    Required materials

A bunk bed, decorated in the same style as other furniture elements, perfectly complements the interior.

To make your own crib for children, which will have two floors, you need the following tools:

    1. Pliers.
    2. Hammer.
    3. Screwdriver.
    4. Electric drill or screwdriver.
    5. Construction level.
    6. Roulette.
    7. Square.
    8. Hacksaw.
    9. Clamps.
    10. Electric jigsaw.

In order for the bed to fit perfectly into the interior of the children's room, you will need to think in advance about where it is best to place it. You will need to take into account the size of the beds so that you can understand how much material will need to be purchased. For work you will need the following materials:

    1. Wooden beams 2.5 m long – 4 pcs.
    2. Wooden beams 3 m long – 4 pcs.
    3. Three-meter boards – 4 pcs.
    4. 2 plywood sheets, chipboard or slats 12 mm thick.
    5. Screws 75 mm long.
    6. Screws with a diameter of 6 mm, which have a hexagonal head - 8 pcs.
    7. Bolts with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 75 mm – 10 pcs.
    8. Nuts and washers.
    9. Putty, which is intended for working with wood.
    10. Self-tapping screws.
    11. Bolts 150 mm long – 2 pcs.
    12. Polyurethane.
    13. Sanding paper.

Wood can be replaced with laminated chipboard. If you still plan to use boards, then before performing all the work they will need to be kept in the room for approximately 1 week, so that the temperature and humidity are approximately the same as in the room where the structure will be made. This will need to be done to ensure that the material does not warp.

Assembling the crib with your own hands must be done carefully, because the structure will be an important component of the children's room.

    Work order

A bunk bed, decorated in a classic style, harmonizes well with the interior.

The manufacturing process is as follows:

    1. First of all, you will need to determine on the supporting structure of the bed the location of the fixation points of the wooden boxes that are intended for mattresses.
    2. It is necessary to make a hole on both sides of the longitudinal bars for each of the screws.
    3. Next, the lower longitudinal beam is pressed against the first wall, after which it is fastened with a screw. The same must be done with the second wall.
    4. In the same way, the upper longitudinal bars, which are intended for mattresses, are installed. At this stage it will be produced supporting structure children's bed
    5. Needs to be secured cross beams under a child's bed. This should be done with both the lower and upper tier. They must be firmly fixed with screws to the beams at a distance of 30 cm from each other.
    6. Next, the frame of the box is covered with boards in the side part. For sheathing, it is recommended to use screws with invisible heads.
    7. Next, side guards are attached that can prevent accidental falls of children who will be sleeping.
    8. The ladder to the upper tier is rigidly secured with screws.

    Nuances to consider

Scheme of a bunk bed with a built-in table and shelves.

You definitely need to be sure what size the sleeping area should be and which side is best to install the vertical ladder. The size of the children's bed should be larger than the sleeping area in length by approximately 8 cm and width by 10 cm. A ladder will increase the size of the bed by approximately 4.5 cm.

In order to determine the appropriate height of the bed, it is necessary to take into account the height of the ceiling in the room. The distance between the lower and upper floors should also be taken into account. You will need to leave enough space so that the mother can sit down with the child if necessary.

For the stairs and racks you need beams and boards made of solid wood. The panels at the ends are the same for the entire structure; this point will simplify their preparation. The side panels are the same width as the end panels. If you connect them differently to each other, you can make an original design.

Based on the size of the mattresses that will need to be placed on the bed, then it is necessary to increase the dimensions of the structure by 2 cm on each side. This is necessary so that you can easily tuck in your bed linen. The most important guideline in this work is the comfort of the crib that is being manufactured.

The lower position of the first tier can be determined if we take as a basis the calculations the height that the child can easily overcome. In most cases, the height is 35 cm for a child under 3 years of age. The frame for placing the mattress should be lower by its thickness. For the second tier, the upper position must be set so that an adult child who sleeps upstairs can sit down on the first floor at any time without touching his head to the upper floor.

How to make a strong frame?

    Bunk bed drawing

A children's bunk bed should be reliable, while the aesthetic side is secondary. The bars must be firmly connected using screws. The result will be 2 frames that have almost same sizes. Aesthetically, they can complement each other well.

You will need to secure the board to one of the sides and the end with screws; the importance of this fastener should be taken into account. It is recommended to screw screws with inside, you will need to take care that they do not go right through the board. Not for self-tapping screws long length Large holes can be drilled. To do this, it is recommended to use a depth stop on an electric drill.

The side is also installed on another frame. It is recommended to hide the holes for fasteners using putty. After it has dried, the putty should be treated with sanding paper. The length of the leg must correspond to the height of the fence. Make sure that the leg can withstand the load that will be placed on it.

You will need to make a hole in the leg where the upper tier is attached. The same hole is made in the frame with a side. You will need to make recesses in the leg that will help you easily hide the hex head of the screw and the washer. The hole must be made of such a depth that the screw, having passed through the side and the leg, can be securely fastened in the block.

A children's bunk bed has one advantage: under the first tier you can place a small box in which you can store a bed or a small number of necessary things. For example, a child will be able to place his toys in such a box. Front panel The drawer should not be made as long as the crib. The height should correspond to the panel of the first floor, which can complement the design of the room for children.

    Bed installation technology

The lower tier of the bed can be equipped for a child’s play by equipping the structure with additional elements.

The base of a bunk crib should be made of wood. High-quality preparation of this material requires some effort: you will need to level it with a plane, sand it with sandpaper, and finally you will need to varnish the product to be able to extend its service life.

If the walls are made of plasterboard, then determining the location of the racks is quite simple. It is very important to make holes in the required places. For this purpose, it is recommended to find an assistant who can support the frame at the bottom, pressing it firmly against the wall.

Guide holes will need to be made by drilling the profile of the racks, the plasterboard sheet and the frame block. It is necessary to prepare places for screwing in screws that have hex heads. For such an operation, a long drill bit should be used. The screws will need to be screwed in so that they connect all the elements and are secured in the racks. In the same way, you need to install the first tier, that is, a frame with a side.

Special attention It is necessary to pay attention to installing a fence, because it can create some safety guarantees for children. The fence can be made of strong boards that are secured to posts placed in a vertical position. IN in this case The screws are screwed in from the inside. It is worth keeping in mind that there should be a hole in the fence for the stairs that lead to the upper tier.

The vertical staircase is quite simple to make; it will take up less space, when compared with a staircase, which is located at an angle. First of all, two beams are fixed that can guide the movement of children during the ascent or descent. The steps must be securely fixed with bolts that are 6 mm long. Long bolts are used to secure the top step and simultaneously secure the ladder to the bed.

Bunk bed for children made of laminated chipboard

The upper tier can be mounted on the wall. The lower bed can be equipped with wheels.

If laminated chipboard is used to produce a bunk bed for children, then there will be no need to level, sand and varnish the material. Instead, you just need to sand and glue the edge around the edges of the chipboard. Thanks to the use of such chipboard, you can make a beautiful bed with your own hands in a short period of time. You should know that laminated chipboard has good strength and wear resistance.

Laminated chipboard must be cut outdoors. This material has its own specifics, and therefore it will be necessary to make some changes to the design production technology. A bunk bed for children made of laminated chipboard will have much more weight compared to wooden structure, making the bed more stable.

Bunk beds can be placed adjacent to each other. This saves a lot of space in the room.

In case using chipboard You should purchase the following tools:

    1. Portable manual circular cooker.
    2. The iron you will need to apply the safety edge.
    3. Screwdriver.
    4. Bits and drills for a screwdriver.
    5. Protective gloves or mittens.
    6. Ruler.
    7. A simple pencil.
    8. Roulette.

To be able to make a bunk bed with your own hands good quality, from materials it is necessary to use not only chipboard, but also edges, glue, and sanding paper. You will also need to purchase the wood that is used for the stairs leading to the second floor.

    Stages of making a bed:

    1. Creating a project.
    2. Gluing the edge to the chipboard.
    3. Cutting the material.
    4. Connecting all elements to each other using self-tapping screws.

A do-it-yourself two-tier can solve many problems in a cramped room. Any bed “eats up” a significant area in the bedroom, and if there are several children in the family, then a compact multi-bed bed is simply necessary.

Of course, furniture can be purchased by choosing suitable option from a wide range, but it will be expensive. Yes and pick it up optimal sizes not so simple. With some carpentry skills, you can make a bed yourself, and with the right approach to work, it will fit perfectly into the interior of a children's room.

Wood is rightly considered an ideal material for making furniture, and especially children's beds. It is natural, environmentally friendly and absolutely harmless to the child’s body. At the same time, the wood is easy to process and has sufficient strength, providing an attractive appearance.

In principle, you can use almost any wood, but you should still take into account certain specific properties:

The choice of wood species depends entirely on the decision home handyman, and is produced taking into account the style of interior design.

Advice: most often used conifers, since they attract attention with an affordable price, as well as the presence of antiseptic ability due to the content of natural phytoncides.

    Drawing

Work on creating a two-tier structure begins with the selection or independent development of bed drawings. There are such popular models:

The traditional design is most widespread. Simple, standard design is made up of the following elements:

    1. Bed(2 pieces) from solid wood or chipboard with a thickness of at least 18 mm.
    2. Frame for installing the bed. It is made of boards and timber. If necessary, cross members are installed to strengthen the bed.
    3. Legs(4 pcs.) made of wooden beams.
    4. Sides. On the back side they can be made in the form of backs, and on the side - in the form of decorative sidewalls.
    5. Ladder for climbing to the upper tier.

Any person can assemble a standard bed. For its manufacture and assembly, it will be necessary to develop separate drawings of all parts (detailing) and an assembly drawing. Particular attention is paid to connecting elements.

Reference: standard sizes sleeping place for a child - 120x60 cm.

    Tools

To make a bed with your own hands, you should take care of this in advance. instrument:

Reference: for measurements and quality control you will need a tape measure, metal ruler, caliper, square, plumb line, building level.

How to make a bed for children?

The manufacture of various elements and the assembly of a simple, traditional bed is carried out in the following order:

A mandatory element of a bunk bed is a ladder. Most often it is performed vertically on the front side of the bed. It can also be mounted on the side, and in this case an inclined installation is possible. The design of the staircase is simple. Between two vertical bars 4-6 steps are fixed. It is recommended to attach the lower step additionally to the frame of the lower tier. The steps can be connected to the racks using metal corners or by inserting them into a groove. External mounting can also be used.

Important: the steps must be strong and withstand (with a margin) the weight of an adult.

    Finishing

The tree has an attractive appearance, but it appears only after finishing.

After completing the assembly of the bed, first of all, it is necessary to putty all gaps, joints and cracks. Wood putty is used for this. Next, wooden parts polished to form a perfectly smooth surface.

The decorative quality of wood is well emphasized by varnish. Depending on the interior design of the room, clear or tinted varnish can be used. If it is necessary to obtain dark tones, the wood is treated with stain or special impregnating materials before varnishing.

Using varnish you can achieve a matte or glossy surface. Modern varnishes can provide various color shades, as well as imitate the colors of valuable wood species. When making a children's bed, it is better to use acrylic or nitrocellulose varnish.

Finishing can also be done by painting. Polyurethane enamels are popular. With their help you can get a coating of rich blue, green, pink, white, beige color. It should be noted that when staining, the natural wood structure is lost.

    Conclusion

A bunk bed is indispensable for a children's room that accommodates at least two children. Wood makes it possible to make such a structure safe and attractive. You can assemble the bed yourself, taking into account the recommendations of experts and being careful. Homemade furniture can be optimally fitted into the dimensions of a small room and harmoniously coordinated with the interior design style.

The question of how to make a bunk bed with your own hands often appears on the “agenda” due to the fact that standard apartments do not have impressive areas and spaciousness. Even if the children in the family are completely allocated separate room, don't clutter it extra furniture– it is better to leave more free space for games and sports activities.

Therefore, for a family in which two or more children are growing up, a bunk bed design becomes a real find. And it’s not at all necessary to rummage through online catalogs or run around furniture stores- it’s quite possible to make one on your own.

Some types and models of bunk beds

Nowadays, in the assortment of stores you can find many models of beds with two tiers, and on their basis it is quite possible to create your own version of a sleeping place with suitable specific conditions and the specifics of the location, size and comfortable staircase. In addition to traditional bunk structures, you can also make a loft bed, which will free up useful space in the room.

If we consider several various options, it will be easier to choose the most suitable design for your apartment.

    Traditional model

This type of bunk bed is traditional and has the simplest design possible. It is quite accessible to self-made and will require a minimum amount of materials.

This model is perfect for a children's room and will significantly save usable space in it, which can be used for arranging a workplace or play area. In addition, the structure can serve as a good platform for intricate children's games, so it should be quite stable, and in some cases it is recommended to firmly fix it to the wall.

The big advantage of this model is the natural wood from which it is made, which is very important for a child’s room. Drawings and detailed description The manufacture of this bed model will be discussed below.

    Bed option with sofa

A bed with on its first tier folding sofa, will save even more free space in the room than a conventional two-tier design. If the ground floor is arranged regular bed, it will be uncomfortable to just sit and watch TV, since there is no comfortable backrest. Therefore, in addition to the traditional version of a bunk bed presented above, in a children’s room you will still have to look for a place for a sofa or two armchairs, which, of course, will take up a fairly large area. Well, if a sofa is built into a two-tier complex, it will serve as a sleeping place at night, and during the daytime it will create a comfortable corner for relaxing while sitting or lying down. In addition, when folded, this piece of furniture will not take up a single extra centimeter of space, and when unfolded, it will become a spacious, full-fledged bed.

    Transformable bed

To make such a complex yourself, you will have to buy or use an existing one and attach the rest of the structure to it, which, by the way, will be stable and reliable due to the massiveness of the lower tier.

    Bed model with drawers

This version of a bunk bed, designed for three beds and additionally equipped drawers and shelves, will take up slightly more space than a regular traditional bed with two tiers. However, in a children’s room you still can’t do without various cabinets and boxes for toys and educational supplies, for which it can be used attached structure, simultaneously fulfilling the role of reliable, stable, leading to the second tier.

And in this version there are even three sleeping places and a lot of useful built-in lockers

The sleeping places themselves will take up an area that would accommodate one regular bed. As you can see in the illustration, the third berth is a retractable structure, which is hidden under the mattress of the first tier during the day.

Thus, three children will be provided not only with sleeping places, but also with their own drawers and shelves, and in addition - an excellent play complex into which such a two-tier structure can turn.

Model with a double bed on the first tier

A bed with a double bed on the first tier can be used in one-room apartment, or in a two-room apartment, where it was decided to allocate one of the living spaces as a living room with a workplace. So, the first floor of the bed is reserved for adult bedroom, and the second is intended for a child.

This version of the trapezoidal design will take up the area of the room, which is usually reserved for an unfolded sofa. To make it, you will need few materials, but due to the widely spaced legs and the large massiveness of the lower tier, the bed will be stable and durable.

    Bed for a large family

A bunk structure consisting of four beds is an excellent choice for a family with four or more children. This option is more difficult to make, and it will require quite a lot of material, but the room will become spacious, and the bed will look neat along one of the walls.

The design can be modified and even increased to six sleeping places if it is installed the length of the room and another two-tier section is added, or two pull-out mattresses are installed under the lower tier.

    Loft bed

The loft bed is also used for rational use usable area in the room and a kind of “disguise” of the sleeping place. This option will do not only for small children - it is often chosen for adults, especially if the apartment consists of one room.

This design allows one area of the room to be used for dual purposes - on the second tier there is a wide and comfortable bed, and the lower platform of the first tier is a fairly spacious office, which provides everything for comfortable work.

An important condition for arranging such a structure is its strength, especially if the sleeping place is intended for two people. Typically, such a loft bed is additionally securely fixed to the wall.

    Children's loft bed

The children's version of the loft bed is a whole complex that includes a table and a wardrobe in which not only toys, but also items of clothing can be stored. With some justification, such a complex can even be called a small room, which will become a favorite place for a child, since most children always try to create their own “secret” corner, building huts and houses from chairs and blankets.

By making this version of a bed with all the elements necessary for play and study, you can solve several problems at once and save on buying pieces of furniture for a child for many years, since the complex is suitable for both a five-year-old child and a fifteen-year-old teenager. Moreover, when starting to draw up a drawing, it is quite possible to include already existing cabinets and tables in it, which are perfect for the first tier of the structure.

Upon completion of the work, all elements of the loft bed are united in a common color that will be in harmony with the design of the entire children's room.

    Making beds with two tiers

Further in the publication we will consider the manufacture and assembly of two different models bunk beds - “classic” type and loft beds. However, many structural elements and their assembly principles are exactly the same, and in order not to repeat ourselves, first of all these nuances will be shown separately, using the example of an ordinary wooden bed. If these principles are mastered, then creating a second tier will no longer be difficult, of course, taking into account certain features.

Principles of high-quality assembly of a wooden bed

In order for the product to turn out neat, it is necessary to perfectly accurately manufacture and process all the details. The instruction table below shows illustrations in which the master uses professional tools– they make the work much faster and easier. However, the same operations can easily be carried out ordinary tool, which is present in almost every good, “hands-on” owner. Of course, you will have to put in a little more effort, and manufacturing will take longer, but it is still possible.

    Illustration
So, all boards must be planed, their surfaces must be perfectly leveled and adjusted to the required size.
This illustration shows the manufacture of the drawer - the side panel of the supporting structure of the bed.
To ensure that the transverse boards on which the mattress will be laid have reliable and strong supports, well-processed bars are attached to the drawers.
Carpenter's glue is applied to the drawer panel along the gluing line of the timber.
Then the glued element is placed on it.
The timber is pressed well and tightened with clamps in several places.
After the glue has dried, the parts are fastened with self-tapping screws through countersunk holes.
Very important point is the manufacture of side stands-legs, since they bear a high load.
In the future, the side and end panels of the bed will be attached to these elements.
Therefore, they are usually assembled from two layers, one of which is the main one, and consists of a whole timber.
The second layer is assembled from individual elements located at a certain distance from each other.
This distance depends on the width of the drawer, the edge of which will be installed in the resulting groove.
Separate pieces of timber are first glued along the markings onto a solid part, and then countersunk holes are drilled into them for self-tapping screws.
Another point that causes difficulties is the creation of patterned forms on some parts, for example, when making semicircular backs of the headboard and footboard.
To avoid mistakes and to avoid drawing unnecessary rough lines on the wooden part itself, it is recommended to make a paper template from which the shape is transferred to the board with neat dashed outlines.
Then, a flexible plastic strip is taken, which can be bent along the bend of the cut, and the finishing curved boundary of the cut is drawn along it.
Next, the board is cut along the marked line using an electric jigsaw.
This photo shows a professional stationary machine, but it is quite possible to use a hand tool.
After this, the cut line is processed with a manual or stationary router, which will round the edges and rid them of protruding wooden fibers.
In the same way, all the boards necessary to create the elements for the headboard and footboard are cut and processed.
When all the parts necessary for assembling the bed have been made, you should try them on and make the necessary markings.
Next, connecting dowels are manufactured or purchased ready-made.
They can be round or flat, as shown in this illustration.
The finished dowels are laid out on the parts to be connected.
At the same time, it will be possible to visually estimate how many of them will be needed.
In the places where holes will be drilled for installing dowels, with a simple pencil marks are made.
It is easier to drill holes for round dowels by choosing a drill of the right size.
If flat dowels are used for connections, then several holes are drilled nearby with a drill, which are then combined with a chisel or cutter.
The dowels are inserted into the holes without glue for now, since it is first necessary to pre-assemble the structure to ensure that there are no distortions.
After this, the bed posts are put on the free ends of the dowels.
To completely seat the parts during assembly, a rubber or wooden hammer(mallet).
Having made the connections of the parts of one of the sides of the backrest, proceed to mounting the second rack.
Having collected individual elements beds, it is necessary to pre-assemble the entire structure of the “ground floor” to make sure that all the parts fit together exactly.
Base boards are laid on the bed frame - this process is carried out to determine optimal distance between them.
When the size of the gaps between the boards is determined, fragments of the block are cut along it and glued between the boards onto the support beam on which the base boards are laid.
These elements will allow the boards to be in a given position without shifting, so they are simply laid without securing the edges with screws.
After all the preliminary operations have been carried out and any necessary adjustments have been made, the entire structure is disassembled and reassembled, but “tightly”, that is, using glue.
The illustration clearly shows how the bed posts are connected to the headboard panels using dowels coated with glue.
The glued bed frame must be tightened with clamps until it dries completely, and then it is additionally fastened with self-tapping screws through countersunk holes.
The illustration clearly shows the pieces of timber attached to the longitudinal support shelf of the drawer - between them the base boards under the mattress will subsequently be laid.
The final connection of the drawer and the backs of the headboard and footboard is made with self-tapping screws.
This illustration shows what cut needs to be made on the bottom of the baseboard leg so that the bed can be installed flush against the wall.

So, having made all the parts that are needed according to the specific drawing of the selected model, you can proceed to self-creation this original item furniture, using the shown principles of assembling the main parts and assemblies of wood.

Below is an illustrated instruction table that shows relative position and connecting all the parts of the bunk bed. Based on the diagrams and text accompanying them, it will not be difficult to carry out independent installation.

(In some illustrations, dimensions are given in inches. Converting to millimeters is easy: 1 inch = 25.4 mm.)

IllustrationBrief description of the operation performed
This is the side supporting part of the bed - the drawer, designed to hold the transverse slats.
There are 4 such panels made, they form the length of the upper and bottom box beds.
This figure shows the principle of assembling the headboard and footboard, which consist of posts and crossbars.
In turn, the racks are made up of solid timber and separate sections that cover the holes in the joints of the parts and form a groove for mounting the frame into it.
Headboard and footboard assembly diagram with detailed details and dimensions.
Here you need to pay attention to the fact that in the upper part of the back of the headboard there is solid timber The racks are secured with three separate pads, since the fencing parts will be secured between them.
For the back of the footboard, instead of three overlays, one whole one is fixed in its upper part.
    Assembled headboard and footboard parts.
Based on the dimensions given in the figure, it will be easy to mark and assemble these bed elements.
This drawing shows the details of the stairs and the railing of the upper berth.
The staircase post indicates the location of the three steps.
When attaching the lower step to the footboard post, you need to ensure that the fastening screws of the step do not rest against the frame fastening screws.
Now, for the comfort of further work, you need to fasten the headboard and footboard with the lower and upper drawers.
To do this, they are installed in the gaps left between the linings, and each of their sides is secured with four self-tapping screws.
When the structure is firmly on the floor, you can begin installing the staircase handrail, its steps, and the railing bars.
The elements are fastened to each other, as well as to the headboard and footboard posts, with self-tapping screws.
After all the elements have been assembled into a single structure, you can lay transverse boards between the sections of bars fixed to the frames.
The last step will be to finalize the joints so that there is no burr left on them.
Then all that remains is to clean the structure from dust, install it in in the right place, put mattresses on the sleeping places - and the bed is ready for use.

I would like to add that it would be a good idea to secure the assembled structure to the wall, since children usually use it not only as a sleeping place, but also as a sports complex. To avoid unpleasant moments, it is better to ensure in advance that the structure is stable and safe.

    Loft bed

Another bed option that will help save space in small apartment, even with only one room. As already mentioned, the space occupied by such a bed can be usefully used for various needs.

The diagram below gives a complete idea of what the finished bed will look like. In addition, it is possible to determine your own dimensions of the structure, since the bed may be larger or smaller than the option shown in the drawing, depending on the height and age of the child, as well as the size of the room.

Such a design may well be modified into a more compact version a side platform is not installed, but a staircase is installed instead, which will take up much less space.

The instruction table below will show the order of work and the dimensions that must be observed during assembly.

IllustrationBrief description of the operation performed
Based on the presented drawing, the left end part of the structure is assembled from prepared boards.
The crossbars are also connected to the posts using dowels, which are placed in the drilled holes using wood glue, and then additionally fixed with self-tapping screws - their caps must be deepened into the wood by 2÷3 mm.
A platform with stairs will be attached to this side.
Next, the right end side of the structure is assembled in the same way.
It differs significantly from the previous one, since it serves as one of the sides of the fence.
The next step is to glue the bars onto the load-bearing boards of the frame (tsars), and then screw them with self-tapping screws, with delimiting board sections 30 mm long, between which the transverse slats will be laid under the mattress.
Next, the end parts of the structure are connected with drawers and enclosing boards.
All parts are assembled using bolts or dowels and screws.
If dowels are used, they must be placed on glue.
As a result, the internal area of the bed should be 1000x1900 mm in size.
After this, lamella boards are laid on the protruding beam - the basis of the berth.
The next step is to assemble the support frame-rack for the podium platform.
It must be durable, since it will bear quite a large load.
The next operation is to install the platform frame to the frame, and the entire structure is attached to the bed.
To fasten all elements of the podium, it is recommended to use metal corners, which are screwed on the inside of the frame.
Here you need to take into account that the structure must be strong enough to support the weight of an adult.
Next, the podium area is covered with prepared boards.
It is best to place them on glue, and then screw them in with self-tapping screws, recessing their caps into the wood by 3-4 mm, and seal the remaining recesses with a mixture of sawdust and glue.
All edges of the boards must be carefully processed until smooth, so that the possibility of causing one or another injury is eliminated.
The next step is making the stairs, and it can be called the most difficult of the entire process of building a bed.
The boards must not only be perfectly processed, but also their edges must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees, but at the same time the top is cut on one side, and the bottom on both sides.
To make it easier to mark the places where the bars are secured under the steps, one board can be placed on the podium in a position in which the staircase will be attached to it.
The steps should be parallel to the floor - this can be marked using a regular building level.
Having marked one of the boards, mark the second one in exactly the same way, with complete symmetry.
The marking points will set the direction for drawing lines along which uncut bars are screwed to the boards. Their edges can be trimmed after fastening - exactly at the level of the end part of the board.
Next, step boards are laid and secured onto the fixed bars.
To make it easier to work, first fix one board at the top and bottom - this will give the structure the necessary rigidity. After this it will be easy to screw on the remaining steps.
All fasteners must be recessed into the wood, and the holes must be sealed with a mixture of glue and sawdust.
The finished staircase must be securely secured to the podium and the structure can then be carefully tested.
After this, all holes, sealed with putty made from glue and sawdust, are sanded with sandpaper.
The next step is to paint or coat the entire assembled structure, if desired, with a water-based varnish.
To make it easy to apply varnish or paint on surfaces, without being strongly absorbed into the wood, it is advisable to first coat all parts with a wood primer, which will create a film, filling the pores of the material.

This publication presented the most simple designs bunk beds that can be made even by a beginner. If you don't have everyone at hand necessary tools for wood processing, or there is not enough confidence that the process of precise processing of workpieces will go flawlessly, you can entrust this work to professionals by contacting a carpentry workshop, providing the purchased material and drawings with dimensions. The master will make all the parts, and all that remains is to independently assemble the structure at the place of its installation.

And at the end of the publication, another easy-to-make version of a children's bunk bed is shown in the attached video:

Video: how to make a children's bunk bed

Is there not enough space in the children's room for separate cots? Assemble a children's wooden bunk bed with your own hands. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, and will show you the algorithm for making such a bed with your own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or teenagers can also be made from metal, but not everyone will have a neat welded structure, and the appearance of such sleeping places is not very childish. Therefore, we will consider making beds from wood and lumber, since these are inexpensive and easy-to-work materials, warm, beautiful and homely.

    Bed frame materials

The list of wood materials from which a bed can be made is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

    1. Array. Expensive material and quite difficult to prepare and manufacture if you do not have experience working with it. Experience is important here. Although products made from solid wood are the most beautiful and durable, they still don’t use a children’s bed for very long - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

    2. Lumber - edged or planed boards, timber - the most common and easy-to-work materials, provided that you are confident in proper drying, otherwise load-bearing structure can "lead".

    3. MDF - wood fiber board. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling, it generates dust without forming chips. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. You can order individual elements of the bed from a furniture shop or sawing shop: everything will be carefully cut out and the edges will be glued on.

    4. Chipboard - particle board. Formaldehyde emissions are increased without a sealed coating, excluding class E1 slabs. Easy to saw, but does not hold screws well. Suitable for unloaded parts, such as drawers mounted under the bottom of the bed. You can make backrests and decorative panels from laminated chipboard (laminated chipboard) - the film coating prevents formaldehyde from evaporating, but it is important that the ends of the plates are also covered with film.

    5. Furniture board- a slab glued together from individual blocks natural wood. Beautiful, durable, even allows you to carve, but requires skill in operation, as it has internal stresses, which need to be taken into account.

When purchasing fittings, you should give preference to steel hardware. Aluminum ones are much less durable and rigid.

    Methods for connecting wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various connections horizontally, vertically, and the formation of corners. This can be done in various ways. We present some of them for your reference.

    1 - half-tree connection; 2 - “claw” connection

    1 - complete cutting; 2—cutting is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection with rectangular keys; 2 - connection with dovetail keys; 3 - connection to the main tenon

    Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can have different designs and be decorated in a variety of ways. So, the upper tier can be located exactly above the lower one, offset, leaving space for a cabinet, or perpendicular to it. The staircase may consist of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged lids on drawers. The bed frame can also be supplemented with drawers located under the lower mattress. To do this you will need guides - runners. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or sports equipment.

Below are drawings of some beds with basic dimensions.

And now a few design ideas that can inspire you to create an original bunk bed. Please note how some models use absolutely “waste” materials - slabs, branches, trunks, driftwood.

Method for making a bunk bed

Some of the most inexpensive materials- boards and beams made of pine. It is from these that we will make a two-story bed.

    Material calculation

When making a bed, you need to keep in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, so the distance to the bottom of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of sleeping places in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you make your own mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a thick fabric cover, then the dimensions are taken based on personal preferences.

The figure below shows the individual elements of the bed, and the table shows the purpose, dimensions and number of pieces.

1 — vertical posts (legs); 2 — external linings for the racks; 3 - boards of the supporting frame; 4 - upper and lower headboard strips; 5 — central headboard bar; 6 — side guards; 7 — staircase railing; 8 - steps of the stairs

    Qty Size, mm Name
    4 38x76x1730 Vertical racks
4 38x76x1730 Blanks for external linings for vertical posts
4 38x140x2030 Bed support frame boards
4 32x44x1850 Longitudinal mattress support bars (not shown in the picture)
24 20x76x1000 Transverse mattress support slats (not shown in the picture), cut in place
    8 20x140x914 Upper and lower headboard/footboard slats
    4 20x90x914 Headboard/footboard center slats
    1 20x90x1510 Stair railing
    3 20x64x482 Stair steps
2 20x90x1800 Fence railings, cut to the required size during installation

    Assembly units

A bed is a piece of furniture consisting of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single unit. Identical parts can be cut by holding them together with a vice or clamp, so they will turn out absolutely identical. Before assembly, you need to make sure that all wooden parts are cleaned, smooth and free of burrs. It is better to work with a special wood sander or grinder.

    1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-like elements. The difference is that the fence rails are built into the footboard as shown in the pictures below.

    Headboard and footboard

Detailed layout with dimensions of headboard and footboard

Installation order: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the stand and backrest slats are drilled simultaneously; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all other parts of the headboard

    2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, you will need four prepared boards - the longitudinal components of the frame. To ensure the reliability of the structure, the longitudinal strip must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the thickness of the board. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal support strip of the mattress, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

Design and dimensions of the supporting frame board

    3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is simply a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a cut for mounting on the frame. Places for fastening the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the frame screws.

    1 — cutouts 38 mm; 2 — places of fastening of steps; 3 — stair steps, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

    4. Frame assembly

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the boards of the supporting frame using screws. After this, the transverse slats and mattress holders are laid, and the outermost ones are filed in the corners for tight installation. There is no need to secure them. The second tier is assembled in the same way.

    5. Assembling stairs and railings

The stairs and railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made on the side of the wall - for the lower and upper beds. Then you will need four more planks.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!
