Velux roof windows. How to install a roof window correctly Velux roof windows installation instructions

  • The comfort of an attic largely depends on the amount of natural light entering the room. Effectively solve this problem using dormer windows almost impossible. The real revolution in this area was the attic, designed by Willum K. Rasmussen, founder of the Velux company.

    Velux roof windows have a history of seventy years. During this long time, the first samples underwent many changes. This applies not only to design - innovative technologies have greatly simplified their use, increased efficiency, functionality and reliability of the design.

    On domestic market Velux roof windows have been introduced since the early nineties. The list of cities where you can buy them has long crossed the 70 mark.

    Velux offers the following products as accessories for its products:

    • materials for waterproofing and insulation;
    • slopes;
    • flashing used during installation;
    • roller shutters and awnings that protect the attic space from heat

    They also come with instructions for installing attic roofs. Velux windows, which describes the process in detail.

    What attracts Velux products

    • It is noteworthy that in the production of high-quality solid wood, especially durable, dense pine - northern. For frames and boxes, glued laminated timber impregnated with an antiseptic is used. Finished goods additionally protected by monolithic polyurethane or special varnish applied to the surface of the frames.
    • Installation is allowed on roofs with a slope greater than 15⁰. They are installed deeper than analogues from other manufacturers, almost flush with roofing covering. Thus, the junction nodes are much warmer, since in in this case it is much easier to insulate a window frame.
    • Main feature all windows in a unique ventilation device with which they are equipped. For example, the designs of the GGL or GGU models combine an opening handle and a special window valve designed for ventilation. All of them have a removable filter - excellent protection from the penetration of insects or dust.
    • For glazing, the Danish company uses energy-saving double-glazed windows made using innovative technology, called the “warm perimeter”. In such designs, the aluminum dividing strip is replaced with thin-walled steel. Such a replacement leads to the absence of condensation along the perimeter of the glass unit, which, in turn, increases performance characteristics windows
    • Velux double-glazed windows are filled with argon, and silicone is used for sealing instead of butyl sealant.
    • They have a three-level seal along the contour, which eliminates drafts and increases heat-saving qualities. They were tested at temperatures of about minus 55⁰ and, according to the test results, were found to be frost-resistant. That is why they are recommended for use even in the coldest regions of Russia.
    • Modern design, ergonomic shapes, as well as reliability, environmental friendliness and high quality, confirmed by relevant certificates.

    Model range for the attic

    The range of Velux windows is very diverse: four modifications with a central axis, two with an upper axis, balcony designs and others.

    Let's highlight the most common ones:

    • “Economy” (GZL) is a basic model with a central opening axis. The profile is covered with two layers of varnish. Equipped with a washing filter, ventilation is carried out through top part;
    • “Classic” (GGL) – a wooden product, opening along the central axis, treated with three layers of varnish. For ventilation, a window valve is used, equipped with a washing filter, and allows installation of electrical equipment
    • “Smart” (GGL or GGU Integra) - equipped with an electric drive to adjust the position, there is a remote control, as well as a rain sensor. Allows installation of curtains and roller shutters.

    • “Moisture resistant” (GGU) – product white, the surface of the wood is covered with monolithic polyurethane. There is a window valve and a washing filter. Allows installation of electrical equipment.
    • GPL – has two opening options: central axis and top 45⁰.
    • Window-balcony (GDL) – has interesting constructive solution: when the upper sash is lifted, something similar to a roof is formed; a fence is created by slightly opening the lower sash. “Coming out” onto such a balcony, although a person continues to remain indoors, he is practically in the fresh air.

    Dimensions

    Dimensions skylights velux vary within:

    • length – 77.8 –160 cm;
    • width – 55 – 114 cm

    They have special indexing: letters (C – S) are used for width, numbers (02–10) for length. For example, the designation C02 corresponds to frame dimensions of 55.0 x 77.8 cm, and S08 – 114.0 x 139.8 cm.

    When choosing the sizes of these products, they are guided by the pitch of the rafters, as well as the need for illumination, taking into account the fact that the areas of glazing and the illuminated surface are related approximately one to ten.

    How to install

    • First of all, it is necessary to calculate the window design: number of windows, sizes, location. Please note that the sizes are standard, so you need to choose best option, which will provide the same good review both in a sitting and standing position.
    • is possible only provided that the dimensions of the openings exceed the dimensions of the windows - by 3.0–4.0 cm in width and 4.5–5.0 cm in height, and the gap formed by the rafters and the frame should not be more than 3 cm with any side.
    • Next important point When planning, the roof slope is taken into account. The lower it is, the higher the structure should be.
    • Window sashes with a handle at the top are placed at a distance of 0.8 m from the floor, other models - at a distance of more than 1.10 m.

    Installation

    • Installation is carried out by fixing the window to the sheathing or rafters using special clamps. Particular attention should be paid to the location of the bottom edge. It should not hinder the cladding. The interior finishing is laid vertically, and the exterior - horizontally.

    Note

    Mounting to the rafters is certainly stronger, however, many choose the second option. The fact is that when installed on the sheathing, the frame can be clearly aligned, and this greatly simplifies the installation work.

    • Gaps between frame and roofing elements filled with putty. It must have a bitumen base.
    • It is more convenient to carry out the installation if you mount a temporary beam, which will serve as a support under the window. In this case, it is necessary to use a level to accurately ensure horizontality: first it, and then the bottom of the frame. The lower corners are secured with screws, after which they proceed to fastening the upper ones. They are fixed with screws in the middle of the oblong hole. This leaves a small amount of play so that the frame can be adjusted.
    • The frame must fit tightly to the box, otherwise the structure will begin to leak. This, as well as ensuring optimal functionality, requires adjustment of the system. To begin with, adjust the lower part of the box and the lower sheathing to each other, set according to the level. In this case, it is necessary to achieve uniform gaps on the sides. Next, it is necessary to ensure that the lower parts of the box and the rotating frame are parallel. The adjusted structure is re-leveled and the corners are finally secured according to the instructions.

    Insulation and waterproofing

    Windows are installed in conjunction with the device high-quality insulation and waterproofing.

    Velux products are equipped with a special BDX-2000 package containing:

    • seal made of foamed polyethylene. Insulation is laid around the entire perimeter, which eliminates “cold bridges”;
    • moisture-proof apron used to edge the structure and connect it to the waterproofing roofing pie.

    The list of components also includes a drainage gutter. Through it, condensate is discharged, which can fall above the frame from the side of the warm attic.

Do-it-yourself installation of Velux roof windows

The installation of the tiles was completed three weeks ago. Unfortunately, I was a little confused ]]> with the windows. It turned out that the windows I ordered are no longer produced. Velux has started production of a new series of windows. The supplier told me that the new windows would be lighter by reducing the frame size and increasing the glass size. For this pleasure I had to pay an additional 90 euros for all three windows. The skylights were delivered last week, but my roofer has been sewing them up lately due to large quantity orders, so the windows had to stand for a week. The roof windows will be located in non-residential rooms, so I decided to order the cheapest roof windows. I ordered three roof windows with top opening along the central axis (two windows 134 x 140 cm, one window 94 x 140 cm). The choice fell on plastic skylights.

]]>

I did not order Velux branded material for heat and vapor barrier under the slopes of the roof windows. The roofer brought his vapor barrier film for roof windows. In addition, it was already included in the price of installing roof windows.
]]> ]]>

Installation of the skylights took almost the whole day. In the afternoon in our bathroom eldest daughter the rays of the setting sun penetrated. Now we are thinking about what curtains to choose for the roof windows. Velux offers dimming and roller blinds. In any boiler room you will need to buy a blackout curtain so that the heating boiler does not heat up. But on landing and in the bathroom you can install roller blinds to softly diffuse daylight.
]]> ]]>

I chose aluminum frames for the skylights. We covered the roof cement-sand tiles Nelskamp S-Pfanne Longlife is in anthracite color, so the frames for the roof windows were also ordered in a dark color.

Installation instructions for Velux roof windows

]]> ]]>

The lower edge of the window must be positioned in relation to the transverse beams (if any) and the sheathing batten in such a way as to make the internal cladding under the window vertical, and the external cladding horizontally.
]]> ]]>

The window opening in the roof should be 50mm larger than the window frame in height and 30-40mm in width (approximately). The recommended distance between the roofing ]]> material and the window frame should be strictly observed. The distance between the rafters and the window frame should not exceed 30mm on each side. To make installation more convenient, you can install a temporary support beam under the window. Using a level, level the lower part of the window horizontally, then secure both lower corners with screws. Then each upper corner is secured with a screw in the middle of the oblong hole. You should not tighten the screw all the way; you should leave room for adjustment.
]]>

To prevent drafts and moisture from entering the room, you must strictly follow the instructions. It is necessary to adjust the gap between the box and the frame. It should be the same along the entire length of the sides. These actions must be performed immediately, since it will be impossible to make adjustments later.

]]> ]]>

Perform the second adjustment.

It is necessary that the frame covers its entire width evenly. To do this, the gap between the window frame and the lower parts of the frame must be the same. To level the gap, place the included plastic wedge on the side where the gap was selected first, under the upper corner.
]]> ]]>

The insulating roofing material (glassine) should completely go around the perimeter of the window frame, reaching its top edge. When fixed to the corners of the window frame, the insulating roofing material should be slightly raised at the cut points. To ensure sufficient wind insulation and waterproofing, the sheets of insulating material adjacent to the window must overlap each other by 200 mm or more. If the roof structure does not provide waterproofing, then its installation around the window is mandatory.

]]> ]]>

]]> ]]>

]]> ]]>

In the cardboard packaging of the frame you will find a description of its installation and everything necessary details. You should not use the description in the package; it is much better to install the flashing by following these instructions.

Above are instructions for installing a roof window. Maintain the distance between the roofing material and the window frame. If the roof structure includes sheathing, it is necessary to install a drainage gutter.

7. Install the lower part of the flashing (1), then the lower window trim (2). Secure them using the supplied screws, screwing them into the pre-prepared holes. Secure the lower side sections of the flashing (3) to the frame using nails.

]]> ]]>

8. Insert the side sections of the flashing (2) until they stop into the lower section of the flashing. Bend the notched part (1) for greater stability. Attach the side sections to the window frame with nails, and to the sheathing (3) using clamps. To ensure correct location roofing material sometimes it is necessary to slightly press the edge of the side sections of the flashing (4).

]]> ]]>

9. Using the supplied screws, secure the side (1) and top (2) pads in the prepared holes. The roofing material must be brought close to the fold on the flashing (3). To fix the roofing material when laying it on the flashing, it is allowed to use only manufactured bitumen based materials. The use of silicone-based materials is not permitted.
]]> ]]>

10. Install the upper section of the flashing, secure it with clamps on the sheathing and screws on the window frame.

If necessary, the roofing material above the window can be cut at a distance of 60-100mm from the top edge of the window frame.

If you removed the frame, reinstall it. There is a locking button on the rotating hinge of the frame, which automatically snaps into its original position when closing the window.

Attention!

Each window or frame purchased comes with detailed instructions for its installation. Here are general (schematic) instructions.

Task: Install 4 paired vertically and horizontally. Insulate the complex, create a thermal insulation contour around the frames. Instead of using the standard proprietary Velux solution, use your own insulation technology developed by the technical specialists of KROY.RU LLC.

Work order for the installation of a complex of four paired ones. Leaving the proprietary insulation technology BDX 2000 in favor of an alternative inexpensive insulation technology using our own development and penoizol material 8)

Preparing the opening. An opening was cut and prepared in the thickness of the insulated roof, the distance between the rafters was 800mm. Rafter board 200mm. Steam and waterproofing were also cut out. The vapor barrier was not completely cut off, but wrapped around the edges. In the future, it will be useful for insulating devices.

Attaching the Main Mounting Brackets to the Velux window frame. The brackets are fastened with self-tapping screws, focusing on the red line, which conventionally indicates the upper edge of the sheathing.

Penoizol was cut into strips. Double-sided special connecting tape was glued along the window frame.

At this stage, the frame cannot be secured separately from the others, you can only attach it. Thorough fastening occurs after the entire complex of 4 Veluxes is installed and leveled.

In order to install the entire set of windows evenly, the manufacturer provides mounting sockets on the brackets.

You can also use a cord 8)

In the cavity between the window and penoizol they additionally laid basalt insulation. We sealed everything and carefully stitched it with a stapler.

The insulation is ready, now our window will not freeze in the winter!

One of the final stages of installing a roof window is installing a drainage flashing. Installation of side and middle paired parts

It's evening and work is coming to an end.

Finally, all the frames are installed and double-glazed windows are inserted into them. All that remains is to fold the penofol and put a vapor barrier on top, which must be glued with tape or double-sided connecting tape.

In a private house, the attic is another room. To turn attic space In a full-fledged residential building, it is necessary to install windows. It is better to do this immediately at the stage of roof construction.

Installation of a finished roof window soft roof more difficult: for installation you will have to cut large plot covering, backing plywood, roofing pie and even rafters, if they are installed at small intervals.

The technology for installing a roof window in a soft roof depends primarily on the design of the windows themselves. Manufacturers have different installation requirements. For example, Velux models can only be attached to rafter legs, and FAKRO and ROTO are often attached to the sheathing.

Let's consider general rules installation

Scheme and choice of model for installing a roof window in a soft roof

When choosing a model and determining required quantity windows are based on the calculation of 1 square meter of translucent structure per ten square meters of attic area. It is recommended to draw up a window placement plan in advance.

  • for steep roofs, the window is installed so that its lower cut is located at a height of one to 1.4 meters;

  • if the slope is within twenty degrees, you can place the window higher - the illumination will be better;

  • The minimum installation height is 80 centimeters, the maximum is ninety meters.

The height is also affected by the design of the block itself. More precisely, the location of the handle:

  • if the handle is on top, the window is placed no more than 1.1 m from the floor;
  • if in the middle - 1.2-1.4 meters;
  • When the handle is in the lower position, if there are children in the house, you cannot place the window low. Not less than 1.3 meters.

The window is installed between the rafter legs. The width of the model is selected so that there is about two centimeters between the frame and the rafters on both sides. Insulation will be located around the perimeter of the frame; the width of the gaps between the frame and the rafters depends on its thickness.

Installation procedure

1. If the roof is already ready, you need to cut an opening in it for the window frame. The opening is made along the cut of the rafters: between the edge and the frame the same gap is left as between the frame and the rafters. This is how all materials are cut with the exception of the waterproofing layer: you need to leave an extra 20-25 centimeters of film for overlap.

2. If the ceiling is lined with plasterboard or clapboard from the inside, it will be difficult to determine the location of the opening. It is recommended to have a rafter layout diagram on hand, otherwise you will have to dismantle some of the panels. Before cutting out the entire opening in the drywall along the contour, you should make several through holes to relieve stress.

3. Transverse bars are nailed to the rafters at the top and bottom of the opening. Their installation is required if installing a window requires removing a section of rafters. If not, it is still recommended to nail the bars: this will hold the window stronger.

4. A drainage tube/gutter is placed on top of the finished opening at a slight slope to remove condensate and secured to the sheathing. The length of the gutter is equal to the width of the opening. The slope is necessary so that the water does not stagnate, but spontaneously flows into the ventilation gap of the roof.

5. Remove the sash from the window. If the window is blind, remove the glass unit.

6. Attach the box to the rafters and cross beams with angle brackets. One shelf is screwed with self-tapping screws to wooden element, second – to window frame. The lower edge is fastened tightly; the screws on the upper edge are not fully tightened.

7. Adjust the structure according to the level. Serious distortions are corrected plastic corners. It is recommended to return the sash to ensure proper fit. After adjustment, the sash is removed again and the fasteners are tightened.

8. Place waterproofing and insulation around the window. The edges of the waterproofing apron are placed, on one side, under the waterproofing layer of the roof itself, and on the other, under the condensate gutter. The edges of the roof waterproofing are fixed to the frame. Fastening with galvanized nails.

9. Close assembly seams flashing strips from the window kit. Place the bottom part first, then the rest. All strips must be placed under an elastic seal.

10. From the inside, the cracks along the perimeter of the frame are sealed with heat-insulating or sealing material, a vapor barrier is laid and the slopes are treated. The lower slope should be horizontal, the upper slope should be vertical.

11. Return the sash to its place.

You can slightly change the installation sequence: first sheathe the opening thermal insulation material, and then install the frame. The insulation strips are attached to the rafters and beams with a stapler.

Installing roof windows on a soft roof is an energy-intensive task and requires high precision.

Poor installation of an inclined window on the roof will result in the attic being constantly flooded with rain, and condensation, rain and snow moisture will begin to accumulate under the roofing. All this will accelerate the wear and tear of the roof and the entire house.
