boards. Apply a layer of glue to the penoplex (around the perimeter of the slab and in its center).

  • Many craftsmen recommend not to skimp at this stage and to thoroughly coat the entire surface with an adhesive solution. polystyrene foam board. After this, the insulation must be pressed against the profile. If protruding particles of glue appear on the materials, they must be removed immediately.
  • If there are small gaps between the materials, you can get rid of them by filling them with inserts from pieces of expanded polystyrene. Not everyone uses polyurethane foam in this situation, since such sealing can cause cracks to appear.
  • After this, it remains to make the final fastening of the thermal material to the base. When the glue has completely dried (usually this takes about 3 days), work can continue. You need to secure the insulation with mushroom dowels. Hardware must be placed in the middle of the slabs, as well as along their perimeter. However, here it is necessary to calculate that in the end all the sheets of penoplex will be connected.

It is worth keeping in mind that insulating a home from the inside is not always appropriate or practical.

The main disadvantage of such work is the reduction in living and free space due to the thickness of the materials, as well as the profile design.

Outside

According to experts, external insulation of a house is more practical and convenient. At the same time, free space is not hidden, and dirt and dust remaining during work do not accumulate inside the premises.

For external insulation, penoplex with a thickness of 80-100 mm is most often used. The process of installing thermal insulation material in this case is in many ways similar to internal insulation.

First, the façade of the house needs to be leveled. If there are cracks or potholes on it, then you must get rid of them - repair them and then prime them.

Penoplex is glued to the façade base in the same way as for internal insulation of a home. Fastening to dowels occurs in a similar way.

If you want to plaster the facade in the future, then preparatory work you need to glue the reinforced mesh. If you want to decorate the house with siding or PVC panels, then you need to take care of the vertical guides in advance in order to securely fasten them. In this case, an additional layer of vapor barrier material is not required.

On the roof

Penoplex is ideal for strengthening the roof. Not only beginners, but also experienced craftsmen turn to this insulation.

  • Insulation boards can only be laid after they have been prepared frame structures roofs(lathing). On the lower section of the rafters near the insulated area, you need to nail a block. Its thickness should be the same as the thickness of the insulation. This part will play the role of a starting rail. This element must be set to equal distance from the edge (along all rafter supports).
  • Starting from the starting rail, you need to lay extruded polystyrene slabs. This should be done in a checkerboard pattern. The thickness of the laid layer, first of all, depends on the geographical location of the facility under construction. However, experts always recommend laying insulation not in 1, but in 2-3 layers. At the same time, it is very important to properly seal all joints.

  • In this case, the insulation can be secured using self-tapping screws with mushroom caps to make the structure more reliable. The seams should be additionally taped. After this, bars are packed over the insulation. They should be arranged from top to bottom. This way you will get a high-quality ventilated gap. It is needed for free air circulation.
  • After this, you should install the sheathing intended directly for installation roofing material. For this purpose, a structure assembled from bars secured in accordance with a certain step is quite suitable.
  • You can also use solid coatings made from OSB. Such bases are ideal for installation soft species roofs. Thermal insulating material should be attached tightly to the ridge.

The gap should only be left when installing the roof itself.

Extruded polystyrene foam (EPS) is available in slab form. It is often called penoplex. But you should know that penoplex is a brand (the same as “Giprok” - drywall or “Macroflex” - polyurethane foam). The structure of the insulation under consideration is similar to the structure of conventional polystyrene foam. Being a subspecies, penoplex is distinguished by its higher density and strength, and has a fine-celled, homogeneous structure consisting of almost completely closed cells. This material is best view polystyrene plastics. EPS (penoplex) is made by extrusion, as a result of which polystyrene beads melt, forming a homogeneous mass, which is poured into a mold, where it cools. In this article we will take a detailed look at penoplex insulation, its technical characteristics, advantages, applications and installation features.

Technical characteristics of expanded polystyrene (EPS)

Penoplex is produced by exposing polystyrene granules to high temperature and pressure. By adding a mixture of carbon dioxide and light freon at the next stage, a porous mass is obtained, which is then squeezed out of the extrusion plant. After manufacturing the slabs in the cells, the residual freon is relatively quickly replaced by ambient air.

Penoplex is distinguished among materials for thermal insulation by the following characteristics:

  • Low thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of penoplex in comparison with other thermal insulation materials is significantly lower and amounts to 0.03 W/m K.
  • High strength for compression and bending. Extrusion allows you to achieve uniformity of the material structure. Evenly distributed cells improve the strength characteristics of the material, which does not change its dimensions even under heavy loads.
  • Low water absorption(no more than 0.2 - 0.4% by volume in 24 hours). During the tests, XPS boards were left in water for a month. In this case, the liquid was absorbed in small quantities only for the first 10 days, after which the material stopped taking up moisture. At the end of the period, the amount of water in the slabs did not exceed 0.6 percent of their total volume.
  • Low vapor permeability(vapor permeability coefficient 0.007-0.008 mg/m·h·Pa). A layer of slabs made of this material, only 2 centimeters thick, has the same vapor permeability as a layer of roofing felt.
  • Durability(service life - more than 50 years). Repeated cycles of freezing and thawing of the slabs showed that all the characteristics of the material remained unchanged after testing.
  • Flame resistant. In the manufacture of this material, freons are used, which are safe and non-flammable. They are not poisonous and do not destroy the ozone layer.
  • Environmental safety. Most chemicals used in construction are not able to react with penoplex. Exception: toluene, xylene, benzene and similar hydrocarbons; formalin and formaldehyde; ethers, both simple and complex; gasoline, kerosene; oil-based paints and other organic solvents.
  • Wide operating temperature range(-50ºС to +75ºС). However, if exposed to excessive heat, the material may melt and ignite.

For clarity, let us highlight all the physical and mechanical properties in the form of a table:

Expanded polystyrene is usually sold in packages of 0.25 - 0.3 m³. Depending on the thickness of the sheet, the surface area that can be covered using one package will also vary.

Application and types of penoplex

Considering that penoplex has a number of advantages, its scope of application is quite extensive. EPS serves as an excellent insulation material both indoors and outdoors. It is perfect for apartments, houses, cottages and other buildings. Penoplex can be used to insulate roofs, attics, and balconies, in any climatic region without the use of an additional moisture-proof layer. Since the material practically does not absorb water, it is quite possible to use it in an environment with high humidity. At the same time, its thermal conductivity remains almost unchanged. EPS sheets are available for sale various thicknesses, and depending on specific requirements, you can always choose the best option.

In addition to a variety of sizes, extruded polystyrene foam is available in several types depending on density and application. Let's look at each type:

Installation technology of polystyrene insulation boards

Insulation of external, internal walls and other structures using extruded polystyrene is carried out in several stages. Let's look at each of them:

  • Preparatory stage consist of preparing the walls for insulation, cleaning them from dirt, dust, old finishing materials, and paint coatings. In case of large unevenness, it is recommended to level the surface using a plaster mixture (and other methods depending on the design) and treat it with an antifungal compound.
  • Fixation using special adhesive facade compounds. The adhesive is applied directly to the insulating board using a comb.
  • Mechanical fastening made using dowels.
  • Installation of facade mesh. For better adhesion of the glue to the insulation, you can create roughness on the surface of the slabs. The first plaster layer of facade glue is used to fix the reinforcing polymer mesh. Next, a second layer of plaster is applied, after which has dried, the walls are covered with decorative plaster (optional) and painted.
  • Instead of plaster It is possible to decorate the walls with siding, wood, as well as the use of ventilated facades.

EPS installation technology

Thermal insulation of roofs produced either at the construction stage or during the reconstruction process, for example, when converting a cold attic into a living space. In this case, the insulation is laid on the base in several layers (the joints of the top layer should not coincide with the joints of the bottom). Next, a vapor-permeable membrane is spread over the penoplex. The resulting cake is secured with longitudinal slats with a thickness of at least 40 mm to ensure ventilation between the insulation and the roofing material.

Having examined penoplex insulation, it can be noted that compared to analogues, it has a higher cost. But, on the other hand, ease of use, greater strength and excellent properties cover this drawback. Therefore, when choosing thermal insulation material for your home, additionally read consumer reviews and consider all possible alternatives.

To ensure a comfortable stay in your home at any time of the year, you should immediately take care of its high-quality thermal insulation. She will help out by making the house warmer in winter time, and in the summer it is cooler. The construction market provides a large selection of materials for thermal insulation, and each consumer can choose an option to suit their taste. The most acceptable insulation in terms of price, quality and ease of installation can be called penoplex.

Features and Specifications

Penoplex boards are similar in properties to polystyrene foam, but have a number of advantages. The main thing is their high strength and density of the material. Of course, some still prefer older methods to insulate walls. For example, brick. It is worth mentioning that penoplex with a thickness of 20 mm replaces a brick wall, for which this figure is 370 mm. And if you compare slabs with a thickness of 50 mm, the superiority will be even greater: they correspond to brickwork of 925 mm.

Three types of material under consideration can be distinguished:

  • "Penoplex 31". Due to its poor resistance to compression, this type is mainly used for insulating various pipes.
  • "Penoplex 35". The most popular type, due to the presence of a special substance that increases the material’s resistance to combustion. It is well suited for thermal insulation of building envelopes and foundations.
  • "Penoplex 45". Compared to other options, this one is the most durable and can withstand high loads. In addition to building houses, Penoplex 45 is often used to create roads. This solution prevents swelling of the road surface when freezing, this is especially important when operating runways. Presented in a narrower range (40–150 mm).

In addition to this classification, there is another division of penoplex. The name of the insulation indicates the scope of its application, which makes the choice easier.

"Penoplex Comfort"

Most universal insulation. Suitable for foundations, walls and roofs. Insulation of this category is especially in demand for thermal insulation of balconies and loggias. The main disadvantage of the material is its high flammability; it is not allowed to be used in places where there may be open fire. Its main parameters correspond to insulation of category “31”.

"Penoplex Foundation" (series "F")

It is used for insulation of underground buildings, foundations of any buildings, as well as the basement of the house. It combines many excellent characteristics: minimal water absorption (especially important in areas with shallow groundwater), resistance to heavy loads ( long time does not subsidence, more than 50 years). "Penoplex F" is also used for improving garden paths on a sand-cement base.

If our ancestors who built cities had such wonderful material at their disposal, they would have been lucky enough to build houses that were insured against their subsequent subsidence. Cracks would not appear in the walls of buildings, and the foundation would not collapse under the influence of soil waters.

When arranging and protecting the base with penoplex foam of the “F” series, it would be useful to take care of strengthening the floor screed of the house. It is important to highlight two points here:

  1. Strengthening the screed with reinforcement.
  2. Using Penoplex Foundation sheets at the stage of pouring the screed. The size of the sheets will dictate the area of the house: the larger the material, the fewer joining seams, and therefore the fewer “cold bridges” through which heat will escape from the house. The concrete floor obtained in this way will provide increased comfort. It will have low thermal conductivity thanks to penoplex, which means it will retain heat inside the house.

The blind area of the house can also be protected using Penoplex Foundation. It is better to spend money once than to watch with tears in your eyes how your home is destroyed by heavy rains.

"Penoplex Roofing" (series "K")

Technical characteristics are the same as those of Penoplex Foundation, only the compressive strength coefficient is lower (material density is 28–33 kg per m3). However, the roof does not experience the same loads as the foundation. Due to its low density, the material does not weigh down the rafter system.

"Penoplex Wall" (series "C")

"Penoplex Geo"

This material is highly popular among industrial organizations. It is ideal for floors under cement-sand screed. The thickness of the slabs varies from 20 to 100 mm.

The table shows the main types of insulation and its characteristics:

After studying the basic parameters and properties of foam boards, you can determine its other characteristics and operating conditions. The main technical characteristics of penoplex include:

  • Low water absorption (0.4% when in contact with a humid environment for 24 hours, or 0.5% when in water for about 1 month). Water can penetrate only in places where the penoplex itself is damaged, which is formed during installation.
  • Low thermal conductivity (coefficient is 0.03 W/ (m*K)). It is provided due to its cellular structure and lack of water absorption.
  • Low vapor permeability of the material (0.007–0.008).
  • Durability (more than 50 years) - not susceptible to fungus and rot, but this is only provided that there were no violations of technology during the installation of the slabs.

  • Resistance to thermal factors (provided by the content of penoplex fire retardants, which reduce the flammability of the material).
  • Wide operating temperature range (from -100 to +75 degrees).
  • Resistance to mechanical factors - resists compression. Under heavy loads (higher than allowed performance characteristics a certain type of penoplex), small dents up to 1 mm deep may appear.
  • Due to their light weight, foam boards are easy to install. Due to their weight, they can easily be raised to great heights, and they themselves do not burden the structure.

Despite these advantages of the material, it is worth highlighting the existing disadvantages:

  • Despite the material’s sufficient resistance to fire, it still burns (flammability level G3–G4), and toxic gas is released;
  • The material is not resistant to direct sunlight. When it comes into contact with UV rays, penoplex can change its characteristics and at the same time emit toxic fumes.
  • Penoplex does not perform a soundproofing function; this must be taken into account when insulating a house.

Standard parameters

Penoplex is available in the form of a slab. The dimensions of these foam boards are standardized, with the length varying between 1200 and 2400 mm, with a width of 600 mm. They vary in thickness, which ranges from 20 mm to 10 cm (in increments of 10–30 mm).

The thickness of the material is determined by its area of application. So, “Penoplex Foundation” starts from 50 mm. To insulate internal walls, the thickness of the slabs ranges from 2 to 10 cm. When working with internal walls It is worth considering that the area of the room will be reduced. Therefore, it is worth choosing slabs with this indicator of 2–3 cm.

For external buildings, for example, for a roof, a sufficient thickness is 4–6 cm. To insulate external walls, this indicator for slabs should be in the range of 8–12 cm. The density of the material depends on the degree of mechanical pressure on the slab.

How to choose?

To choose which penoplex you need, you need to decide what kind of work it is needed for - insulating walls, roofing or foundations. There are a number of parameters to consider.

By purpose

  • Penoplex Comfort is well suited for insulating foundations, walls, and floors.
  • To insulate walls (both external and internal), plinths, partitions to effectively save heat and reduce heating costs - you should choose Penoplex Wall.
  • For the construction of the foundation of a house or the construction of premises for a basement, “Penoplex Foundation” is suitable, which has high water-repellent properties and increased strength.
  • If roof insulation is necessary, there is Penoplex Roofing. It is suitable for both flat and pitched structures. Due to the lightness of the material building structure does not become heavier.

By density

Before purchasing a thermal insulation material, the buyer thinks about its density, because this indicator can be used to judge the strength of the material, its weight and thermal conductivity.

  • The density of Penoplex Comfort is in the range from 25 to 32 kg/m3.
  • A less versatile type, which has higher strength, can be called “Penoplex Roofing”. The density of the material is 28–33 kg/m3.
  • For Penoplex Foundation this figure is 29–37 kg/m3. For this type of material, this parameter is especially important. The degree of resistance to mechanical factors (compression) depends on it.
  • “Penoplex 45” has the highest density; it ranges from 35 to 47 kg/m3.

By sheet thickness

  • The thickness of Penoplex Comfort varies from 20 to 100 mm. Each type has its own purpose, for example: penoplex with a thickness of 50 mm is mainly used for insulating the foundation or blind area.
  • The thickness of the “F” series penoplex starts from 50 mm; these are the overall dimensions that should be used for insulating underground buildings and foundations in any house.

  • When purchasing penoplex, you should pay attention to the labeling of the product, the safety of the packaging, and the technical characteristics of the material.
  • It is worth buying 10% more material from the measured initial quantity, in case it is rejected during use.
  • It is necessary to work with the material carefully, since if its integrity is damaged, water may get inside, which will shorten the service life of the material. It is better to use the services of professionals or read the instructions yourself and work with penoplex correctly.
