Why do speed tests have different results? Speedtest speed test - how to calculate real internet speed and find out if your ISP is cheating on you.

ISPs boast about maximum data rates, but what's the real story? The speed depends on many factors: time and day of the week, traffic load, technical condition servers, the state of communication lines and even the weather. When buying a certain package of services, you want to be sure that the money is not paid in vain, and the Internet speed corresponds to the declared one.

We will check with the help of special services on the network, because this is the most convenient, affordable and accurate way to determine the speed of the Internet. Speed is measured from the computer to the server running the service. Accordingly, the indicators from different services will differ.

Measured:

  • incoming speed, i.e. the one with which we download from the Internet
  • outgoing - the speed of sending information, i.e. when data is transmitted from our computer, for example, when you send an email or file, or when a torrent is opened.

As a rule, these two indicators differ, for me - up to three times, depending on what to test. The outbound speed is usually slower because it is used less frequently.

The baud rate is measured in kilo- or mega-BITS. One byte contains 8 bits plus an overhead pair of bits. This means that with a result of 80 Mbit / s, the actual speed is 8 MB per second. Each speed test consumes about 10-30 megabytes of traffic!

Ookla SpeedTest

The best service for today, sharpened for testing bandwidth internet connections. Precisely determines the maximum possible speed for your computer at the moment.

To start the test, press the big button "START". The service will determine the optimal server and start transmitting data. During testing, the current speed is displayed. It usually grows as the process progresses.

Pay attention to what indicators are determined:

Very exemplary good values for wired internet:

  • "Download" - incoming speed: 30-70 Mbps
  • "Download" - upstream speed: 10-30 Mbps
  • "PING": 3-30 ms

For mobile 3G / 4G internet:

  • incoming: 5-10 Mbps
  • outgoing: 1-2 Mbps
  • PING: 15-50 ms

PING - important indicator, this is the time it takes to establish a connection. The closer the server is, the lower the value and the better.

SpeedTest has servers all over the globe, so your location and the closest server are determined first, then the test data is transmitted. The measured speed is the maximum possible for your computer at a given time. This is achieved due to the fact that the server for data exchange is located in your city or region, and the closer the server is to the computer, the higher the speed. But you can choose any server!

Thus, it turns out that we will get a speed that is not achievable for most sites on the internet, well, because their servers are located further away. Thanks to this "trick" I got the best results. The obtained figures can be compared with those declared by the provider, but the real speed on the Internet is still lower.

The speedtest has applications for smartphones:

After testing, it is provided permalink on the results and on the picture that you can brag about on social networks

By checking the speed several times in a row, you will notice that it is different each time. It depends on the load of the provider and the server. Therefore, I recommend that you run the test several times and calculate the average speed, this will be more correct.

After registration, the history of all checks becomes available and the ability to compare them, which is also important. You can run a test from time to time and then look at the history for a year, and in a graphical representation. It will immediately become clear where your provider is developing (or, on the contrary, it will turn out that it is time to change it).

SpeedTest app for Windows 10

Using the application, you can find out what the quality of your Internet connection is.

Communication quality differs from speed. For example, a file may be downloading at a breakneck speed and suddenly the download is interrupted, you have to start over. After the end of the test in the application, you need to click on the results:

To determine the quality of communication, the following indicators are used:

  • Ripple (jitter) - phase ripple, the less the better. Up to 5 ms.
  • Packet loss - how many percent of the data was lost and had to be re-sent. Should be 0%

Internet meter from Yandex company

Unlike Speedtest, Yandex's service measures the speed of data transfer between your laptop and its servers, only its own. It turns out that here the speed should turn out to be lower than in the speed test, but it is closer to reality for working in RuNet.

We press the "Measure" button and wait a while while Yandex tests. The time will depend on the speed itself, and if it is too low, or there are interruptions in communication, then the test may freeze or end with an error.

Yandex tests in the following way: it downloads and uploads a test file several times, and then calculates the average value. Strong dips are cut off for better accuracy. However, after each re-check I got different results with an error of 10-20%, which, in principle, is quite normal, since speed - the indicator is not constant and jumps all the time. It was during the day, and then I tested it early in the morning and the result jumped with a difference of up to 50%.

Yandex Internet meter also shows the IP address and detailed technical information about the browser.

Service 2ip.ru

I have been using this wonderful service for a long time. The 2ip.ru service will also show you, give complete information at this address, check any of your files for viruses, tell you a lot of interesting things about any site on the Internet (IP, site engine, presence of viruses, distance to the site, its availability, etc.).

2ip determines your provider, the optimal server and checks the speed between you and this server, just like SpeedTest.Net, but 2ip has fewer servers, so the PING will be higher. But there are statistics on average speed in your city and your provider. With each repeated test, my speed changed insignificantly - within 10%.

Another service, works in HTML5, without Flash or Java, however, like the previous services.

OpenSpeedTest will help you measure the bandwidth between Western servers. You will notice that the pings are even bigger.

Works stably, averages the values obtained, fairly predictable and repeatable results.

The service is not of particular interest for testing high-speed Internet, but it may be of interest to those who use a modem or another not the most fast internet... The results show the average results for different network interfaces (modem, coaxial cable, Ethernet, Wi-Fi) and yours for comparison.

There is a percentage accuracy of measurements. It is calculated based on whether the speed was stable during the data transfer, or jumped strongly. The more stable, the higher the accuracy.

Separately, I would like to note the testing method using. To do this, we take a torrent with a large number of seeds and see the real speed of data reception.

For everyone, before testing it is desirable:

  • Close all programs except the browser (especially those that can download something) and leave only one tab of the speed testing service active
  • Wait until the end or stop all downloads in your browser!
  • Check if any program is using the network. To do this, open the "Task Manager" using the "Ctrl + Shift + Esc" buttons, go to the "Performance" tab and click on the network adapter. If there are several of them, then there will be only one with the data:

See how much data was sent and transferred for last minute... If no program uses the network, then there should be units-tens, maximum one hundred kbps. Otherwise, reboot and check again.

Summing up

Finally, I want to say that not a single service was able to determine the maximum possible indicators for my Internet connection. I say this because when downloading from torrents, my speed reaches 10 MB / s. This is due to downloading from various sources scattered all over the world at the same time (this is how torrents work). And services work with only one server, albeit a powerful one. Therefore, I can recommend the uTorrent program as a tester, but it works on active distributions, where there are dozens of seeders.

Do not forget that the low speed may be due to, or due to a weak Wi-Fi adapter. In the comments, please write your results and do not forget to upload the article to social networks.

Video review:

If your Internet pages are loading for a long time or video on YouTube slows down, you should first of all look at the speed of your Internet connection. How to see the Internet speed on Windows 7 or Windows 10 is discussed below.

Note! Certain processes can affect the accuracy of the results. Before testing, turn off video, music, file downloads, etc.

Windows standard tools

First of all, you need to know what speed your provider provides you. You can use standard system tools for viewing.

Advice! If there is an agreement with a provider nearby, then you can look at the speed of the Internet connection in it.

  1. On the toolbar, click the PMC on the Internet connection icon.
  2. Open Network & Internet Settings.
  3. Next, go to the "Network and Sharing Center".
  4. By clicking on the "Ethernet" icon, see the connection speed.

Internet resources

Now let's move on to online services that give us the opportunity to see the speed of the Internet connection in a few clicks.

Yandex Internetometer

This is a popular service from Yandex that most users use.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult. All actions take place automatically.

This service is popular all over the world, not only in Russia. It quite accurately determines the maximum download speed limit and indicates the ping.

It's worth noting that the results are pretty accurate. It is not for nothing that the service has gained popularity all over the world.

2ip

A site with a huge number of possibilities. Starting from checking IP and Ports, ending with checking passwords for vulnerabilities. The most functional site of the entire RuNet.

Additionally, the site will show your location, browser, IP and provider.

The service is designed for German users, but this does not prevent us from using it.

After finishing you will be able to see the speed, ping and location.

The scheme is outrageously simple: Turn on the timer and upload the file to the server. Then from there our downloaded file. Divide the resulting download and upload times by the file size. The result will show the speed of our Internet.

Of course, no one uses a stopwatch now. For this, there is a whole bunch of online services to check internet speed.

But there are a number of nuances that must be taken into account. Namely: the distance to the server to which we will actually send our file. The fact is that the further this server is geographically located, the longer the signal will reach. Therefore, the speed of the Internet (in our general understanding) will be different. Before starting testing, I recommend that you clearly define for yourself what exactly and what parameter you want to measure.

  1. Ping (Ping) This is the period of time during which one packet of the Internet signal passes from your computer to the server, and returns back. What is ping measured for? In theory, ping shows maximum speed signal transmission which can be obtained in this case. In other words, it shows the maximum possible speed of your Internet when transferring information to a specific server. Therefore, the lower this indicator (lower ping), the better.
  2. File upload speed. Shows the time it took to transfer data to the server.
  3. Download (upload) speed of the file. Shows the time it takes to upload a file to.

Here it is necessary to take into account very important nuance: The download speed can be very different from the file upload speed. It depends, first of all, on your provider. And what type of internet is he using.

For reference. There are two main types: symmetric internet and asymmetric internet. On a symmetric Internet, the speed of data transmission to the server is equal to the speed of receiving data from the server. In asymmetric, the speed of transmission and reception of information can be different. As a rule, asymmetric Internet is widely practiced by mobile and satellite providers. When, for example, you can download a file at a "normal" speed, but to send you need to "wait half a day".

  1. Distance to the test server (in theory, the closer the better)
  2. Ping (less is better)
  3. File download speed (the faster the better)
  4. File download speed (the lower the better)

Many who have already encountered Internet speed testing services have noticed that the result of these tests quite often differs from the tariff plan (the speed provided by the provider). Most, without delving into the details and subtleties of the services, prefer to believe the indicated speed test results on, perhaps for the first time, an open site. And then calls to the provider's technical support begin with complaints and claims. Often, long negotiations with technical support end in nothing - it is difficult or scary to follow the recommendations of the technical staff. And, as a result, the client is not satisfied.

We conducted a small test of the most popular services for checking the speed of the Internet connection and decided to find out which of the services should still give the highest preference, and also tried to find out why such different results show speed measurements. On each of the sites, we carried out from 3 to 5 measurements, citing the best indicators here.

For testing, we used a simple system unit with a dual-core processor, 2 GB random access memory established operating system Windows 7. is not installed on the computer, the firewall is disabled. All components and modules (including the flash player) have been updated. Used browsers: Opera, Chrome, Fire Fox, Safari, testing was carried out in each of them. The network card is the most inexpensive, with an interface speed of 100 Mbit / s (Full duplex). The computer was connected with a 3-meter twisted pair cable to a Cisco L2 switch with a 1 Gb / s port (auto) and an external interface (Internet channel) 2 Gb / s (LACP bonding mode 2).

In total, an analogue of broadband Internet access was obtained with a speed limited by the bandwidth of the computer's network card - 100 Mbit / s.

Speedtest.net by Ookla - Global Speed Checker

Speedtest.Net- probably one of the first and most popular services for checking the basic parameters of the network. The test itself was created on the basis of flash technology, which, on the one hand, is beautiful, convenient and clear, on the other hand it can fail - an incorrectly installed flash-player on your computer, or the flash-browser module is not able to fully implement speed testing, and , as a result - measurement errors.

The web interface of the http://www.speedtest.net/ page looks like a map with the ability to select a server with which to test.

When you open the www.speedtest.net page, the service detects your location. It is very useful in this service to have a choice of the server with which you need to test, because the fewer intermediate nodes between your computer and the server, the more accurate the measurement results will be.

Before testing begins, a ping test occurs - the server response time to your request to it.

Immediately after measuring the ping, the download speed is measured - Download.

After measuring your incoming speed, the service will automatically start measuring the outgoing speed - Upload, the speed at which you can upload and transfer files to the Internet.

Outgoing speed testing - Upload.

After performing all the tests - ping, incoming and outgoing speed, the results will appear on the screen with a proposal to repeat the test ( TEST AGAIN), or select another server ( NEW SERVER) to check Internet settings.

Test result.

Further, using the service Speedtes.Net, we have chosen another, the most remote server in Kiev, the data to which will pass through several data centers, by this we will show the influence of intermediate nodes on the accuracy of testing measurement.

Choosing a remote server located in Kiev.

Speed testing with a server located in Kiev.

Here it is worth paying attention to the increase in ping to 13 ms, which indicates data delays on intermediate servers and routers located between us and Kiev.

Result for Speedtest.net by Ookla - 95/95 Mbps with our bandwidth of 100 Mbps, this is the most accurate result.

If you need to do testing with our server located in Torez, go here.

Bandwidthplace.com - speed check for all devices

Bandwidthplace.Com- just like Speedtest.Net uses flash technology to measure network speed. Everything is more modest here, the choice of servers (button Select Server) for testing is small, only about 15, the location of which says that the service is focused on America and Japan. The closest to us was Frankfurt (Germany).

The result of the check, to put it mildly, is none. With our actual channel width of 100 Mbit / s, the Bandwidthplace.com service showed only 11 Mbit / s - 10 times lower than our real speed... Moreover, we did not manage to check our outgoing speed using this service.

Bandwidthplace.com speed testing.

It's all to blame for the remoteness of the server and a large number of intermediate nodes to it. We counted 8 pieces.

Trace route to server - Bandwidthplace.com.

Result for Bandwidthplace.com - 11 / - Mbps with our bandwidth of 100 Mbps - this service is not suitable for our region.

2ip.Ru - Portal of network services

2ip.Ru- probably one of the first Russian-language services for the Internet. Among them is a speed check service.

Before checking, the service prompts you to enter your speed by tariff plan, for further evaluation - declared / actual.

Not choosing the closest server affected the results.

The result of the speed of the Internet connection is 2ip.Ru.

Despite the fact that the 2ip.ru service is focused on Russian-speaking network users, it itself is located in Germany, so the service is more suitable for the western regions of the CIS countries (Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg ...). Due to the fact that between us and the 2ip.ru service there is big number knots, it is not suitable for accurate measurements.

The result for 2ip.Ru is 27/7 Mbps

Pr-Cy.Ru - Analysis and verification of network resources

Pr-Cy.Ru is another popular Russian-language service that specializes in website analysis, the speed check service on it is a nice addition to the rest of the services.

On the speed test page there is a map with which you can select the preferred server with the fewest nodes on the way to it for the most accurate result.

Speed check page - Pr-Cy.Ru.

After pressing the button "Start Internet Speed Check Test", first the server response time (ping) is measured, after which the incoming and then outgoing Internet speed will be automatically checked.

Internet speed testing on the Pr-Cy.Ru website.

Internet speed test result.

The test result was disappointing, deviations of more than 20%. Most likely, the owners of the resource Pr-Cy.Ru do not prioritize the accuracy of measuring the speed of the Internet and pay more attention to the accuracy of their other services.

Result for Pr-Cy.Ru - 80/20 Mbit / s, in our opinion, a dubious service for our region.

On this, we believe, there are enough comparative tests. Our goal was to show that speed testing services are nothing more than entertainment; you shouldn't take them more or less seriously. We did not specifically consider other services such as.

Currently, free online services are very popular, which can determine the speed of the Internet connection used in a few seconds, as well as find out the IP address of the computer, determine the user's location, check the site for viruses, and more. The most common programs of this type include Speedtest.

The free service is designed to quickly test the transmission speed and download data to the user's computer.

You do not need to download or install any additional components to complete the test.

To start testing, there is a special button "Forward" (Start testing).

The end result is issued 30 seconds after the program is started for execution.

Features of Speedtest Net

As a result of using SpeedTest, it becomes possible to determine the incoming and outgoing speed of the Internet connection.

In most cases, the declared value of this characteristic is deliberately overestimated by the supplier and does not correspond to reality. The provider indicates false facts in order to attract the attention of users and increase its popularity.

A complete package of tools with all the possibilities can be obtained only if you visit the website of the official developer of the service or its partner. This is very important, as an incredible amount of obscene resources have been created, masquerading as the original.

Global speed test SpeedTest

  • The Speedtest.net service includes only one page - the main page.

He is:

  • ping,
  • incoming and outgoing speed Internet connections,
  • user location, established by the IP address of the computer from which the site was logged in.

Internet speed results among site users

  1. The total number of tests is 6867.
  2. The average download speed is 30.13 Mb / s.
  3. The average download speed on a PC is 28.31 Mb / s.
  4. The average ping value is 29 ms.

Particularly demanding users can take advantage of the geolocation option of the server that will perform the check. For this, a special map is provided, the scale of which can be changed using the slider located on its left side. Otherwise, this operation is performed automatically.

Parameter testing is done in real time and looks truly impressive. It provides a visual display of everything that is happening - data transfer between the specified server and the user's computer, taking into account all the established indicators.

The data handler window presents a colorful animation of uploading or transferring data from the user's device to the selected city, a graph and an image of a speedometer marked with Speed. This approach is designed to brighten the waiting time for the issuance of the result and save a person from unnecessary negative emotions about this.

The whole process of determining the real speed of the Internet connection through Speedtest is performed with one click of the mouse.

It is very convenient and does not take much time. Even a beginner can cope with such a task.

Ookla

Ookla is the world leader in broadband speed testing and the development of software for network diagnostics.

SpeedTest.net has been designed to be the most accurate way to identify the fastest ISP and mobile network... Speed tests are aggregated by averaging the test results of each device at a given user location, every day.

This improves the accuracy of the data and reduces bias from retests or tests that try to skew the results. Many other methods are also used to prevent fraudulent or inaccurate results.

Over 5 million users use the Speedtest app every day, keeping the company at the forefront of internet speed testing. This free service is available to anyone around the world who is interested in knowing the features and characteristics of their Internet connection.
